This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days With hundreds of worked examples, exercises and illustrations, this detailed exposition of the theory of Vassiliev knot invariants opens the field to students with little or no knowledge in this area. It also serves as a guide to more advanced material. The book begins with a basic and informal introduction to knot theory, giving many examples of knot invariants before the class of Vassiliev invariants is introduced. This is followed by a detailed study of the algebras of Jacobi diagrams and 3-graphs, and the construction of functions on these algebras via Lie algebras. The authors then describe two constructions of a universal invariant with values in the algebra of Jacobi diagrams: via iterated integrals and via the Drinfeld associator, and extend the theory to framed knots. Various other topics are then discussed, such as Gauss diagram formulae, before the book ends with Vassiliev's original construction. Features Summary A detailed exposition of the theory with an emphasis on its combinatorial aspects. Author S. Chmutov (Author), S.V. Duzhin (Author), J. Mostovoy (Author) Publisher Cambridge UniversityPress Release date Pages 520 ISBN ISBN

Due regard is also paid to the political and economic circumstances which accompanied early railway construction in South Africa.............. That the book is based on sound scientific research will be evident from the numerous source references. It should therefore satisfy the demands of academics. Condition: Good. Previous owner's name on front page. This book is the story of the love affair between Miss Helene Hanff of New York and Messrs Marks and Co, sellers of rare and secondhand books, at 84 Charing Cross Road, London. An exchange of letters, all through the '40's and '50's, between Miss Hanff and Marks & Co., Booksellers, 84 Charing Cross Road (London of course) and much of its charm depends on whether you respond to Miss Hanff. She's one of those instantly informal types - send me "just a nice book small enough to stick in a slacks pocket and take to Central Park" - or it might be the Bible or the Canterbury Tales. During the austerity she sends food packages; in time her correspondents at 84, Chafing Cross Road become more familiar - particularly one Frank Doel who dies at the end.... As a book it's not much more than a bibelot - casual squiggles with a little space for sentiment between the lines. Subtitle: Post-War Sculptures and Assemblages in South Africa Author: Elizabeth Rankin Publisher: Witwatersrand University Press () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good - Slight wear to cover edges Binding: Softcover Pages: 206 Dimensions: 28 x 22.5 x 1 cm Weight: 0.81 Price: 200 +++ by Elizabeth Rankin +++ The post-war period has seen a remarkable development in sculpture in bronze, steel and other metals in South Africa. Economic growth, the establishment of bronze foundries and developments in new media at art schools stimulated sculptural production amongst white sculptors, who drew on modernist trends from Europe and America. Excluded from art institutions, black artists rarely had the opportunity to share in international aspirations, but, making use of unusual media and informal training, produced innovative works. Images of Metal explores these developments and offers over twenty individual essays on sculptors represented in the University of the Witwatersrand collections. From wire toys and representational bronzes, through modernist steel constructions, to politically charged multi-media assemblages, the work show the common history and the creative diversity of sculpture in South Africa.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.
