"Since 'Today's The Day!' is 'A Chronicle of the Curious', it's not surprising that the tales are a little strange - often even incredible.  But nevertheless, with the possible exception of some hearsay evidence and the occasional apochryphal anecdote clearly indicated in the text, everything in this book of anniversaries is true.  Or at least, as true as can be ascertained from the many hundreds of sources called upon during the seven years it's been in research.   While it's packed with information, most of the material is not of the kind you'll find in conventional text books.  But that too is hardly surprising. Because it's to the odd, the entertaining and the unashamedly bizarre that Today's The Day is dedicated."   Beadlebum, 24 May 1979. Soft cover, good condition.  760 pages.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days Jeremy Hall's childhood in the white-ruled apartheid South Africa of the 1950s and '60s was ostensibly idyllic: growing up in the farming areas of Natal, he had free rein to pander to his keen exploratory mind, yet niggling away was entrenched racism and interracial hatred. Closeted in the hallowed halls of an English-speaking high school, the revelation of the real world that followed - a world of township unrest, Afrikaner politicians issuing dire warnings of the red and black hordes massing on the borders - exploded into Hall's psyche with his national-service call-up into the South African Defence Force (SADF), where he encountered the institutionalized hatred of the Afrikaner hierarchy for the English-speaking recruits, the rowe, or 'scabs'. Disillusioned and unsettled, following his SADF conscription, Hall found himself in 1976 signing on for three years with 2 Commando The Rhodesian Light Infantry as the bush war in that country erupted from a simmering, lowkey insurgency into full-blown war. As a paratrooper with this crack airborne unit, he was to see continual combat on Fireforce operations and cross-border raids into Zambia and Mozambique, such as Operation Dingo, the 1977 Rhodesian attack on ZANLA's Chimoio base. It is extremely difficult to identify lunar features at the eyepiece of one of these instruments using a conventional atlas. The human brain finds it difficult to compare the real thing with a map that is a mirror-image of it. This new SCT version of Hatfield's famous lunar atlas solves the problem. Photographs and key maps in The Hatfield SCT Lunar Atlas are mirror-images, to show the Moon exactly as it appears through the eyepiece of an SCT or Maksutov telescope.

Kaiser Wilhelm II, His General, His Settlers,  His Soldiers. An excellent study of one of Africa's often overlooked atrocity, researched and written by Jeremy Sarkin.  I n 1904, the indigenous Herero people of German South West Africa (now Namibia) rebelled against their German occupiers. In the following four years, the German army retaliated, killing between 60,000 and 100,000 Herero people, one of the worst atrocities ever. The history of the Herero genocide remains a key issue for many around the world partly because the German policy not to pay reparations for the Namibian genocide contrasts with its long-standing Holocaust reparations policy. The Herero case bears not only on transitional justice issues throughout Africa, but also on legal issues elsewhere in the world where reparations for colonial injustices have been called for. This book explores the events within the context of German South West Africa (GSWA) as the only German colony where settlement was actually attempted. The study contends that the genocide was not the work of one rogue general or the practices of the military, but that it was inexorably propelled by Germany's national goals at the time. The book argues that the Herero genocide was linked to Germany's late entry into the colonial race, which led it frenetically and ruthlessly to acquire multiple colonies all over the world within a very short period, using any means available. First edition softcover published by UCT Press, 2011. 276 pages with index. Illustrated. Good condition. Tracked postage is R55.00.

Jeremy Clarkson finds the world a perplexing place. So much so, in fact, that he wrote a book about it. But despite the appearance of the best selling "The World According To Clarkson", things don’t seem to have changed much. And so Jeremy’s having another go. In "And Another Thing", our exasperated hero discovers that: he inadvertently dropped a bomb on North Carolina; we’re all going to explode at the age of 62; Russians look bad in Speedo's. But not as bad as Brits; no one should have to worry about being Bill Oddie’s long lost sister; cooking a Sunday Roast is one thing. Gravy is quite another; and, he should probably be nicer about David Beckham. But while these things play on his mind, the world remains Jeremy’s favourite place to be. On the whole, it’s brilliant. It’s just the idiots, meddlers and do-gooders who spoil it for the rest of us. Laugh-out-loud funny and as straight-talking as ever, Clarkson bursts their pointless little bubble, while celebrating the special things that we should hold dear. Sit back and enjoy as Jeremy puts the world to rights.. Slight surface scratching on cover and light creasing on spine. Folding mark on bottom right hand corner.  Light yellowish spots on first and last pages.  Some browning on thickness of pages due to storage.  Rest of book in good, readable condition.
