Originally published in 1960 in German as "Der Gelbe Stern", this landmark book was one of the first comprehensive photographic accounts of the Holocaust. During the 1950s, researchers in Washington, D.C. and London pored over more than 1,500 tons of photographs and documents seized after World War II. In 1960 Gerhard Schoenberner gathered some 200 photographs from the newly uncovered material, most of them taken by Nazis to chronicle their war against the Jews. Schoenberner named the book after the yellow badge that the Nazis forced the persecuted Jews to wear. With its comprehensive, authoritative presentation of visual and textual evidence, much of which had not yet not been seen before, The Yellow Star shocked the German population and introduced the world to many haunting images. The book endures as one of the most important documentary accounts of the Holocaust, reprinted in many German editions and published in eight languages. The photographs are accompanied by extracts from Nazi and German documents-laws, decrees, and other Reich memoranda, field reports from SS officers and concentration camp directors, newspaper editorials, and other writings. Schoenberner also provides detailed captions to the photographs. Organized chronologically, the book follows the growing scope and terror of the Holocaust, from the first anti-Jewish laws and Kristallnacht to ghetto uprisings and the Final Solution, culminating in the liberation of the death death camps. Each chapter has a narrative introduction by the author. While remaining true to the author's original concept, this new edition is a completely fresh presentation of the photographs and documents, with several enhancements. Schoenberner has added new photographs, replaced others, updated the captions and commentary when necessary, and updated and expanded the bibliography. Even if anti-Semitism were not on the rise in today's world, The Yellow Star would still be an essential book. In photograph after photograph, page after page, the Shoah unfolds as inexorable horror-captured with resonance that remains unequaled. First English edition published 1969 by Corgi. The book has been incorrectly bound (pic) but the cover and spine are good. Including a softcover copy of Michael Elkin's "Forged in Fury." Tracked postage is R50.00.

Binding: Softcover Pages: 273 Dimensions: 24 x 16 x 2.5 cm +++ by Kati Marton +++ In this insightful, moving and deftly researched book, Kati Moarton writes about nine Hungarian Jews who fled to America in the years before World War II. Hardcover in very good condition. Dust jacket has slight wear to edges. R46 postage in SA.  Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller was a German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor. He is best known for his statement, " First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist...... and there was no one left to speak for me. He was a national conservative and initially a supporter of Adolf Hitler, but he became one of the founders of the Confessional Church, which opposed the nazification of German Protestant churches. He vehemently opposed the Nazis' Aryan Paragraph, but made remarks about Jews that some scholars have called antisemitic. For his opposition to the Nazis' state control of the churches, Niemöller was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1937 to 1945. He narrowly escaped execution and survived imprisonment. After his imprisonment, he expressed his deep regret about not having done enough to help the victims of the Nazis. He turned away from his earlier nationalistic beliefs and was one of the initiators of the Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt. From the 1950s on, he was a vocal pacifist and anti-war activist, and vice-chair of War Resisters' International from 1966 to 1972. He met with Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War and was a committed campaigner for nuclear disarmament.

Medieval Silver 'Long Cross' Penny - Edward I (1239-1307) Ref. 26JA       Edward 1st, also known as Edward Longshanks due to his height and The Hammer of the Scots, ruled England from 1272 to 1307. Born in 1239, he was the first son of Henry III. He had a sickly childhood but lived for close on 70 years.  His last encounter was against Robert the Bruce of Scotland but he died before reaching Scotland. Respected by his subjects as a soldier, an administrator and in the manner in which he ruled England, he was also brutal in many ways, having expelled the Jews and felt no remorse in his cruelty against the Scots. He proclaimed himself a 'man of faith' but fell out with the clergy. Nevertheless he established parliament as a permanent institution and created a functional system of taxes. He conquered the Welsh and almost conquered the Scots.         The coin shown above was found by metal detecting in Britain. It is silver and measures roughly 18mm in diameter and weighs 1.26 grams. In good condition, but showing some slight damage to the edge and slight loss of wording on the obverse side.  Please note that the coin shows the 'tri-foil' fleurs on the side of the crown, a good method of identification that this is NOT a Edward II or Edward III coin. This is a 'Hammered" coin - Hammered coins were produced by placing a thin sheet of metal, either gold, silver, bronze or copper, between two dies, and striking the top die as to create an  image on each side. The 'Long Cross' design was introduced by Edward I.  Silver coins, in the Medieval age, were often 'clipped', having thin slivers of silver removed from the coin. These slivers were eventually melted down and sold. The 'Long Cross' was an attempt to stop this practice, in that, if the coin did not show the complete 'cross' it would not be accepted. Unfortunately, this did not work, and coins were still subjected to 'clipping'.       Please note - I am NOT a numismatist, but, from my research, I believe this coin is dated  and identified correctly. My apologies, if I am wrong.       cost R400.00 shipping R25.00   Terms: We offer a strict three-day approval period from the date the parcel reaches you. On the battlefields of World War II, the men of the African-American 761st Tank Battalion under General Patton broke through enemy lines with the same courage with which they broke down the racist limitations set upon them by others -- proving themselves as tough, reliable, and determined to fight as any tank unit in combat. Beginning in November 1944, they engaged the enemy for 183 straight days, spearheading many of Patton's offensives at the Battle of the Bulge and in six European countries. No other unit fought for so long and so hard without respite. The 761st defeated more than 6,000 enemy soldiers, captured thirty towns, liberated Jews from concentration camps -- and made history as the first African-American armored unit to enter the war. This is the true story of the Black Panthers, who proudly lived up to their motto (Come Out Fighting) and paved the way for African-Americans in the U.S. military -- while battling against the skepticism and racism of the very people they fought for.
