In 1779, HBC commissioned the textile mill of Thomas Empson of Witney, Oxfordshire, to produce 'pointed' blankets. During the 1800s, their warmth and durability made them a favourite of the Native peoples, traders, and pioneers. Today, these blankets are still essential gear. They have accompanied explorers to the top of Everest and to the heart of Antarctica and have been used for everything from sled and boat sails to panning for gold. This lavishly illustrated book tells the remarkable story of the blanket that has 'covered centuries.'" Condition:  The book is in "As New" Condition.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days For thousands of years prior to Henry Hudson's voyage, the Hudson River was a vital commercial and strategic route for the indigenous peoples who settled near its banks. The river's importance continued for centuries afterward, linking the great trading center of Manhattan with remote places upstate and beyond. In Revolutionary times, the successful struggle for the Hudson was key to American victory over the power of the British military. The Hudson River railroad succeeded earlier modes of transportation in the Hudson Valley--the river sloop, the Albany Post Road, the steamboat, and the Erie Canal. The Hudson Line was both an early product of America's industrial age and a catalyst for the intense and complex developments of that age. The advent of photography coincided with the inauguration of the Hudson River railroad, and American photographers were on-hand to witness and record the progress of commerce and community in the villages, towns, and cities along the Hudson River Line. Dear Mr Cornford, It is with regret that I begin the task of writing to you about your niece, Emily. Her recent behaviour, which I have outlined to you in previous letters, compels me to request that she be formally removed from the school and returned to your care with immediate effect...' And so Emily Hudson, niece and ward, is dispatched into the care of her distant and cold uncle, to take residence at the family's Newport beach house at the outbreak of the Civil War. She is an orphan, the sole member of her family not claimed by consumption. In that first lonely summer, it is Emily's cousin William - himself an outsider - who is her saviour. Her spirit and vibrancy are at odds with the stilted climate of American society: a woman should be a paragon of virtue, definitely not an aspiring painter with no fortune to speak of. William's friendship offers Emily the chance to escape to London to pursue her dreams, but his patronage soon turns darker and more controlling. And as Emily's health falters, she turns to some rather unsuitable means to find the release she craves... Format:Paperback Pages:368

Hudson's original 1893 account of the birds found in a village in southeast England and compares the species and populations that occurred then with those that are present today. The striking differences are explored in relation to changes in the countryside during the intervening century and through anecdotes gathered from local residents. Incorporating the original text of W. H. Hudson (cofounder of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) from ca. 1893, it includes species accounts of birds in typical rural villages at that time, behavior of countryside birds and our relationship with them, a reminder of a slower pace of life, and a reflection on the many changes in village life and its effects on bird life down the years to the present time. Containing anecdotal considerations of birds and our current generation's knowledge of them, it is illustrated in sepia and full-color images. But many more do not fulfil the four basic requirements of democracy: free and fair elections, active participation of citizens in politics, protection of human rights, and the rule of law. Since 2015, far-right and populist politicians have been on the rise throughout the West. Is populism the new face of democracy? Is democracy simply the will of the people? Can any existing government claim to be truly democratic? This captivating, articulate volume explores and interrogates each form of democracy and questions whether they remain fit for purpose today. Paperback. English. Quercus. 2011. In fair/good condition. 1867, Canada: as winter tightens its grip on the isolated settlement of Dove River, a man is brutally murdered and a 17-year old boy disappears. Tracks leaving the dead man?s cabin head north towards the forest and the tundra beyond. In the wake of such violence, people are drawn to the township ? journalists, Hudson?s Bay Company men, trappers, traders ? but do they want to solve the crime, or exploit it?One-by-one the assembled searchers set out from Dove River, pursuing the tracks across a desolate landscape home only to wild animals, madmen and fugitives, variously seeking a murderer, a son, two sisters missing for 17 years, a forgotten Native American culture, and a fortune in stolen furs before the snows settle and cover the tracks of the past for good.In an astonishingly assured debut, Stef Penney deftly weaves adventure, suspense, revelation and humour into a panoramic historical romance, an exhilarating thriller, a keen murder mystery and ultimately, with the sheer scope and quality of her storytelling, one of the books of the year.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The Battle of Saratoga in 1777 ended with British general John Burgoyne's troops surrendering to the American rebel army commanded by General Horatio Gates. Historians have long seen Burgoyne's defeat as a turning point in the American Revolution because it convinced France to join the war on the side of the colonies, thus ensuring American victory. But that traditional view of Saratoga overlooks the complexity of the situation on the ground. Setting the battle in its social and political context, Theodore Corbett examines Saratoga and its aftermath as part of ongoing conflicts among the settlers of the Hudson and Champlain valleys of New York, Canada, and Vermont. This long, more local view reveals that the American victory actually resolved very little. In transcending traditional military history, Corbett examines the roles not only of enlisted Patriot and Redcoat soldiers but also of landowners, tenant farmers, townspeople, American Indians, Loyalists, and African Americans. He begins the story in the 1760s, when the first large influx of white settlers arrived in the New York and New England backcountry. Ethnic and religious strife marked relations among the colonists from the outset. Conflicting claims issued by New York and New Hampshire to the area that eventually became Vermont turned the skirmishes into a veritable civil war. These pre-Revolution conflicts--which determined allegiances during the Revolution--were not affected by the military outcome of the Battle of Saratoga. After Burgoyne's defeat, the British retained control of the upper Hudson-Champlain valley and mobilized Loyalists and Native allies to continue successful raids there even after the Revolution. The civil strife among the colonists continued into the 1780s, as the American victory gave way to violent strife amounting to class warfare. Corbett ends his story with conflicts over debt in Vermont, New Hampshire, and finally Massachusetts, where the sack of Stockbridge--part of Shays's Rebellion in 1787--was the last of the civil disruptions that had roiled the landscape for the previous twenty years. "No Turning Point "complicates and enriches our understanding of the difficult birth of the United States as a nation. This book leads you on a journey through the life, work and legacy of one of history's most intriguing figures.' The Times In an engaging personal narrative interwoven with historical research, Martin Kemp discusses a life spent immersed in the world of Leonardo, and his encounters with great and lesser academics, collectors and curators, devious dealers and unctuous auctioneers, major scholars and authors, pseudo-historians and fantasists. He shares how he has grappled with swelling legions of `Leonardo loonies', walked on the eggshells of vested interests in academia and museums, and fended off fusillades of non-Leonardos, sometimes more than one a week. Examining the greatest masterpieces, from the Last Supper to Salvator Mundi, through the expert's eye, we learn first-hand of the thorny questions that surround attribution, the scientific analyses that support the experts' interpretations, and the continuing importance of connoisseurship. Throughout, from the most scholarly interpretations to the popularity of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, we are reminded of Leonardo's unique genius and wonder at how an artist from 500 years ago continues to make such compelling posthumous demands on all those who engage with him. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days During the tense months leading up to the American Civil War, the cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point continued their education even as the nation threatened to dissolve around them. Students from both the North and South struggled to understand events such as John Brown's Raid, the secession of eleven states from the Union, and the attack on Fort Sumter. By graduation day, half the class of 1862 had resigned; only twenty-eight remained, and their class motto -- "Joined in common cause" -- had been severely tested. In For Brotherhood and Duty: The Civil War History of the West Point Class of 1862, Brian R. McEnany follows the cadets from their initiation, through coursework, and on to the battlefield, focusing on twelve Union and four Confederate soldiers. Drawing heavily on primary sources, McEnany presents a fascinating chronicle of the young classmates, who became allies and enemies during the largest conflict ever undertaken on American soil. Their vivid accounts provide new perspectives not only on legendary battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and the Overland and Atlanta campaigns, but also on lesser-known battles such as Port Hudson, Olustee, High Bridge, and Pleasant Hills. There are countless studies of West Point and its more famous graduates, but McEnany's groundbreaking book brings to life the struggles and contributions of its graduates as junior officers and in small units. Generously illustrated with more than one hundred photographs and maps, this enthralling collective biography illuminates the war's impact on a unique group of soldiers and the institution that shaped them. South African Art begins with the first artistic stirrings of our earliest ancestors and the first African kingdoms through to the creation of 3D figurative art and specialised artisans.  Very good condition. Paperback. SAPO postage with tracking number: R55.00. Extra items free. Written by Felix Carroll, Loved, Lost, Found is a collection of beautiful stories of everyday people who discover God's extraordinary mercy. They include a former abortionist, a blind man, an unfaithful husband, a former cult member, a rape victim, a prisoner, a former "workaholic," and a survivor of the "Miracle on the Hudson" plane crash, among others. The book begins with a story about Maureen Digan, whose miraculous healing in 1981 led to the beatification of Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Now recognized as a saint, this nun's revelations in the 1930s "known today as the message of Divine Mercy " play a major role in each one of the conversion stories in this collection. Through St. Faustina, Jesus reiterates for our times the Gospel message that He is Love and Mercy itself, calling us to turn to Him in trust, receive His mercy, and extend His mercy to others.
