This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Today, yachts are often equipped with electrical windlasses, autopilot, bow thrusters, etc. This equipment has also become much more reliable, making it possible to make long offshore passages without much knowledge of seamanship. However, as the coastguards in many countries can confirm, more and more yachts require assistance, even when they should be able to reach harbour on their own. In this book you will be shown the traditional techniques you should be familiar with - regarding rope handling, manoeuvring and anchoring - in order to make long or short passages safely. Each element is clearly explained alongside detailed illustrations, combining to make a straightforward and easy-to-follow guide. Although yacht gear is becoming more and more reliable, you can be almost sure that, sooner or later, it will fail or you will be out of electrical power to use it. Learning the traditional techniques may not only be necessary but is also both interesting and fun. Instead of waking up the entire harbour in the early hours with the noise of your bow thruster, you may, alternatively, use a spring line to get safely moored to or leave the pontoon quietly. Features Summary Modern yachts brim with equipment allowing them to be used without much knowledge of seamanship. Yet increasingly yachts require outside assistance. This book shows the techniques all boat users should be familiar with about rope handling... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Glamorgan's long and varied history has left layer upon layer of visible remains. Castles range from remarkable earthworks to magnificent structures such as Cardiff and Caerphilly. Impressive remains of three little known abbeys, at Ewenny, Margam and Neath, together with Llandaff Cathedral, testify to the wealth of the church in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The landscaped setting of Penrice Castle preserves a complete Georgian arcadia while Cardiff Castle is the supreme example of an exotic Victorian fantasy. Other major country houses, such as Ruperra and Wenvoe are now evocative ruins. In dramatic contrast are the chapels and workmen's institutes of the Valleys settlements and the landscape of heavy industry. Pride of place is given to Swansea, once a Regency resort, and Cardiff, coal metropolis. Their many fine public buildings are covered, as are their array of churches, chapels, arcades and solid suburban streets. A comprehensive gazetteer of places, in which buildings are described with lively and informed comment, is complemented by a detailed introduction which explains the broader context and builds a complete picture of the area's architectural identity. Glamorgan is the third volume in the Pevsner Buildings of Wales series. Each work is illustrated with numerous maps, plans and photographs, and concludes with Welsh language and architectural glossaries and indexes of artists and places. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days During the 18th Century, the Electorate of Saxony was a rich state of the Holy Roman Empire. Northern Saxony was one of most fertile parts of Germany, though fertility diminishes toward Ore Mountains of the south where Saxony long had important mineral production. The House of Wettin ruled Saxony since 1429. Between 1697 and 1763, the Electors of Saxony were also elected Kings of Poland. The Elector Frederick August I (12 May 1670-1 February 1733), also known as "Sun King" of Saxony, was elected King of Poland with the support of Austria and the help of Russia when the former King Stanislaw I Leszczynski, supported by France, was forced to flee after the Swedish defeat of Poltava in 1709. The Elector married Maria Josepha, sister of the Emperor Charles VI of Austria. The Emperor, having no male heirs was obsessed with the partition of the vast Imperial territories after his death. He issued on 19 April, 1713, an edict to ensure that the Habsburg hereditary possession could be inherited by a daughter, the Pragmatic Sanction. Frederick August I recognised the edict. When Frederick August died in 1733, Leszczynski, the archenemy of the House of Wettin, with the support of France and Spain, contested the election of Frederick August II of Saxony as King of Poland. This led to the War of the Polish Succession. The new Elector inherited an efficient and modern army. Forged by Field Marshall von Flemming on new lines between 1717 and 1727, this re-born army could match the other European countries. Frederick August II, aided by the Russian army and supported by Austria, managed to defeat Leszczynski's supporters, and after a short but bloody conflict he was elected King of Poland. Next the Saxon army fought as an auxiliary in the Austrian service in Hungary against the Turks, and on the Rhine against the French. In 1741, Saxony reneged on the Pragmatic Sanction and sided with France, Bavaria, and Prussia when Frederick II of Prussia invaded Silesia after the death of Emperor Charles VI. The Saxons fought against Maria Theresia's Austrian army during the First Silesian War, occupied Prague and campaigned in both Bohemia and Moravia. Thereafter, Prussia signed a unilateral peace with Austria. Saxony signed a separate cease-fire and France was left alone. Years of armed peace followed until the Second Silesian War. During the war, Saxony sided with Austria. The Prussian army crossed the border and invaded Saxony. The Saxon army was badly defeated at Kesseldorf on 15 December, 1745. The Second Silesian War was over. Peace once again reigned in Europe until 1756 when France changed alliances. Frederick II of Prussia launched another preventive war and invaded Saxony. Caught totally unprepared, the Saxon army retired to Pirna where it was surrounded by an overwhelming Prussian force. With no food, the Saxon army was forced to lay down its arms and surrender unconditionally. The prisoners were incorporated into the Prussian army. A massive desertion followed and soon a Saxon Corps was formed in Bohemia. The Saxon Auxiliary Corps of 10,000 men was transferred to French service and fought until the end of the Seven Years War. It was repatriated in 1763. Volume I of this work deals with the Saxon army of the years 1730-1763. The campaigns, the commanders, the guards mounted units, and the line cavalry units of this overshadowed army are treated. Lavishly illustrated by Franco Saudelli, the volume shows the elegance of the Saxon army and particularly an army misjudged by Frederick II of Prussia as "weak".   Written by Mat Johnson Art by Warren Pleece Photo cover "[An] engrossing graphic novel, with its smart dialogue and sharp images." - The New York Times Writer Mat Johnson, winner of the prestigious Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for fiction, constructs a fearless graphic novel that is both a page-turning mystery and a disturbing exploration of race and self-image in America, masterfully illustrated with rich period detail by Warren Pleece (THE INVISIBLES, HELLBLAZER). In the early 20th century, when lynchings were commonplace throughout the American South, a few courageous reporters from the North risked their lives to expose these atrocities. They were African-American men who, due to their light skin color, could pass for white. They called this dangerous assignment going "incognegro." Zane Pinchback, a reporter for the New York-based New Holland Herald, is sent to investigate the arrest of his own brother, charged with the brutal murder of a white woman in Mississippi. With a lynch mob already swarming, Zane must stay "incognegro" long enough to uncover the truth behind the murder in order to save his brother - and himself. 136 pg, B&W, mature readers

This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

Imagine if, on an ordinary day, war came. Imagine it turned your town to rubble. Imagine going on a long and difficult journey - all alone. Imagine finding no welcome at the end of it. Then imagine a child who gives you something small but very, very precious... When the government refused to allow 3000 child refugees to enter this country in 2016, Nicola Davies was so angry she wrote a poem. It started a campaign for which artists contributed drawings of chairs, symbolising a seat in a classroom, education, kindness, the hope of a future. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with only light age yellowing on the margins.
