Japanese Black Pine can reach the height of 40 m, but rarely achieves this size outside its natural range. The needles are in fascicles of two with a white sheath at the base, 7-12 cm long; female cones are 4-7 cm in length, scaled, with small points on the tips of the scales, taking two years to mature. Male cones are 1-2 cm long borne in clumps of 12-20 on the tips of the spring growth. Bark is grey on young trees and small branches, changing to black and plated on larger branches and the trunk; becoming quite thick on older trunks. Because of its resistance to pollution and salt, it is a popular horticultural tree. In Japan it is widely used as a garden tree both trained as Niwaki and untrained growing as an overstory tree. The trunks and branches are trained from a young age to be elegant and interesting to view. It is one of the classic bonsai subjects.   Japanese cedar is a tall, cone shaped evergreen with bluish green foliage and a massive trunk with thick reddish brown bark that shreds and peels in long strips. This is a fast growing tree that, in its native habitat, can get more than 180 feet tall with a trunk diameter exceeding 12 feet. Ornamental specimens are rarely more than 60 feet tall. The branches are arranged in horizontal tiers, ascending at first, then drooping near their ends. The flattened, wedge-shaped leaves are about 1/2 inch long and point forward, while their bases clasp the twigs. The leaves are overlapping and crowded in 5 ranks that spiral around and completely cloak the twigs. Male and female cones, 1 inch or less in length, are on the same tree. Two varieties are recognized: var. japonica has a dense habit and thick, spreading branches; var. sinensis has a looser habit and slender, drooping branches. A fantastic bonsai specimen. Previous customers: Please note the genuine Japanese pumice (Hyuga) now being imported is slightly different in appearance and is of a superior quality compared to conventional pumice (previous stock). Please read the updated product description below. Please note that 3 different sizes of this product is stocked;   Fine (1-3mm),   Small (3-6mm)   and   Medium (5-8mm). What is it? Japanese pumice, or Hyuga as it is known in Japan is a naturally occurring volcanic product from the south part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. Hyuga vs Pumice These two products are very similar in characteristics however due to the manner in which this Hyuga is formed in nature it is slightly softer and more porous than conventional pumice. In fact Hyuga is so porous it will sink, which reduces erosion when watering.  Due to the porosity of Hyuga aggregates in your growing mixes it enhances: water retention nutrients oxygen It is suitable for a wide range of plant species as it has an essentially neutral pH of 6. How to use? Japanese pumice is recommended for Rhododendron (including Azalea), general pot plants, orchids and it of course forms a crucial part of many bonsai growing mixes. If I had only one soil component to use for bonsai it would be 100% pumice. If you have akadama, add some. - Michael Hagedorn As Hyuga will not under normal circumstances break down it can be sifted and re-used however if you intend doing so a disinfecting treatment using Sporekill is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of spreading fungal or bacterial issues. Hyuga can be combined with other elements such as akadama or peat (no more than 20% of the total mix). Due to the good drainage qualities of hyuga it is very often used to assist a sick tree to regain vigor and health. In such a case 100% Japanese pumice may be used. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Michael Hagedorn 80% pumice and 20% composted pine bark for strong roots and early tree development. Pumice provides the widest range of healthy growing conditions. You can over water it, under-water it, and it creates great fine root growth second only to pumice mixed with about 50% akadama.  Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Bjorn Bjorholm Akadama, lava rock, and pumice. Use a 1:1:1 ratio respectively for conifers and a 2:1:1 ratio respectively for deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species. Peter Tea 2 parts akadama, 1 part hyuga (Japanese pumice) and 1 part coarse river sand.

This prized Bonsai specimen, is a species of cherry, native to Japan, Korea and China. It is a small deciduous tree with a short single trunk and dense crown reaching a height of about 15 to 25 feet tall. The smooth bark is chestnut-brown, with prominent horizontal lenticels. The leaves are arranged alternately, simple, ovate to lanceolate, 5 inches long with a short petiole and a serrate or doubly serrate margin. The fruit is a globose black pea-sized drupe appearing in late summer. The Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree, which only blooms for a very short time in the spring, is sometimes called Sakura ("tree on which god sits") and symbolizes spring, life and beauty. The Japanese consider these trees very special. The cherry blossom came to Japanese when a Japanese goddess named Konohanasakuyahime planted one atop Mt. Fuji. Features Particle size = 1 ~ 5mm Growing medium of Japanese bonsai masters High quality Ibaraki brand akadama Hard type (retains shape longest) Exclusively imported from Japan by Bonsai Tree. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 14L bags. Description Akadama is a granular volcanic clay-like (although it is not clay) mineral which occurs naturally in Japan. It has been extensively used by Japanese gardeners and bonsai artists for many centuries as a growing medium for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. It is mined from the surface of the ground, after which it is graded and packaged. Unlike   LECA   it is not fired at high temperatures however when it is mined from greater depths it tends to be harder or it might be slightly baked. It has many unique qualities, one of which is that when it is wet it has a darker colour so indicates when watering is needed. Akadama is unique as a growing medium and is sought after due to its ability for water retention and nutrients due to its high CEC value. However at the same time it provides porosity and free drainage. Uses This small (1~5mm) particle size akadama is suited to most tree sizes. Akadama can be combined with other elements such as crushed stone, composted bark, peat, or for best effect use pumice. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Boon Manakitivipart 1 part   pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Only available to South African customers. About I usually release some of my Japanese Red Pine stock at the beginning of summer (seedings) and older plants at the end of the growing season, during winter. These plants have been grown by myself, from seed purchased from reputable sources in Kinashi, Japan thus they are guaranteed to be the species as claimed. My process All 1 year and older stock has been grown from seedling cuttings for the best possible nebari. This also results in a very short stem length till the first actively growing buds making them idea for mame and shohin sized trees which can be grown in a much shorter space of time than the medium and larger size bonsai. Read more about my process here. While plants are in my care they are fed copious amounts of BonsaiBoost, fed weekly alternating with Seagro, Sea Secret and Kelpak to stimulate strong roots. Monthly fungicide treatments are applied, alternating between Copper Oxychloride, Chronos and Unizeb. Packaging Seedlings less than 1 years of age are sold loose, without growing medium in a plastic bag with damp sphagnum moss. Though native to Japan, Larix Kaempferi is also widely planted in other parts of the world as a forestry tree due to its strength and vigour. Its growth as a juvenile tree is even faster than the European Larch though its ultimate height is no greater. Unlike the drooping branches of the European Larch, the branches of Larix kaempferi spread more or less horizontally. The main way to differentiate between the two species is the colour of the new twigs in winter; Larix kaempferi has a reddish colour whilst Larix decidua is yellow. The Japanese Larches make a great bonsai! For your consideration is this beautiful Vintage Porcelain Japanese Hand Painted  Dragonware Moriage Tea Service. The set is very impressive having a 3-D effect with raised areas and gold gilded rims and dragons wrapped around them.  It sports a red, white, brown and green dragon in flight with a cloudy blue background and fireballs all around. Dragonware is the term used to describe porcelain or pottery items with a raised decoration which depicts an oriental dragon. These items were produced in Japan from the end of the 1890’s until the mid 1950’s. Most Dragonware pieces are decorated with moriage, which is a type of slip clay that gives the piece a three dimensional appearance.  White dragons are the major raised decorations on the moriage called dragonware.   There is some wear of the gold on the rims, and wear commensurate of age.  As can be seen from 1 of the photographs, there is damage to the lid of the tea pot.  This is not visible when place on the tea pot. The tea pot measures 21cms to the top of the lid, and 20cms  from the spout to the handle.  It weighs 427 grams. The creamer is 11,5cms to the spout and 11,5cms from spout to handle.  It weighs 117 grams. The sugar bowl measures 12cms to the top of the lid, and 14cms from handle to handle.  It weighs 194 grams. Postnet to Postnet will be R100 (plus insurance) for the three items. Thank you for looking.
