It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days From Macaulay in the 19th century to Fukuyama in the late 20th, historians have often been lulled into thinking that things can only get better. Such belief in progress, argues leading political commentator Simon Heffer, may be typical of times of plenty, but it ignores a less palatable truth: that, since the beginnings of recorded history, the major events in international relations can be attributed to a single cause, the desire by rulers to assert or protect their power. Taking a panoramic view from the days of Thucydides up to the present, Heffer offers a fourfold analysis of the motive forces behind the pursuit of power: land, wealth, God and minds. If we understand these forces, he contends, we can more clearly understand why history is destined to repeat itself. Features Summary In this essay on power, leading political commentator Simon Heffer confronts the notion of history as progress. He argues that the desire to achieve or preserve power has always been... Author Simon Heffer Publisher Notting Hill Editions Release date Pages 160 ISBN ISBN

A Military History of Modern South Africa - Ian van der Waag - Jonathan Ball - 2015 - 388pp,  black and white photographs - Paperback. The 20th Century has been one of enduring, rapid and fundamental social and political change. In Southern Africa, innumerable wars, rebellions, uprisings and protests have marked the integration, disintegration and then reintegration of both society and subcontinent during this period. The century started with a brief but total war. Less than ten years later victorious Britain brought the conquered Boer republics, and the Cape and Natal colonies, together into the Union of South Africa. And the military of this early creation served not only in all of the major wars of the twentieth century, but also in a number of regional struggles: rebellion on the part of Afrikaner nationalists, industrial unrest fanned by syndicalists, and uprisings conducted chiefly but not exclusively by disenfranchised black South Africans. The century ended as it started, with a war. But this was a limited war, a flashpoint of the Cold War, which embraced more than just the subcontinent and lasted a long, twenty-three years.     The first of its kind, A Military History of Modern South Africa provides an overview of South African military history from 1899 to 2000. Focusing on the campaigns and battles, it also brings discussion on the evolving military policy and the development of the South African military as an institution into a single volume.

A destination for beachgoers for a century, the Manhattan Beach Pier extends 928 feet out over the Pacific with the octagonal "Roundhouse" situated at the far end. Both the pier and Roundhouse have, through the years, come to symbolize this affluent seaside community. The concept for a pier at its present location can be traced to , when the Potencia Townsite Company acquired the land. The first survey map, recorded in , clearly labeled the object at the end of Center Street (now Manhattan Beach Boulevard) as the "Old Iron Pier." The pier has been storm-ravaged, rebuilt, and restored while a century of recreation, world-class sporting events, and celebrity visitors have added to its appeal as one of Los Angeles County's notable coastal attractions.     COMMEMORATIVE PROOF GRIQUA R 5 NICKEL COIN WITH MAGNIFIER ONLY 2000 MINTED WORLDWIDE (PENDING) The Griqua Town R5 coin celebrates the history of South African coinage The 2015 Griqua Town coins are “coins about coins” R 5 Coin  Metal: Bi-Metal Alloy  Mass: 9.5 grams  Diameter: 26mm    The Griqua Town 200 R5 coin, released by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) on 12 January, celebrates the 200th anniversary of the creation of the first coinage in South Africa. As the first town to be established north of the Orange River, Griekwastad, or Griquatown as it is sometimes known in English, is one of the country's most important foundation towns. It was a stopover on the trade route and so was important for commerce throughout the history of the country. The town, 168 kilometres north of Kimberley, is also known for its abundance of semi-precious stones. The Griqua currency became the first South African currency in 1815, according to the Reserve Bank. It also became the country's first decimal coinage and the world's first Christian Missionary coinage. * The Griqua Town R5 coin is the fourth commemorative R5 issued by the Reserve Bank since the first bi-metallic R5 was introduced in 2004. Other notable commemorative coins include the 2008 Nelson Mandela 90th birthday coin and the 20th anniversary of democracy coin, issued in 2014.   The R5 coin features an image of the original 1815 Griquatown coin, engraved with the words "Coinage of Griqua Town 200. 1815 – 2015". The other side of the coin bears the South African coat of arms and the acronym, SARB. Mintage 2000  Generic Image
