Issue I was produced from a 240-unit Cylinder with it's number "12" imprinted on the right margin at the end of the 20th row. There were no bars on the top or bottom margins, but the top margin of the sheets in the final printings appeared with an unusual cylinder flaw in the form of a prominent brick-red mark varying in length and thickness above the centre arrow. It was caused by the chromium plating beginning to peel off the copper cylincer and from first of all being barely visible, it developed to the final stages where it stretched from above stamp no. 4 to the edge of no. 9. The flaw had a flattish base, but with a very much indented top line, not unlike a range of mountains seen at a distance - a feature which earned it the name of the "Drakensberg" variety. Quite exceptional item superb MNH but for 3 light hinge marks in margins. The first and scarcest stage of the flaw. Second stage Next stage The final stage

As per scans below. This very rare strip shows the UHB R10 V3 variety "Broken Frame" at 4 positions. It also shows the further variety of missing or faded lines in top right curl which is found with V3. The strip has been reinforced as indicated to prevent further perforation separation. MNH but for hinge on top stamp and at reinforcing between stamps 5 and 6.

Hard Cover, leather Boards, Gilt Title on front board, Gilt title and publisher to spine, leather is scuffed top corner of rear board leather has separated, head and tail of spine bumped, scuffed and short tears in the leather, bottom end of front hinge has a 5cm split in the leather, spine is sun faded. Marbled end papers, with a portrait frontispiece, a plate and several facsimiles of title-pages, a remarkably bright, clean, fresh copy, book block ALL edges are gilt. This is the famous first edition of Buxton Forman, contains the whole of Keats's known works in verse; the footnotes contain a large selection of variorum readings. Sixteen lines of the "The Eve of St. Mark", found by the Editor in a scrap-book lent to him by Frank Sabin, have not been printed in any other edition.

Boards are soiled, with some fading along the top edge, dust jacket shadow to end papers, end papers have some marks and light foxing. Front paste down has book dealers sticker, ffep has former owners name and a date. edges of book block have some light foxing, with some spotting occurring through preliminary and last few pages. some hinge creases are soiled. Dust Jacket designed by Willem Jordaan, is browning on the verso, is un-clipped, has a 3cm closed tear on the front cover at the head end, is scuffed and has some chipping.

Davey (Arthur M. ed.). Lawrence Richardson Selected Correspondence (1902-1903). Cape Town: VRS, 1977. VRS Second Series No 8. Lawrence Richardson, selections from whose correspondence comprise this volume, was a member of the Society of Friends who was involved in two fact-finding and humanitarian missions to South Africa soon after the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1900). His correspondence records meetings with some of the celebrities of the times - Emily Hobhouse, Mrs Koopmans-de Wet, Milner, Goold-Adams, Sargant, Botha, Smuts and Hertzog. His meticulous diaries detail his interviews and draw a perceptive picture of a society devastated by war.
