This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days With an Introduction and Notes by Michael Irwin, Professor of English Literature, University of Kent at Canterbury This selection of Carroll's works includes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, both containing the famous illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. No greater books for children have ever been written. The simple language, dreamlike atmosphere, and fantastical characters are as appealing to young readers today as ever they were. Meanwhile, however, these apparently simple stories have become recognised as adult masterpieces, and extraordinary experiments, years ahead of their time, in Modernism and Surrealism. Through wordplay, parody and logical and philosophical puzzles, Carroll engenders a variety of sub-texts, teasing, ominous or melancholy. For all the surface playfulness there is meaning everywhere. The author reveals himself in glimpses. Features Summary Includes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. Through wordplay, parody and logical and philosophical puzzles, Carroll engenders a variety of sub-texts... An 365-day anthology of readings from one of the most influential writers of all time, George MacDonald, compiled by CS Lewis himself. MacDonald was a major Christian writer of the late nineteenth, early twentieth centuries. He influenced nearly everyone who was a major twentieth century writer (including Lewis Carroll, WH Auden, JRR Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, and CS Lewis. Not only was he a pioneer in the fantasy fiction genre, laying the path for people like Tolkien to write Lord of the Rings, but also a major Christian thinker, which influenced Lewis profoundly. Lewis, in fact, wrote that MacDonald was his 'master', and said 'I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself.' These words will challenge and uplift you, and illuminate the faith which underpins all of CS Lewis's popular and enduring writing. Format:Paperback Pages:0

by Lewis Carroll London: William Heinemann, 1907, first edition thus New York: Doubleday Page & Co. This edition being the first to contain illustrations by Arthur Rackham Condition: Although the contents are in reasonably good condition, with scattered foxing/spotting throughout, please note that the original spine is missing and has been replaced with paper tape. I also noted on closer examination that the final of thirteen colour illustrations is missing (opposite p. 158). The other twelve illustrations are in very good condition with the protective captioned blank pages protecting them. As a result of these flaws I am open to offers. Thanks, Steve.
