It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days In 1931, City Lightsintroduced Charlie Chaplin's new female star to the world. The film - defiantly silent in the age of talkies - was an immediate and international hit. The actress who played the romantic lead had never been on screen or stage before. Chaplin's film turned her into the most famous girl in the world. Virginia Cherrill was the beautiful daughter of an Illinois rancher, who ran away to live through some of Hollywood's wildest years. She was the adoring first wife who broke Cary Grant's heart when she left him; who turned down the gloriously eligible Maharajah of Jaipur to befriend his wife and rescue her from purdah. Virginia Cherrill presided, during the thirties, over one of England's loveliest houses, as the Countess of Jersey. Everybody sought her friendship. All that eluded her was love. And when she found it, she gave up all she had to marry a handsome and penniless Polish flying ace, whose dream it was to become a cowboy. In this glorious, and undiscovered story of Hollywood, international high society, wartime drama and romance, Miranda Seymour works from unpublished sources to recapture the personality of a woman so vividly enchanting that none could resist her. This is the story of Cinderalla in reverse: of the poor girl who won everything - and gave up all for love. Breathtakingly romantic, exquisitely written, this is the stuff that dreams are made of... Book in good condition but dustcover has creases and a bit worn around spine.  By Ned Middleton TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 2, 2007 If had to recommend two books to anyone seeking an excellent read which will make them laugh, I would look no further than "The Moon's a Balloon" and "Bring on the Empty Horses!" These are two of the funniest and most satisfying books I have ever read. There were several different aspects to David Niven's life. Having arrived in Hollywood, he was required to learn his trade in "B" movies before being allowed to enter the big time from where he eventually won an Oscar. Unlike some of the greats of Hollywood, he also put his entire acting career on hold whilst he served as a British officer in a fighting unit throughout WW2. "The Moon's a Balloon" recounts the first half of his life's story in which we meet some of the rich and famous stars of that Hollywood of yester-year and learn a little about each of these people and their various relationships. In "Bring on the Empty Horses" Niven confirms his credentials as an ingenious writer as he pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes in this sequel. Not once does he stoop to the level of cheap gossip, not once does attack the person he is describing. Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of humour. Only a writer who had also been a central part of that glorious cast of characters and real-life people could possibly have produced this work. I promise, you will not want either book to end - they really are so enjoyable. There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people you just know they would approve of what he has said. As an actor, David Niven was the good guy, the dashing hero, the sort of character to whom we would all wish to aspire. As an author, he writes about his fellow personalities from the Hollywood of yester-year with whom he worked and came into contact without exposing their shortcomings. Instead, he simply makes us laugh and, as I say, those of whom he writes would, therefore, approve. If you are a fan of the olden days, the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy these two books. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy them even more. Truth is, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying either product. What more can I say except I know you will not be disappointed.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Max Ophuls, who is consideredone of the greatest film directors of all time, has long been seen as an "auteur"--the artist in complete control of his work. Lutz Bacher's examination of his American career gives us a unique perspective on the struggle on the workings of the Hollywood system and the struggle of a visionary to function within it. He thus establishes clear connections between the production contexts of Ophuls's American films and their idiosyncratic style. Drawing on documents in many archives and on interviews with more than sixty of Ophuls's contemporaries, Bacher traces the European director's struggle to find a niche in the U.S. film industry. He describes how Ophuls ran the gamut from ghost writing to substitute directing, to a debilitating association with Preston Sturges and Howard Hughes, to making four films--Letter from and Unknown Woman and Caught among them--in thirty months, and then returning to Europe with a runaway production that was to have starred Greta Garbo. Throughout, Bacher demonstrates that Ophuls's bending of conventional Hollywood methods to his own will through compromise and subversion allowed him to achieve a style that was both uniquely American and a point of departure from his later work. A rare synthesis of production history, stylistic analysis, and biography, this book is essential reading for serious film scholars and fans of the director's work.   Full of feuding royalty, family melodrama, comical fools, and fantastic creatures, Star Wars has always been the most Shakespearean of Hollywood blockbusters. Now it's presented in a manner that Shakespeare himself would recognize - with classic iambic pentameter and Elizabethan-style stage directions. Fans will love the Star Wars jokes and Shakespearean flourishes (R2-D2 launches into dramatic soliloquies whenever the other characters leave the stage). Text will be accompanied by fantastic Elizabethan woodcut illustrations of Chewbacca, C-3PO, and more.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In the early days of filmmaking, before many of Hollywood's elaborate sets and soundstages had been built, it was common for movies to be shot on location. Decades later, Hollywood filmmakers rediscovered the practice of using real locations and documentary footage in their narrative features. Why did this happen? What caused this sudden change? Renowned film scholar R. Barton Palmer answers this question in Shot on Location by exploring the historical, ideological, economic, and technological developments that led Hollywood to head back outside in order to capture footage of real places. His groundbreaking research reveals that wartime newsreels had a massive influence on postwar Hollywood film, although there are key distinctions to be made between these movies and their closest contemporaries, Italian neorealist films. Considering how these practices were used in everything from war movies like Twelve O'Clock High to westerns like The Searchers, Palmer explores how the blurring of the formal boundaries between cinematic journalism and fiction lent a ""reality effect"" to otherwise implausible stories.Shot on Location describes how the period's greatest directors, from Alfred Hitchcock to Billy Wilder, increasingly moved beyond the confines of the studio. At the same time, the book acknowledges the collaborative nature of moviemaking, identifying key roles that screenwriters, art designers, location scouts, and editors played in incorporating actual geographical locales and social milieus within a fictional framework. Palmer thus offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Hollywood transformed the way we view real spaces. Half Empty by David Rakoff, 2010 Hardcover, 240 pages Published 2010 by Doubleday (first published 2010) The inimitably witty David Rakoff, New York Times bestselling author of Don’t Get Too Comfortable, defends the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst, because you’ll never be disappointed. In this deeply funny (and, no kidding, wise and poignant) book, Rakoff examines the realities of our sunny,  gosh¬ everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture and finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams won’t come true. The book ranges from the personal to the universal, combining stories from Rakoff’s reporting and accounts of his own experi¬ences: the moment when being a tiny child no longer meant adults found him charming but instead meant other children found him a fun target; the perfect late evening in Manhattan when he was young and the city seemed to brim with such pos¬sibility that the street shimmered in the moonlight—as he drew closer he realized the streets actually flickered with rats in a feeding frenzy. He also weaves in his usual brand Oscar Wilde–worthy cultural criticism (the tragedy of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, for instance). Whether he’s lacerating the musical Rent for its cutesy depic¬tion of AIDS or dealing with personal tragedy, his sharp obser¬vations and humorist’s flair for the absurd will have you positively reveling in the power of negativity.(less)

Los Angeles by Peter Moore Smith   It is a hoarse whisper over a crackling cell phone - "Angel" - and then the connection is lost. Angel is convinced that the voice belongs to his beautiful and enigmatic neighbor, Angela - and that she is terrified for her life. He paces the floor, waiting for the phone to ring again, calls the police, searches her apartment, but there is no trace of her anywhere, not for days. So begins a haunted man's quest to uncover what happened to the woman he has fallen in love with. Only now does he realize that he knows nearly nothing about her. Angel has his secrets, too. He is the son of one of Hollywood's most successful movie producers, but he has turned away from that bright and power-ridden world. Instead, he leads a cloistered existence, nursing an unfinished screenplay as Ridley Scott's Blade Runner loops ceaselessly in his darkened apartment. But now, for the first time in years, because of Angela's sudden disappearance, Angel is propelled into action. Following the few clues he has gathered about her, he trails Angela through the hard glitter of Los Angeles days and nights. With every new piece of knowledge arrives another question and an even more chilling possibility: Did he merely imagine Angela? Is someone deliberately leading him? Is the phantom he is pursuing the very fear he has been running from? In the murky underworld beneath the bright surface of Los Angeles, everything he knew about her - and himself - begins to unravel. In this city of secrets that aren't meant to be told and people who aren't meant to be found, Angel may soon discover that the most dangerous lies of all are the ones you tell yourself.

Modelled after Maria Shriver's Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah's goal with Put On Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem. A US Dept. of Justice survey found that females aged 16-24 are more vulnerable to partner violence than any other group, almost triple the national average. Cases like Chris Brown's assault on pop star Rihanna showed an ugly side of adolescent life. However, Queen Latifah has always been a shining example of a woman happy with herself and unwilling to compromise to fit into the 'hollywood ideal' of what a confident beautiful woman should look like.
