Book in good condition but dustcover has creases and a bit worn around spine.  By Ned Middleton TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 2, 2007 If had to recommend two books to anyone seeking an excellent read which will make them laugh, I would look no further than "The Moon's a Balloon" and "Bring on the Empty Horses!" These are two of the funniest and most satisfying books I have ever read. There were several different aspects to David Niven's life. Having arrived in Hollywood, he was required to learn his trade in "B" movies before being allowed to enter the big time from where he eventually won an Oscar. Unlike some of the greats of Hollywood, he also put his entire acting career on hold whilst he served as a British officer in a fighting unit throughout WW2. "The Moon's a Balloon" recounts the first half of his life's story in which we meet some of the rich and famous stars of that Hollywood of yester-year and learn a little about each of these people and their various relationships. In "Bring on the Empty Horses" Niven confirms his credentials as an ingenious writer as he pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes in this sequel. Not once does he stoop to the level of cheap gossip, not once does attack the person he is describing. Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of humour. Only a writer who had also been a central part of that glorious cast of characters and real-life people could possibly have produced this work. I promise, you will not want either book to end - they really are so enjoyable. There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people you just know they would approve of what he has said. As an actor, David Niven was the good guy, the dashing hero, the sort of character to whom we would all wish to aspire. As an author, he writes about his fellow personalities from the Hollywood of yester-year with whom he worked and came into contact without exposing their shortcomings. Instead, he simply makes us laugh and, as I say, those of whom he writes would, therefore, approve. If you are a fan of the olden days, the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy these two books. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy them even more. Truth is, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying either product. What more can I say except I know you will not be disappointed.

Paperback. English. Hodder & Stoughton. 2012. 546pp. Good condition. Cruelly cast out by the new leader of the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla leaves those she loves behind and travels alone through a stark, open land filled with dangerous animals but few people, searching for the Others, tall and fair like herself. The short summer gives her little time to look, and when she finds a sheltered valley with a herd of hardy steppe horses, she decides to stay and prepare for the long glacial winter ahead. Living with the Clan has taught Ayla many skills but not real hunting. She finally knows she can survive when she traps a horse, which gives her meat and a warm pelt for the winter, but fate has bestowed a greater gift, an orphaned foal with whom she develops a unique kinship.

2012 paperback brand new with 380 pages. R46 postage in SA. Anglo-Boer War, Anglo-Boereoorlog. Deneys Reitz, who is now one of General Smuts's political lieutenants and a warm supporter of the British Commonwealth, fought through the South African War as our enemy. He enlisted on the outbreak of the war as a boy of seventeen and went through it to the bitter end. His father was President of the Orange Free State, and after peace was concluded he and his family went into exile. Later he returned to his own country; and later still fought in the Great War on the side of the Allies, first in West and South Africa, and then in France, where he was severely wounded, and where he came to command the First Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Commando abounds in interesting sidelights and portraits-Kruger, De Wet, Smuts, Kitchener. One of the most remarkable passages gives us a glimpse of the young Winston Churchill as prisoner of war in Pretoria. It is difficult to speak of this book in anything short of a string of superlatives. The spirit of it is magnificent; the uncomplaining courage of the boy-fighter rouses memories of all the stories down the ages about devotion to an ideal. And not one of them is a finer one than this

County Mayo is rich in the traditions of Ireland, legends that Branna O’Dwyer fully embraces in her life and in her work as the proprietor of The Dark Witch shop, which carries soaps, lotions, and candles for tourists, made with Branna’s special touch. Branna’s strength and selflessness hold together a close circle of friends and family—along with their horses and hawks and her beloved hound. But there’s a single missing link in the chain of her life: love… She had it once—for a moment—with Finbar Burke, but a shared future is forbidden by history and blood. Which is why Fin has spent his life traveling the world to fill the abyss left in him by Branna, focusing on work rather than passion. Branna and Fin’s relationship offers them both comfort and torment. And though they succumb to the heat between them, there can be no promises for tomorrow. A storm of shadows threatens everything that their circle holds dear. It will be Fin’s power, loyalty, and heart that will make all the difference in an age-old battle between the bonds that hold their friends together and the evil that has haunted their families for centuries. Forward lean; a front corner curling; small section of front film peeling slightly.

Over the last few years Aurum has re-published three classic biographies of great racehorses: Arkle, Desert Orchid and Red Rum - all courageous, indefatigable National Hunt horses who won the big, gruelling steeplechases. Now, for the fourth title in the series, Aurum publishes the story of one of Britain's greatest flat racing horses, Mill Reef, a magnificent athlete that enjoyed a short, meteoric career tragically truncated by injury. Owned by the wealthy American Paul Mellon, in one year, 1971, Mill Reef won the Derby, the French Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. A further glittering run in 1972, when he had already won the Coronation Cup, was shockingly curtailed when Mill Reef was found to have broken a leg. But then his story had an extraordinary happy ending: he was not destroyed: remarkable medical treatment saved and healed his leg and saw him go on to a priceless stud career. John Oaksey's book is an affectionate and enthralling chronicle by one of racing's best-loved characters. Format:Paperback Pages:32

Did belong to a library before but book and wrapper remained in a very good condition >>>  October, 1858. In the manor house of Ambleden, the servants were lighting the fires, the children were stirring in the nursery and Sir William was preparing for a substantial breakfast before the morning's cubbing. In the afternoon, if the weather held, there would be hunting. Young Mundy, eight-year-old son of the head groom, awoke to a comfortable world. He was already able to run errands for his father, to fetch a pail or a blanket, to hold a bridle, and soon he would be able to act as groom when the children rode their ponies. -  This is the world in which T. H. White begins his panorama of the Victorian era, a lovely lyrical novel in which the appealing figure of Mundy is the focal point of an ample historical tapestry. Through Mundy's eyes we watch the drama and spectacle of the passing years, as he leaves the quiet, generous contry life of the mid-nineteenth century to serve in the fierce campaigns of the Zulu War. The Edwardian era finds Mundy coachman to a redheaded Russian countess who is eccentric enough still to drive behind horses when the day of the motorcar has already arrived— with the King himself, an enthusiastic and early patron, "tearing about the country at twenty miles an hour!" *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days The South African War, popularly known as the Boer War, is memorable for many reasons. It was a final act to the great European scramble for colonies in Africa, and unique in that it saw the colonizing power making near-modern war on a group of white Africans. It was, however, not solely an affair between Boer and Briton. Indeed, one of the ironies of what was officially regarded as a "white man's war" is to be found in the numbers of black Africans who were also caught up in its violence, as both participants and victims. A century later we can more clearly see, recount and analyze events that have often been distorted or barely acknowledged.;This reference work starts with a chronology of South Africa from pre-colonial times to 1994, followed by a synopsis of the main events of the war. This serves as a convenient point of departure for exploring the more than 320 alphabetical entries that form the heart of the book.;These deal not only with the main personalities, places and events of the war but also with such general topics as the role of black people in the conflict, blockhouses, casualties, horses, infantry, medals, photography, railways, soldiers, spies, war artists, war correspondents, and weapons. A system of cross-referencing allows the reader easy access to related topics. There are four maps showing Southern Africa at the turn of the century, and an index to subjects which do not have separate entries.
