Opening the season on Saturday 20 December is the enormously popular Delft Big Band. In five short years this band has proved that when given a chance young people from disadvantaged communities can reach great heights. From never handling an instrument or reading music the achievements are nothing short of phenomenal. In the band toured France at the invitation of the French Government, and performed to standing ovations wherever they appeared. Since then two tours of Sweden, performances at the Liverpool Brouhaha Festival, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and for Prince Charles and Camilla, to whom they were personally introduced, has seen them embraced the world over. Under the dedicated tutelage of much loved professional musician and trumpeter, Ian Smith, this musical miracle has been achieved. In terms of musical excellence, the band is truly astounding. It is not just an enthusiastic bunch of youngsters playing well-known charts. It is a driving, pitch perfect big band, that can hold its own on any platform. This is proof positive of the enthusiasm and dedication of the band members. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) invites citizens of SA to visit our National Botanical Gardens (NBGs) during an ‘Open Day’ on Saturday 18 July in celebration of Mandela Day. These NBGs are situated in 7 provinces. The significance of this day is to offer garden visitors an opportunity to enjoy the richness of South Africa’s bio-diversity while contributing towards a worthy cause. Entrance into the garden will be free on this day; however, we request donations of sanitary pads or toiletries. By donating a pack of sanitary pads or toiletries, visitors will be contributing towards restoring the dignity of underprivileged school girls who miss about 7 days a month of schooling to avoid accidental embarrassment. Since February , he has presented his own TV series on KyknetMusiek and began filming his new series ‘Sing in Harmonie’ for KyknetMusiek in August, which will be flighted later this year.Kyknetmusiek is currently screening six of his music videos.  He released his album Hartsoldaat in . The National Youth Orchestra are celebrating their 50th birthday in style with an exciting selection of music ranging from classical favourites to jazz greats. The concert features top international and local guest artists including world famous soprano Barbara Hendricks, Grammy Award winning saxophonist Magnus Lindgren, Standard Bank Young Artist bass guitarist Concord Nkabinde, and sensational local drummer Rob Watson.  The orchestra will be conducted by one of Europe’s top young conductors, Fredrik Burstedt.  The season runs from 23 November to 5 April . The Summer Sunset Concerts take place at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
