It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days "This edited volume will make a major contribution to our appreciation of the importance of classical literature and learning in medieval Ireland, and particularly to our understanding of its role in shaping the content, structure and transmission of medieval Irish narrative." Dr Kevin Murray, Department of Early and Medieval Irish, University College Cork. From the tenth century onwards, Irish scholars adapted Latin epics and legendary histories into the Irish language, including the Imtheachta Aeniasa, the earliest known adaptation of Virgil's Aeneid into any European vernacular; Togail Troi, a grand epic reworking of the decidedly prosaic history of the fall of Troy attributed to Dares Phrygius; and, at the other extreme, the remarkable Merugud Uilixis meic Leirtis, a fable-like retelling of Ulysses's homecoming boiled down to a few hundred lines of lapidary prose. Both the Latin originals and their Irish adaptations had a profound impact on the ways in which Irish authors wrote narratives about their own legendary past, notably the great saga Tain Bo Cuailnge (The Cattle-Raid of Cooley). The essays in this book explore the ways in which these Latin texts and techniques were used. The chapters of this book are unified by a conviction that classical learning and literature were central to the culture of medieval Irish storytelling, but precisely how this relationship played out is a matter of ongoing debate. As a result, they engage in dialogue with each other, using methods drawn from a wide range of disciplines (philology, classical studies, comparative literature, translation studies, and folkloristics). Ralph O'Connor is Professor in the Literature and Culture of Britain, Ireland and Iceland at the University of Aberdeen. Contributors: Erich Poppe, Helen Fulton, Robert Crampton, Barbara Hillers, Michael Clarke, Maire Ni Mhaonaigh, Ralph O'Connor, Abigail Burnyeat Features Summary Examinations of the use of classical Latin texts, themes and techniques in medieval Irish narrative. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days Medieval Europe was a meeting place for the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic civilizations, and the fertile intellectual exchange of these cultures can be seen in the mathematical developments of the time. This sourcebook presents original Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic sources of medieval mathematics, and shows their cross-cultural influences. Most of the Hebrew and Arabic sources appear here in translation for the first time. Readers will discover key mathematical revelations, foundational texts, and sophisticated writings by Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic-speaking mathematicians, including Abner of Burgos's elegant arguments proving results on the conchoid--a curve previously unknown in medieval Europe; Levi ben Gershon's use of mathematical induction in combinatorial proofs; Al-Mu'taman Ibn H?d's extensive survey of mathematics, which included proofs of Heron's Theorem and Ceva's Theorem; and Muhy? al-D?n al-Maghrib?'s interesting proof of Euclid's parallel postulate. The book includes a general introduction, section introductions, footnotes, and references. The Sourcebook in the Mathematics of Medieval Europe and North Africa will be indispensable to anyone seeking out the important historical sources of premodern mathematics. Among the best novels I know about the fate of American innocence abroad' Garth Greenwell So. We were Americans abroad. We weren't the doomed travellers in a Paul Bowles novel, and we weren't the idealists or the malarial, religion-damaged burnouts in something by Greene; but we were people far from home nevertheless. Our naivety didn't have political consequences. We had G.P.S. in our smartphones. I don't think we were alcoholics. Our passports were in the same drawer as our collection of international adapters, none of which seemed to fit in Brazilian wall sockets. My husband was in the chrysalis stage of becoming a rich man, and idealism was never my vice. I was ancillary - a word that comes from the Latin for `having the status of a female slave'. That's the sort of thing I know, and it tells you something about how I misspent my education. The term among expats for people like me was `trailing spouse'... `Brutal, dazzling' Daisy Johnson, Guardian `Captivating' Irish Times `Devastating, funny and wise' Garth Greenwell `A triumph' Samantha Harvey `A writer so gifted with language that you forget who you are in the poetry of his prose' Uzodinma Iweala `Magnificent, profound, and true' Elisa Albert `Reminded me in parts of Maggie Nelson. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days A wonderful story of what family means, of the flesh-level pain of sibling rivalry, and the discovery of love. It is a fantastic and beautiful tapestry of some of the most imaginative and precise prose writing going on in America today. Toby Olson stands tall among the handful of writers I most admire and respect.--Richard Wiley "Write A Letter to Billy" is a delectably complicated maze that kept me spellbound from start to finish. Only the most sophisticated of writers could manage to combine the seriousness of a quest for identity and meaning with the intensity of a thriller, not to mention an excursion into deep-sea diving and the resort life of southern California. Once again, Toby Olson has written a terrific novel full of peril and surprise, offering startling revelations and sudden expansions of the heart and mind."--Lynne Sharon Schwartz United with a long-lost teenage daughter, a retired Navy underwater repair specialist investigates a mysterious list his father had written just before his death. Some of the items are crossed off, but one of the unfinished tasks haunts him: "Write letter to Billy." What had his father planned to tell him? What he learns changes his life forever. Influenced by D.H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens, Toby Olson's pointed examination of memory and consciousness illustrates how the unraveling of external mystery leads to self discovery. Toby Olson, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction, has published eight books of fiction and twenty-two books of poetry. His work has appeared in over two hundred newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. Olson's novels include "At Sea," "Dorit in Lesbos, Utah, " and "The Woman Who Escaped from Shame." He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and North Truro, Massachusetts. Features Summary In this literary adventure tale, Bill teaches deep sea diving to his daughter and discovers deep secrets about his own past.
