Paperback. English. Papermac. 1992. In good condition.A classic study of the beliefs and institutions of mankind, and the progress through magic and religion to scientific thought, The Golden Bough has a unique status in modern anthropology and literature. First published in 1890, The Golden Bough was eventually issued in a twelve-volume edition (1906-15) which was abridged in 1922 by the author and his wife. That abridgement has never been reconsidered for a modern audience. In it some of the more controversial passages were dropped, including Frazer's daring speculations on the Crucifixion of Christ. For the first time this one-volume edition restores Frazer's bolder theories and sets them within the framework of a valuable introduction and notes. A seminal work of modern anthropolgy, The Golden Bough also influenced many twentieth-century writers, including D H Lawrence, T S Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis. Its discussion of magical types, the sacrificial killing of kings, the dying god, and the scapegoat is given fresh pertinence in this new edition. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

From his natal family to about World War II -- the epilogue is about Hitler's attempt to make a gracious gesture by having Napoleon's son 's coffin moved to France. You will not hear much of politics or military except as impinges on the family -- especially in their marriages, and obtaining, or failing to obtain, posts, the intrigues when out of power, and all that. And such personal moments as when Napoleon III's son was born, his cousin and former heir refused to sign the birth certificate -- until their cousin Mathilde descend upon him in a dudgeon because she had been there twenty-seven hours and would not stay any longer, and therefore he was going to sign it.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days For three decades at the end of the twentieth century - throughout boxing's most engrossing era - James Lawton was ringside, covering every significant bout, spending time with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hitman Hearns, Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and many other great fighters. Lawton found himself captivated by the sport as he followed it around the world. From a big fight's initial announcement, through the fighters' punishing training regimes, the overblown press conferences and dramatic weigh-ins, up to the bout itself and its savage fall-out - Lawton observed and absorbed it all, grateful for the remarkable access he was afforded. He witnessed Ali screaming in pain for his dressing-room lights to be turned out after a fight; he was there to meet Tyson at the prison gates on his release in 1992; he listened as former champions wept while struggling to find their new place in the world. As part of a small, tight-knit group of sportswriters with the privilege of covering each fight in such intimate detail, Lawton formed lifelong friendships and found himself forever altered by being caught up in the whirlwind of a sport at its most spellbinding. A Ringside Affair brings that brilliant epoch back to life - and puts it in the perspective it deserves. It salutes the epic quality of boxing's last years of glory, retraces arguably the richest inheritance bequeathed to any sport, and speculates on the possibility that we will never see such fighting again. It is part celebration, part lament, but perhaps most of all it is a personal record of some of most enthralling and challenging days produced by the world's oldest sport. Features Summary For three decades at the end of the twentieth century - throughout boxing's most engrossing era - James Lawton was ringside, covering every significant bout... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In 2011 the world was shocked when the news broke that Joost van der Westhuizen, known for years as the golden boy of South African rugby and a former Springbok captain, had been diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND). This rare condition attacks the central nervous system, causing progressive disability. There is no known cure. All who have seen Joost in action will know that he is not one to give up without a fight. His game-changing prowess as a brilliant scrum half is now focused on a battle for survival and, more importantly, on making a difference to the lives of others with the disease. In a race against time, Joost has a dream to fulfil. He says: "In the beginning you go through all the emotions and you ask, 'Why me?' It's quite simple. 'Why not me?' If I have to go through this to help future generations, why not me?" His acceptance of his symptoms is equally pragmatic: "One day you can't move your arm, another day you don't have speech. Every day you are reborn and you take the day as it comes." Glory Game - The Joost van der Westhuizen Story is a compelling narrative of redemption set against the backdrop of an illustrious career in rugby. It is the story of a modern-day warrior forced to face his own human frailty. Joost shows us that beyond ambition, success and fame lies the true wealth of family and friends, and that within a ravaged body the spirit can remain invincible. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days 2016 marks the twentieth anniversary of Damon Hill's coronation as Formula One World Champion. For the first time ever he tells the story of his journey through the last golden era of the sport when he took on the greats including Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher and emerged victorious as World Champion in 1996, stepping out of the shadow of his legendary father Graham Hill. Away from the grid, Watching the Wheels: The Autobiography is an astonishingly candid account of what it was like to grow up as the son of one of the country's most famous racing drivers. It also tells the unflinching story of dealing with the grief and chaos that followed his father's tragically early death in an aircraft accident in 1975, when Damon was 15 years old. Formula One drivers have always been aware of their mortality, and the rush that comes with the danger of racing was as intoxicating for Hill as it had been for his father's generation, until he came face-to-face with catastrophe when his team-mate, Ayrton Senna, was killed in 1994. The swirling emotions that Hill was faced with in light of the death of Senna was a defining moment for his generation of drivers and for the first time ever Hill talks candidly about the impact that Senna had on his life, even as he watched his own son step into motor racing. Courageously honest, and hugely rewarding, Watching the Wheels is a return to the last golden era of F1 racing, whose image still burns ferociously for those who love the sport for what it reveals about human skill in the face or near certain death. What is this place that has given rise to countless metaphors but can still quicken the imagination? For Bill Barich, the question became a quest when he realized that home was no longer New York, where he had grown up, but California, to which he had been lured twenty years earlier. Now, in this account of his journey through California, he captures the true nature of the state behind the stereotypes. From the fogbound fishing towns of the North to the Mexican port of entry at San Ysidro, Barich describes an amazing diversity among people who have staked a claim to California's promise. He introduces us to a Native American hairdresser and the head priest of a Sikh temple; we meet loggers, bikers, an aging lifeguard, and the prison warden whose job is to keep Charles Manson behind bars. He follows the traces of John Muir, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walt Disney, and Ronald Reagan, and weighs the impact their dreams have had on the rest of us. The result is a book that captures all the promise, heartache, grandeur, and incongruity of California and its unabashed Big Dreams. Perfect for fans of Lauren Oliver and E. Lockhart. When Nico Morris's older sister mysteriously disappears, her parents, family, and friends are devastated. But Nico can never admit what she herself feels: relief at finally being free of Sarah's daily cruelties. Then the best and worst thing happens: four years later, after dozens of false leads, Sarah is found. But this girl is much changed from the one Nico knew. She's thin and drawn, when Sarah had been golden and athletic; timid and unsure, instead of brash and competitive; and strangest of all, sweet and kind, when she had once been mean and abusive. Sarah's retrograde amnesia has caused her to forget almost everything about her life, from small things like the plots of her favorite books and her tennis game to the more critical-where she's been the last four years and what happened at the park on the fateful day she vanished. Despite the happy ending, the dark details of that day continue to haunt Nico, and it becomes clear that more than one person knows the true story of what happened to Sarah... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of The Who from their golden era with the ultimate line-up of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon. Indeed, all the concert photos within come from the band's last two years of gigs with the inimitable Keith Moon and are from the archive of former Record Mirror photographer Steve Emberton. With the exception of a handful they have all been scanned from the original negatives, specifically for this book and have never been published before. Having spent most of '74 away from the stage whilst working on the film Tommy, the band returned to touring in October '75 in support of their then latest album, The Who By Numbers that also spawned the hit single 'Squeeze Box'. The eleven UK concerts culminated with three shows at Wembley's Empire Pool and Steve Emberton was there at two of them. The following year the band continued to tour in promotion of The Who By Numbers, albeit mainly in America. However they performed three UK concerts in early summer - all outdoor events at football grounds. The first in London at Charlton Athletic's The Valley, went down in Who history as it resulted in the band being declared the loudest in the world as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. This was followed by a gig at Celtic Park in Glasgow. Steve Emberton was there again for the third and final gig at The Vetch Field in Swansea. It would prove to be the last paid gig the band performed to a UK audience with Keith Moon in the band and Steve captured it. In addition to this Steve also took photos of both Keith Moon and John Entwistle outside of the gig environment and this collection includes candid photos of the Who's rhythm section in more relaxed settings with the ones of Entwistle taken in West London in November '76 and with his father in August '77 at Ramport Studios. The Keith Moon shots were taken in October or November '77 at Chrysalis Records. Completing the book is a foreword by Tony Klinger, author of the Who tome, Twilight Of The Gods and co-producer of The Kids Are Alright film. Features Summary Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of the original Who by Record Mirror's Steve Emberton. There are horrific enemies such as Amangons and the hideous Fir Bolg. And stalwart companions in the shape of the four Eldest: the shape-shifting Salmon, Stag, Eagle and Blackbird. And there is Mabon, the shining golden boy-god, whom Arthur and his companions must rescue from an underground dungeon which quenches his powers. London lawyer Gabriel John Utterson is persuaded to investigate the sinister activities of the dastardly Mr Edward Hyde. He becomes convinced that Hyde is blackmailing his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and that a master criminal is at work. To his horror, Utterson discovers that the doctor's own researches into the duality of human nature have unleashed a murderous sociopath and set in motion a deadly chain of events that threatens to overwhelm him. Published in January 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's crime fantasy was an immediate success, inspiring more than 100 stage and film adaptations and becoming one of the best-known stories ever written. It was reissued in the Detective Story Club in 1929 for being 'without equal in the realm of detective fiction'. This Detective Story Club classic is introduced by supernatural and detective fiction researcher Richard Dalby. It includes Stevenson's macabre tales 'Markheim' and 'The Body Snatcher', plus two of the earliest published Jekyll and Hyde parodies - the detective story 'Dr Jekyl' by Robert McLaughlin (1931) and a bizarre 'Untold Sequel' by Francis Little (1890). "The Detective Story Club", launched by Collins in 1929, was a clearing house for the best and most ingenious crime stories of the age, chosen by a select committee of experts. Now, almost 90 years later, these books are the classics of the Golden Age, republished at last with the same popular cover designs that appealed to their original readers.
