Misty mornings are quite a common sight here. The Gauteng province was originally formed from part of the old Transvaal province after South Africa's first free elections on 27 April . Gauteng was named in December and formerly known as the PWV (Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging) area. With less than 2% of the land area, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa and is situated in the heart of the Highveld. The name “Gauteng” is derived from Sesotho, meaning "Place of Gold".
