Volume 2 1971. Hard  cover with dust cover, 527 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. Compiled and translated by R.Raven-Hart During the first fifty years of Dutch colonisation at the Cape of Good Hope many travellers arrived in Table Bay, on their way to the East:some came voluntarily, others by force of circumstance.   They came ashore, looked around, observed strange, indigenous people, interesting plants and animals, they visited the little settlement, met the local personalities, wondered at the way-of-life. They also consulted and negotiated with the Dutch officials, and sought help in their difficulties.   And, most frequently, they recorded their impressions so as to inform and astonish their firneds in Europe with the wonders they had seen. These impressions were sometimes published; but more often they appeared in ships' log books and other mss, unpublished, and available to the researchers of today in archives and special liabraries only.   Such recorded impressions are the subject matter of this book: Major Raven-Hart has selected, transcribed and meticulously translated a total of 104 accounts by visitors to the Cape between 1652 and 1702. They are taken from the original Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Danish and German; with one exception, the list is exhaustive for this period.   The language styles are varied; quaint and vivid, penetrating, and sometimes quite coarse.   To accompany the transcribed texts, and to help the reader enjoy and understand, Major Raven-Hart has provided background and context notes to describe contemporary happenings in Europe, official records by the Cape commanders and governors and biographical notes on the writers.   In the index the reader will find references to animals, plants, persons, names, etc; a glossary of foreign words, definitions of various sea-faring and navigational terms and expressions; identifications of flora and fauna, bibliographies; and explanatory notes. This index is not just a valuable and practical working tool-it is virtually a concentrated commpanion-book or vade mecum for late 17th C history of the Cape.   A feature of this book are the illustrations: the author has been able to find 65 engravings, maps, title pages, portraits-most of which have been reproduced as full-or double-pages.

Eastern Cape Veld Flowers by Eily Gledhill 1981, 2nd edition, Published by the Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation of the Cape Provincial Administration, Cape Town Preface to the first edition and preface to the second edition by Eily Gledhill, 276 pages, 4 color plates. Fine line drawings by the author. There are 554 species from 125 families described. Hardcover in good condition, front and back covers are a bit stained, spine presents foxing. Owner's signature inside and his stamp on the title page. Pages clean, nice tight binding. ~ Highly collectable book. Eily Gledhill (1914-2007) described a number of new species and worked on a revision of the genus Albuca. She also published ‘The genus Dioscorea in the Cape Province west of East London' in 1967. Many of her numerous publications were illustrated by herself with accurate black- and-white drawings. Furthermore, her book published in 1969 and with a second edition in 1981, The Eastern Cape veld flowers, in which she describes 554 species from 125 families, each illustrated by her fine line drawings, is still of great value to students of botany and the public at large  In the preface she writes: ‘If this guide assists owners of land and visitors to know more about the plants of the eastern Cape, it will have achieved its object, for any one who becomes interested in this unique flora cannot fail to realise why it needs to be protected’. She coined the term bonte veld which has become recognized as a veld type and is widely used. Eily was honoured in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign head of the order, by her promotion to Dame of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Eily was a member of the British Ecological Society, the Royal Society of South Africa, the Botanical Society of South Africa, the Van Riebeeck Society and the South African Ornithological Society.   Please judge from pictures:       Please note: Payment must be made within three days of auction close.    Please have a look at all my Items here!!
