It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days One difficulty in writing a balanced history of the American Revolution arises in part from its success as a creator of our nation and our nationalistic sentiment. Unlike the Civil War, unlike the French Revolution, the American Revolution produced no lingering social trauma in the United States-it is a historic event widely applauded by Americans today as both necessary and desirable. But one consequence of this happy unanimity is that the chief losers of the War of Independence-the American Loyalists-have fared badly at the hands of historians. This explains, in part, why the account of the Revolution recorded by self-professed Loyalist and Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, Peter Oliver, has heretofore been so routinely overlooked. Oliver's manuscript, entitled "The Origins & Progress of the American Rebellion," written in 1781, challenges the motives of the founding fathers, and depicts the revolution as passion, plotting, and violence. His descriptions of the leaders of the patriot party, of their program and motives, are unforgiving, bitter, and inevitably partisan. But it records the impressions of one who had experienced these events, knew most of the combatants intimately, and saw the collapse of the society he had lived in. His history is a very important contemporary account of the origins of the revolution in Massachusetts, and is now presented here in it entirety for the first time. Features Summary One difficulty in writing a balanced history of the American Revolution arises in part from its success as a creator of our nation and our nationalistic sentiment... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days The continued explosion of data and the continued evolution of analytics capabilities will usher in the next analytics revolution beyond the Intelligent Enterprise. This book paints a provocative picture of the evolution of analytics capabilities toward an ideal state that the author calls "The Sentient Enterprise." The Sentient Enterprise can listen to data to sense micro-trends, conduct analysis and make autonomous decisions with little or no human intervention at massive scale in real-time. It can act as one organism without being impeded by information silos. It is always evolving, with emergent intelligence that becomes progressively more sophisticated. This book describes the evolutionary journey of analytics capabilities that begins with today's Agile Data Warehouse and culminates in the Sentient Enterprise. A framework is provided to assess ab organization's progress along this journey and "next practices" that business leaders can harness to unlock the full potential of Big Data and analytics. Features Summary Mohan and Oliver have been very fortunate to have intimate views into the data challenges that face the largest organizations and institutions across every possible industry-and what they have been hearing about for some time is how the business needs to use data and analytics to their advantage. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Coined by National Trust co-founder Octavia Hill at the end of the nineteenth century, the phrase 'Green Belt' originally formed part of an impassioned plea to protect the countryside. By the late 1950s, those idealistic Victorian notions had developed into something more complex and divisive. Green Belts became part of the landscape and psyche of post-war Britain, but would lead to conflicts at every level of society - between conservationists and developers, town and country, politicians and people, nimbys and the forces of progress.Growing up on 'the last road in London' on an estate at the edge of the woods, John Grindrod had a childhood that mirrored these tensions. His family, too, seemed caught between two worlds: a wheelchair-bound mother who glowed in the dark; a father who was traumatised by chicken and was eventually done in by an episode of Only Fools and Horses; two brothers - one sporty, one agoraphobic - and an unremarkable boy on the edge of it all discovering something magical. The first book to tell the story of Britain's Green Belts, Outskirts is at once a fascinating social history, a stirring evocation of the natural world, and a poignant tale of growing up in a place, and within a family, like no other. Features Summary A captivating nature memoir telling the story of Britain's Green Belt, our national obsession with the countryside, and the author's childhood. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days For thousands of years prior to Henry Hudson's voyage, the Hudson River was a vital commercial and strategic route for the indigenous peoples who settled near its banks. The river's importance continued for centuries afterward, linking the great trading center of Manhattan with remote places upstate and beyond. In Revolutionary times, the successful struggle for the Hudson was key to American victory over the power of the British military. The Hudson River railroad succeeded earlier modes of transportation in the Hudson Valley--the river sloop, the Albany Post Road, the steamboat, and the Erie Canal. The Hudson Line was both an early product of America's industrial age and a catalyst for the intense and complex developments of that age. The advent of photography coincided with the inauguration of the Hudson River railroad, and American photographers were on-hand to witness and record the progress of commerce and community in the villages, towns, and cities along the Hudson River Line.
