JUNIOR SUPER CHEF FINALS Danika van der Walt (13), a pupil at Hoerskool Florida was announced the winner of the JHB Hirsch’s and Defy Junior Super Chef competition that took place in Fourways recently. Six finalists claimed their spot in the finals through various exciting stages of cook-off through the month of June at all Hirsch Branches around the country – Gauteng branches include Boksburg, Meadowdale, Centurion, Silverlakes, Strubens Valley and Fourways. Ranging from age 8 to 13 and from all over JHB, the enthusiastic finalists had to battle it out on the showroom floor. They had to show off their cooking skills, using a mystery bag of products and cooking on a Snappy Chef induction plate and Defy Microwave Air oven to impress judges. Van der Walt’s dish, a Beef Wellington with asparagus and blue cheese sauce was the judge’s favourite of the evening. “I’m so proud of her! She is a brilliant cook and her food always tastes so great! She was so fortunate to be in this position regardless of whether she won or not” Said Johan van der Walt, Danika’s very proud father. Danika started cooking and preparing meals for her family when she was six and her grandmother, Ina Willemse, has been her inspiration. “I love both cooking and baking. I have my own small business named “The Cake Fairy” and love to bake and decorate novelty cakes.” Said Van der Walt. Christine Phillips, a Judge on the evening, well known for her recent cook-book (The timeless family food Journal), qualified chef and founder of the “little cooks club” was involved in the JHB Junior Super Chef from the very beginning. “The highlight of this whole competition was watching how the contestants confidently plan their menus and final dish. It was an unforgettable experience working with these and the Hirsch’s team.” She said. Hirsch’s CEO, Mr Allan Hirsch was also a Judge at the finals. “We wanted to assist with the encouragement of young chefs and have been blown away with their ability to demonstrate the use of recently launched products in front of an audience.” He said. Second place went to 10 year Emily Gimaraens of St Peters Girls School (Fourways) and third place was awarded to 11 year old Dean Barnard of Laerskool Kruinsig (Kempton Park).

Whole Brain Thinking with Hirsch’s Networking is one of the most crucial skills any businessperson can have, and understanding this, Hirsch’s Meadowdale offers business people in the community the opportunity to develop relationships with other entrepreneurs and potential clients, and grow their business, through their monthly held Business Networking Mornings. Guest speaker at the June event, was Pepi Malamoglou who shared her expertise in Whole Brain communication and leadership to equip people to grow their own business. Pepi is an accomplished presenter and runs a successful training consultancy called Jordan Crossings, enabling people and companies to move from confusion to clarity. Pepi’s topic for the morning was; Left of right? Does it matter? According to the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. “Our brains are divided into quarters; Left brain 1, which is the upper part of the brain, left brain 2, the lower part of the brain, right brain one, upper part of the brain and right brain 2, which is the lower part of the brain. L1 users are mathematical, problem solvers, technical and analytical. L2 users are planners, controlled, conservative and administrative. R1 are conceptualizing, synthesizing, imaginative and artistic people. R2 users are talkers, musical, spiritual and emotional. Understanding your personal thinking preferences will enable you to optimize your ability to adapt your thinking, decision-making or communication style to a given situation: it will also explain why it is easier to communicate with some people than it is with others. Your profile will also cast light on why some elements of your education or work seem effortless and more satisfying and why some academic subjects or hobbies are more interesting and appealing to you. However, Pepi explained that it is possible to rewire your brain by thinking differently and become whole brain thinkers. Creativity is required in order for a person or business to be successful. In saying that it means that you need to use every quarter of your brain. Join Hirsch’s Business Networking Mornings and grow your seed of greatness. Hirsch Meadowdale recently hosted its monthly Ladies Networking Morning with Petra Laranjo as the guest speaker for the morning. Petra is a published author, inspirational speaker, results architect for business and a personal development facilitator who is driven by a purpose to grow business and people through purpose and presence. Eighteen years of experience across the style, entertainment, corporate marketing and PR industries led her to write her first book, ‘LIVING ON PURPOSE. The Key To Change Your Life And Impact Others.’ Petra is also the winner of this month’s Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Competition. Petra’s topic for the morning was ‘Image’. The message behind the topic was to grow you and your business by creating the right image in the minds of your clients. Petra explained that all it takes is a tenth of a second to form a first impression of a stranger and it takes eight positive interactions to change the opinion of someone. Petra then asked the questions; “How do you see yourself? What messages are you communicating about yourself?” The reality is that people treat you based on how you project yourself. It is important to know yourself and who you are. If you would like to be inspired, find your purpose in life and grow your business, join Hirsch’s monthly Ladies Networking Morning. To enter the Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever Competition, please contact letitia@hirschs.co.za for more information. The monthly finalists wins a R500,00 Hirsch gift voucher. The P stands for Predetermine your course of action. The L, lay out your goals, the A, Allow time for adjustments and the N, Notify key person. Norman spoke about the importance of every organization having a Business Strategy. He also spoke about three key factors that every strategy should have. 1. Vision: Your vision statement should offer more of a direction and include a perspective of corporate values. A vision might provide a direction for the company for the next five to 10 years, while also noting a commitment to integrity, transparency, openness and other such values. It should inspire employees and given them a sense of purpose. 2. Unique Value Proposition: Your UVP is a clear statement that describes the benefit of your offer, how you solve your customer’s needs and what distinguishes you from the competition. 3. Pillars of Focus: Your pillars of focus should include three factors; Brand, Profit and Resources. All strategies should be reviewed on a regular basis in order for it to work.
