EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! Childcraft was created as a sort of encyclopedia for young children. With simple texts and illustrations, the volumes were designed to make learning fun. Each volume addressed different subjects, including literature — such as short stories and poetry, including fairy tales and nursery rhymes — as well as mathematics and the sciences. Starting out as seven volumes in the late s, the series was re-issued in a new edition every few years, sometimes incorporating new volumes and re-arranging existing ones. It grew to 15 volumes in the s, and remained there, though further changes were made in later editions.

Paperback. English. Faber & Faber. 2004. ISBN: 9780571225804. In good condition. Jonathan Lethem again displays his brilliance in this collection of seven short stories, blurring the boundaries of sci-fi, mystery, and thriller. Tales include 'Light and the Sufferer', in which a crack addict is dogged by an invulnerable alien; 'The Hardened Criminals', wherein convicts are used as building blocks for new prisons; and 'The Happy Man', whose hapless protagonist is raised from the dead to support his family, only to suffer periodic out-of-body sojourns in Hell. Each tale features Lethem's characteristic deadpan wit and unflinchingly macabre vision of life.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days ?If we had only two or three of Patrick O?Brian?s Aubrey-Maturin series, we would count ourselves lucky; with six or seven the author would be safely among the greats of historical fiction? This is great writing by an undiminished talent. Now on to Volume Twenty, and the liberation of Chile.? WILLIAM WALDEGRAVE, Literary Review This is the twentieth book in Patrick O?Brian?s highly acclaimed, bestselling series chronicling the adventures of lucky Jack Aubrey and his best friend Stephen Maturin, part ship?s doctor, part secret agent. The novel?s stirring action follows on from that of The Hundred Days. Napoleon?s hundred days of freedom and his renewed threat to Europe have ended at Waterloo and Aubrey has finally, as the title suggests, become a blue level admiral. He and Maturin have ? at last ? set sail on their much postponed mission to Chile. Vivid with the salty tang of life at sea, O?Brian?s writing is as powerful as ever whether he writes of naval hierarchies, night-actions or the most celebrated fictional friendship since that of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Blue at the Mizzen also brings alive the sights and sounds of revolutionary South America in a story as exciting as any O?Brian has written. Features Summary Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of their beginning... "Since 'Today's The Day!' is 'A Chronicle of the Curious', it's not surprising that the tales are a little strange - often even incredible.  But nevertheless, with the possible exception of some hearsay evidence and the occasional apochryphal anecdote clearly indicated in the text, everything in this book of anniversaries is true.  Or at least, as true as can be ascertained from the many hundreds of sources called upon during the seven years it's been in research.   While it's packed with information, most of the material is not of the kind you'll find in conventional text books.  But that too is hardly surprising. Because it's to the odd, the entertaining and the unashamedly bizarre that Today's The Day is dedicated."   Beadlebum, 24 May 1979. Soft cover, good condition.  760 pages.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Part Seven Once reviled as an example of Chaucer at his most tasteless and omitted from some editions of The Canterbury Tales, this scatological anecdote has over time been accorded genuine admiration, first grudging and finally unabashed. As in The Miller's Tale, Chaucer has elaborated a simple fart joke into pungent satire against human foibles. Here too, through subtle references to religious lore, Chaucer transforms mere vulgarity into a truly clever jest and, in the opinion of some critics, a serious commentary on important issues. The particular target of the tale's satire is a friar who is so blinded by greed, hypocrisy, and anger that he cannot see how others perceive him. Features Summary John F. Plummer III (English, Vanderbilt U.) offers a comprehensive history of editions and criticism of a tale once dismissed as an elaborated fart joke and now considered a subtle and powerful satire...
