As the latest in a long line of games to take inspiration from Grand Theft Auto the whole game is set within the city of Babylon, which is yours to explore as you wish. Although there are no vehicles to carjack you can take part in some particularly brutal chariot races, if you get tired of walking and jumping around. The bigger ones can only be beaten with special button presses, which result in some spectacular finishing moves such as the Cylops whose eye Kratos plucks out of its socket or the cannon fodder zombies he slices in two. One of the best sequences though has Kratos leaping off the back of a Pegasus and onto a Gryphon, whose wings he promptly pulls off before falling to the world below. Most exciting moment: Just like the original this game recreates many of the best moments from ancient Greek mythology and movies. One particularly cool sequence involves trying to get a golden fleece that can reflect back the stony gaze of a gorgon. Since you ask: Many fans were surprised that this sequel wasnt on the PS3 but a next generation version is being planned. Original creator David Jaffe isnt working on either sequel at the moment though, but on an as yet unrevealed PSP project. Your character can also be one of seven different classes from burglar to hunter or minstrel. Not all races can be all of the classes though, so you must choose carefully. In gameplay terms things work in a similar manner to World of Warcraft and other fantasy games, with up to six characters grouping to gather to form a "fellowship", which in turn can team up with up to 24 others to go on larger raids in enemy controlled areas. The game includes seven crafting professions and three gathering professions, allowing each character the chance to learn and utilise unique skills, from manufacturing armour to cooking. Review Morally ambiguous characters are all the rage in video games nowadays, but they always tend to be violent crime games. This is essentially a cross between the old Dungeon Keeper games and Nintendos Pikmin, where you play a Sauron-like dark lord in a fantasy world fill of so many corrupt and unpleasant people you often end up playing the de facto hero. Like Pikmin this is a mix of third person action game and a real-time strategy, the obvious difference being youre now in charge of a horde of goblins instead of cute little flower creatures. Although you directly control your bad self in the game youve only got some simple axe attacks and magic spells. Instead your main interaction with the world is via your goblin minions. You can either target an enemy and tell them to attack or control the biggest group directly with the right stick. One of the main currencies in the game then is lifeforce, with which you can instantly generate a new minion. This can be obtained from some enemies, and also sheep, but also from innocent villagers if you want to be really nasty. Although the game may lack moral complexities the capacity for strategy is more developed, as you eventually gain the ability to set ambushes and cast spells on minions. The games graphics are generally attractive, even with a jarringly short draw distance, but its the gameplay that really impresses here with something genuinely out of the ordinary in terms of both strategy and motivation.
