Thankfully there were no crying children this episode, but it still requires 850Mb Hard Drive Space. Part II is developed by HumanHead games, makers of Rune, and they have stolen a march on the original by having part of the original movie describing the legend of Coffin Rock as their opening cutscene. This is an immediate improvement on the original. The Nocturne engine returns with its default-subtitled Widescreen cutscenes. They are better executed in Rune, but then that game didn't have any kind of template to adhere to. You play Lazurus, a man who starts off with a head wound and shaky memory. Following the little girl as instructed leads to the revelation of your mission, and then you get off into the woods proper to set about your search. The default controls are more intuitive and the flick screen action avoids hitting you with crazy camera angles at the start, and overall feels more controllable than Rustin Parr--when the view changes the assumption of reversed keys is correct on most occasions. The atmosphere setting continues in the forest with high-quality sound effects permeating the background as you run, search and occasionally shoot your way through to completing your task. Resident Evil fans who enjoyed Rustin Parr should have no problems getting into this one. And that's really the most important thing a racing game can have. Unlike so many racing games that throw a hundred options at players and then offer lame, slow-motion action, ATV more or less says hurry up. The fact that the vehicles of choice are ATVs is almost unimportant, except that, like a cat, they can catch huge air and always seem to land on all fours. And though these machines go fast, there's really little reason to slow down. In fact, players won't even have to break on the first three tracks, as power leans and a slight easing of the accelerator can satisfy most turning demands. Of course, all this speed does have its costs, especially as far as graphics go. It's not that the tracks are ugly by any means; they hold together with little polygon breakage. It's just that they're entirely generic. You've got your desert track, your snow track, your forest track, and subtle variations of the aforementioned three. Also, there's very little a player can do besides race--in other words, no tricks. Whereas CGI effects have done nothing but make horror movies less and less scary, ironically video games, particularly the Silent Hill series, have been showing filmmakers just how it should be done for years. Irritatingly though the original PS one title remains the best of the series with the last two PS2 titles being little more than hi-res rehashes. The Room manages to shake things up a bit though, ditching the radio and flashlight gimmicks and adding twice the normal amount of side characters and a more involved fighting system. There's also a number of completely invincible bad guys and a new Resident Evil style limited slot inventory system. The room in question, as you're no doubt wondering, is in fact the toilet. Playing yet another everyman character you wake up from a rather disturbing dream to find out that you're locked inside your flat and the only way out is through a gateway to hell next to the privy. Which almost sounds like a BlackAdder joke, but is unlikely to have you laughing after your first trip. Within your flat the game uses a first person view, with the series' more traditional third person viewpoint taking over when you go through the portal. What makes things a lot more interesting is that you actually manage a team of four characters at a time, taking control of one at a time and having the other three follow along behind. The defaults include Shrek, Fiona and Donkey, but you also get to use Gingerbread Man, Lil' Red, Puss in Boots and The Big Bad Wolf. The best bit is that if you can get three friends to help, then one person can actually control a character each, which really livens things up. But even in single player mode any of the characters can get a chance to take part in a "Hero Time" mini-game that provides a enjoyable respite from the main game as you take a ride on a dragon with Donkey or indulge in a singalong with Fiona. Although the graphics are impressive (much more so than the sound, which doesnt feature the original movie cast), the main gameplay can get a bit monotonous. But for Shrek fans and general young 'uns theres more to enjoy here than with most film licenses. -- David Jenkins
