About the product Signed by the author on the title page, with his gift inscription, dated Christmas 1966, to front free endpaper. 12mo; original purple boards, lettered in gilt on upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 32; illustrations by John Lawrence. Dustwrapper a little edgeworn; scattered foxing. Good condition."Butler's poetry brings into clear focus qualities he has variously shown as a man, a soldier, a teacher, and a dramatist - among them his humanity, warmth, and joie de vivre. How remarkable is its unforced naturalness: this is the hard-won product of a whole culture and a mature talent. From the impressionability of his boyhood and adolescence comes his intimate sense of place and atmosphere, and from his good nature such affectionate portraits as those of Uncle Danby and the Farmer."- From the Introduction by William Plomer

In Vanishing Cultures, Magubane documents the customs and traditional beliefs of ten indigenous peoples in his homeland of South Africa. A separate chapter is devoted to each of the peoples. Blending a thoughtful description of rituals, religion, artistry, and other aspects of social life, along with an exquisite photo essay, Magubane offers a wonderful introduction to these people. His photographs range from the dramatic action of dances to the quiet dignity of individuals posing in their traditional dress. An excellent example of the best in photo journalism. Large format hardcover with dust jacket. First edition published 1998. 168 pages.  Illustrated throughout. A stunning work in very good condition. Tracked postage is R60.00.

Profiling Serial Killers - And Other Crimes in South Africa - Micki Pistorius - 2005 - Penguin - Paperback in very good, clean and tight condition. The science of profiling is relatively new, having first been tried in the United States in the 1940s. However, it took about another twenty years of development and refinement before it became recognised as an investigative tool in the apprehension of criminals. Profiling can be described as an 'educated attempt to provide investigative agencies with specific information about the type of individual who could have committed a particular crime'. Nowadays it is utilised with other sound investigative techniques. Profiling serial killers and other crimes in South Africa contains a introduction to the subject, followed by chapters (with case studies) on serial killers, pyromaniacs, rapists, child molesters, stalkers, and white collar crime and intelligence profiling.

This is the first book dedicated to birding in South Africa's national parks. The 19 featured national parks are grouped within the four biogeographic regions — northern, arid, frontier and Cape regions. The book offers a concise introduction and summary of birding within each park. Pertinent and interesting facts about where to find birds, including the top 10 birds of each park and a description of general habitats, are presented in a readable fashion. Over one hundred photographs illustrate some of the special birds found in the parks. Of the 700 regularly seen terrestrial species in South Africa, at least 640 can be found in the 19 national parks, with 13 of the 15 species endemic to South Africa and another 19 of the 20 species endemic to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. Bird species commonly found in each park are listed at the back of the book. Birding in South Africa's National Parks will be a worthy addition to the bookshelves of bird enthusiasts, particularly birders and ecotourists visiting South Africa from across the world. This product ships within 3-5 working days.

About the product These are the first two volumes in the'African Hunting Reprint Series.'Text facsimile reprint of the two-volume John Murray 2nd edition of 1850, with a new introduction by Professor James A. Casada. Two 8vo volumes; original brown boards with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt elephant device to upper board in each case; pictorial dustwrappers; pp. xvii + xv + (i) + 388, (iv) + 381; plates, + route map in first volume. Dustwrappers slightly rubbed and edgeworn; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and reverse of dustwrappers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition.'A particularly fine example of Victorian sporting literature, the book was markedly successful and ran to many editions. Gordon-Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started from Grahamstown in October 1843 and which took him through countryside teeming with game -"not with herds, but with'one vast herd'of springboks; as far as the eye could strain."- to the Orange River and Griqualand West where he met Oswell, and, at Kuruman, Robert Moffat and, soon after, David Livingstone. He appears to have hunted every species of South African fauna and to have indulged himself in the sport to an extent almost unique even amongst the mighty hunters of Africa. The narrative is valuable for its description of the country and its inhabitants, and for its zoological and botanical notes.'
