TIF 2002 may finish higher up the video-game league this season though, as it's the first of the big Xmas football games to be released and soccer-loving PS2 owners in desperate need of a fix will seize gratefully on the first decent representation of the beautiful game this year. In gameplay terms not much has changed since the last version; This is Football is still a fast-flowing, end-to-end arcade romp rather than a considered simulation, though there are hidden strategic depths to discover as you negotiate the four difficulty settings. Strategies and goal scoring moves learnt from TIF 1 & 2 still work--the sprint down the touchline followed by an in-swinging cross to the far post usually results in a goal (provided you have a half-way decent striker). The new TIF also offers real player names (no Michael Orin nonsense) and likenesses--though this becomes less accurate as you descend down the leagues (yes, this time you can play as Port Vale!) and the players become more obscure. There are a limited number of stadia offered, but these too are lovingly realised. In fact, on the eye-candy front, TIF will be hard to beat this year. As with all elements of the game, it's introduced by an excellent tutorial, and even novice players will have little trouble finding their feet. Bombing Run adds a new team element, with the aim of getting the ball through the opposition goal. Think a first-person version of Speedball and you're there. The gameplay in Unreal Tournament 2003 is far more tactical than you'd first think, although not to the detriment of those looking for a simple blast. But particularly in multiplayer mode--undoubtedly the highlight of a superb set of games--you need to think quite hard about your actions, whatever mode you're playing. It really can make the difference. In some ways, the game hasn't evolved from its predecessor. Undoubtedly it's slicker, looks better and is more polished, yet the core of the action is still very similar. Yet it's such pure, engrossing entertainment you'd be hard pushed to grumble. In all, Unreal Tournament 2003 is an accomplished and successful marriage of the original with some very welcome new ideas. Your main goal in town though is to find yourself a sweetheart and woo her enough so that shell agree to marry you. As fun as all this is though its exactly how the Harvest Moon games have worked since the original SNES game and this version takes almost no advantage of the DS. The touch screen is used merely as an inventory and as a means to pet your animals - other than that its almost entirely superfluous. Even worse, the graphics seem identical to a GBA game and not even a particularly good one at that, with some very poor animation. There are a few new features, such as a mini-casino run by the harvest sprites, but its not nearly enough to tempt you if you have one of the more recent GBA versions. The touch screen is used merely as an inventory and as a means to pet your animals - other than that its almost entirely superfluous. Even worse, the graphics seem identical to a GBA game and not even a particularly good one at that, with some very poor animation. There are a few new features, such as a mini-casino run by the harvest sprites, but its not nearly enough to tempt you if you have one of the more recent GBA versions. The goal is to steer Buzz through each level before time runs out and eventually save Woody from the Prospector. Buzz has some nice moves- he can jump, duck, ride Bullseye the horse and can even fly. In order to win each level, you need to find hidden gold coins, switches and hidden routes. Too many zaps from a bad toy can drain Buzz's batteries and send you back to the start. All in all, this is a fun game, but might be too hard for many of the younger children likely to be interested in the Toy Story theme. Instead of being captured, this time the strangely limbless Rayman has to sneak his way into a rabbid headquarters near a shopping centre as the demonic rabbit creatures plan an invasion of Earth (or wherever it is that Rayman actually lives). Raymans disguises, and those of the rabbids themselves, can all be customised but involve a huge range of movie and video game parodies, from Naruto and Star Wars to Super Mario and Transformers. The actual mini-games are similarly eager to poke fun at anything and everything they can think of including a Guitar Hero spoof, twisted versions of traditional baseball and football sims and even a mini-game set in Ubisofts own offices which tasks you with the arduous goal of not getting any work done. There are 60 mini-games in total, with the rhythm action stages making a comeback, in revamped form, alongside the popular first person shoot em-up levels. In fact theres overall a much greater emphasis now on multiplayer games - one of the weak spots of the original.
