General Jannie Geldenhuys is widely regarded as one of the leading military commanders South Africa has ever produced. As Chief of the South African Defence Force from 1985 to 1990 he brought his experience to bear on the South African Border War, and was part of the negotiating team which brought an end to the conflict in 1989. In this completely revised and updated edition, Geldenhuys reflects on a life defined as much by a military career spanning more than four decades as it was by politics and indeed the need for peace on the African sub-continent. At the Front covers the years before and during the protracted Border War. But rather than a blow-by-blow official history, it consists of Geldenhuys personal experiences and insights. These include facts unknown to civilians and even to some high-ranking military officials. In particular, Geldenhuys sheds light on the final years of the conflict and the negotiated settlement. Geldenhuys also writes of his early years, as he evolved from a rugby-mad young subaltern officer to a deep-thinking, reflective man with ever-sharpening insights into, war, peace, politics and, most of all, himself. Softcover, 394 pages. Published 2008  ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  General Johannes ('Jannie') Geldenhuys SSAS SD SOE SM GCIH ORB, is a former South African military commander who served as Chief of the South African Defence Force between 1985 and 1990. Born in Kroonstad on 5 February 1935, he obtained a BMil from the University of Pretoria before joining 1 Special Service Battalion. Later he went on to higher command in 1977, serving as commander of South West Africa Command, a post he held until 1980, when he served in the position of General Officer Commanding the South West African Territorial Force. After this he became Chief of the Army, before being promoted to the position of Chief of the South African Defence Force on the 31st of October 1985. In this role, he took part in negotiations that brought the Border War to an end in 1989, after 23 years of fighting.

When Johan Booysen hears that the new Provincial Police Chief takes backhanders from a Durban businessman, he decides to give her the benefit of the doubt. But the evidence becomes impossible to ignore and he soon gets dragged down the corridors of power and politics into a web of intrigue, deceit and betrayal that, at times, he has trouble making sense of. Only when he is arrested, handcuffed and tossed into a cell does Booysen realise just how ruthless those opposed to him are an opposition he comes to call the cabal and whom he believes have more blood on their hands than the so-called Cato Manor Death Squad with which he is closely associated. Blood on their Hands traces Johan Booysens life and career from patrolling the streets of Amanzimtoti in the 1970s to his rise in 2010 to major general and head of KZNs Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit, the Hawks. But his tenure is short-lived. When Booysen decides to take on those so determined to be rid of him, each legal battle he wins is met by hostility and further efforts to shut him out of the of the criminal justice system. But capitulating is not in his DNA Softcover, 209 pages. Published September 2016.

1994 first edition hardcover with dust jacket in very good condition.  A thick book of 709 pages.  R55 postage in SA or R60 courier to most bigger cities. Sir Edward Dunlop, or 'Weary' as many knew him, became a hero to thousands of prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand 'Death Railway' during World War II. When the War broke out he took charge of a surgical team at St. Mary's, Paddington in the Emergency Medical Service, then joined the Australian Army and served in Palestine, Egypt, Greece, Crete and North Africa. In 1942 he sailed with his medical unit to Java and elected to be captured with the Allied General Hospital he began there. During more than three years as a prisoner of war, his gift for organizing vast hospital camps in Java and on the railway in Thailand, his courage, compassion and determination to get men home alive, made him a legend in his lifetime. Had his frank diaries of captivity been found by the Japanese, he would have been beheaded. Returning to Australia in 1945, Weary dedicated his life to caring for former Allied prisoners of war. Sadly he died before this biography, written with his full cooperation, could be published.
