Despite this apparent demise, Lara returns in Tomb Raider Chronicles, an adventure that features previously unseen episodes from her career. Old friends of Lara who have gathered for her funeral and to swap stories about her exploits introduce the stories. The first level is set in Rome, and is classic Lara; plenty of jumping and puzzle solving with a minimum of gunplay, and is reminiscent of the very first Tomb Raider --it even features the comedy bad guys Pierre and Larson from that game. This chapter also serves as an introduction to Lara's various moves and is a real nostalgia-fest for longtime fans. The other chapters have distinct themes: on a spooky deserted island an unarmed teenage Lara must get through by wits alone, there is an action-packed level set on a submarine and, most intriguing of all, Lara infiltrates a high-tech building and utilises various stealth techniques. This is very Metal Gear Solid -esque and possibly indicates the direction the series will take in future. (Lara's not really dead? Now there's a surprise.) Unfortunately, the fiddly control system still remains, and the graphics have only been given a slight polish, but to combat this the customary array of new moves have been added--this time Lara can use a tightrope, for example--but these are essentially cosmetic. The gameplay overall hasn't evolved much, but thankfully the puzzles are less obscure this time around, and the levels are tightly designed, which cuts down on the aimless wandering that was common in the middle games of the series. Tomb Raider fans will be very happy with what is probably the most purely enjoyable game since the first. Lara-phobes will take more convincing, but all the hype that surrounds her shouldn't obscure the fact that the divine Ms Croft hasn't appeared in a bad game yet and Tomb Raider Chronicles is no exception. -- Michael Bartley

The environment is now more interactive, so more things react to being shot at, and you also get to go on co-operative missions with other allies. The overall level of AI has been improved so the enemy is now more responsive and will react to your fire accordingly. There is a new range of weapons for Manon to use, but overall they have the same effect as the original. The sound is also highly impressive; the footsteps of approaching guards seem to echo off every wall and the multilingual shouts add to a very encompassing gaming environment. The first-person view and controls are the same as the predecessor, which are simple and easy to get the hang of while using the analogue stick to control the speed of your movement is noteworthy and extremely effective task to master. Perhaps the only shortcoming of the game lies in the visual presentation: the gameplay graphics are impressive and clear, but cannot match that of the more powerful consoles. There are still a few problems with the polygon mapping, but nothing that detracts from the playability of the game. Overall, Medal of Honor: Underground has all the glory of its predecessor and is just as addictive. So if you have sat screaming at Simon, Dr Fox, Nicky and Pete and declaiming that you could do a better job with your hands tied behind you back, then the new management sim, Rock Manager might just be the game for you. Rock Manager is basically a series of missions where you have to take your no-hopers and turn them into superstars. The first mission is to form a band, get a record contract, release a single and get it in the top 10. Then you have various other tasks from organising a comeback tour for a bunch of aging metal heads, to persuading a reluctant musician to re-enter the limelight so you can throw him to the media lions and get your cut before he gives up the wonderful business we call show, for good. The recording studio is probably the most open-ended bit of the game play. Here you get to twiddle your knobs, increase your time-shift and hire some talented session musicians to drown out the waling of your newbies. Once you have a song its time to pimp it round the record companies and try and get a deal and then the fun bit starts. You need to release an album. First get your sleeve designed (there are several options to choose from at the graphic designers pad) then schedule a release date. Then you need to build up some hype by playing a few gigs at the various venues in town, sending the local hacks some press kits and even getting a music video made. As far as the game is concerned, there are a few glitches in what appears to be a really good concept. The game play appears quite linear; often there seems to be one particular way to win a mission so you spend hours trying to find the formula. The second problem is that there isnt a save option so if you make a really stupid mistake in an otherwise exemplary career you have to start again. But then thats the music biz for you¿¿¿you are only as good as your last big hit. -- Kristen Bowditch

The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.
