1960 hardcover with dust jacket and 256 pages in good secondhand condition. Browning to all pages edges. 6 June, 1944. 156,000 troops from 12 different countries, 11,000 aircraft, 7,000 naval vessels, 24 hours. D-Day - the beginning of the Allied invasion of Hitler's formidable 'Fortress Europe' - was the largest amphibious invasion in history. There has never been a battle like it, before or since. But beyond the statistics and over sixty years on, what is it about the events of D-Day that remain so compelling? The courage of the men who fought and died on the beaches of France? The sheer boldness of the invasion plan? Or the fact that this, Rommel's 'longest day', heralded the beginning of the end of World War II. One of the defining battles of the war, D-Day is scored into the imagination as the moment when the darkness of the Third Reich began to be swept away. This is the story of D-Day, told through the voices of over 1,000 survivors - from high-ranking Allied and German officers, to the paratroopers who landed in Normandy before dawn, the infantry who struggled ashore and the German troops who defended the coast.Cornelius Ryan captures the horror and the glory of D-Day, relating in emotive and compelling detail the years of inspired tactical planning that led up to the invasion, its epic implementation and every stroke of luck and individual act of heroism that would later define the battle. In the words of its author, The Longest Day is a story not of war, but of the courage of man.

1985. Large hard cover. 192 pages. Very good condition.  Over 1kg. Hostility between the West and the communist world is such an accepted part of modern life that it is all too easy to forget that in 1939 the Soviet Union was the world's only communist state and that the Soviet Union was then seemingly riven by purges and economic troubles and threatened abroad by the ravening power of Nazi Germany. Today the Soviet Union is master of the eastern half of Europe; China, the world's most populous country, is also communist and there are communist or single-party socialist states in central America, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The rise of communism began with the victories of the Red Army in World War II and the establishment of "people's democracies" in eastern Europe which quickly followed. The success of the Chinese communists in 1948 confirmed in many Western eyes the existence of a worldwide communist conspiracy, setting the stage for the Cold War confrontations of the fifties. The Korean War was fought to halt the expansion of this communist monolith, but there were soon signs of disharmony within the communist bloc as was seen in the growing independence of Yugoslavia and the Chinese-Soviet split. Such Dissent continues to the present day as persistent Sino-Soviet disputes and the efforts of Solidarity in Poland show. The Vietnam War, the Cuban intervention in Angola and the invasion of Afghanistan are examples of communist initiatives of the sixties and more recent times but in the same period Soviet missiles have been kept out of Cuba, a socialist government in Chile has been overthrown and Egypt has been weaned away from being a Soviet client.

The Magic Army -Lesley Thomas. In the spring and early summer of 1944 a huge force, a million and a half strong, spread across Southern England, awaiting the greatest adventure in military history. The invasion of Occupied Europe. This army, mainly Americans, British and Canadians, most of whom had no experience of battle, was to be transported across the English Channel. No one knew how. This is the story of the American "occupation" of a wide district of South Devon to permit realistic war games. Its characters range from the Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery to the village simpleton. The Magic Army is an impressively moving, often very funny novel, which recreates the astonishing operation which preceded the Allied landing in France.   Publisher: 1982 Binding: Hardcover / Dust cover, Number of pages: 445 Condition: Good,AS NEW                                                             I have more books in This Category   I have many books on sale, please check my listings.  Isaac's Army: A Story of Courage & Survival in Nazi - Occupied Poland. (2013). Brzezinski.   450 PAGES.   An account of the development of the Secret  Jewish Resistance Force within the Polish Underground after the German invasion and Blitzkrieg of September 1939.   A guerrilla formation and spy network who worked tirelessly to hamper German forces in their effort to maintain control in the occupied General Government region of Poland. All forms of sabotage were employed, including destruction of railway links and demolition of power lines in an attempt to disrupt the movement of troops and supplies to the Eastern Front. Espionage activity by underground agents  who risked life and limb to provide Allied forces with much needed information and documents required to succeed in the war effort, resulted in fewer than 100 individuals actually surviving the war after 1945.   An ideal read for those interested in Resistance movements and espionage activity against Nazi occupation forces in Europe during the Second World War.   FOREIGN BIDDERS TO PAY USING BOB BUCKS - QUOTED SHIPPING  NO COLLECTIONS  PAYMENT IN 7 DAYS OR SNC SEE SHIPPING
