For example, some of the buildings show great detail, while in another area it can be difficult to tell whether you're facing a cliff or a thorny plant. Also, while Donald is superbly animated, the game's many textures look grainy compared to those of other PS2 titles. The sound, on the other hand, is spot on. The sound effects are pleasantly cartoonlike, even though the voices are annoying, especially Donald's. Experienced gamers will blow through this one, assuming they want to, but younger gamers will find the game sufficiently challenging and fun. While the brilliantly designed monsters are indeed scary, it's the complex twists and turns of the plot that really produce the game's terror. Gameplay is largely puzzle-based. Much of it involves gathering clues and items to solve each puzzle. There are a few fights thrown in, but these are quite easy, and mostly used to show off the developers' bizarre creations. The level of both puzzles and fighting can be adjusted to match each player's skill level. Although its mechanics are rudimentary, the game's presentation is anything but. A heavy use of fog is the game's hallmark effect, greatly adding to the mood. Sound--both effects and music--alternates between eerie silence and sudden, shocking crescendos. Although the graphics and sound are both top-notch they aren't massively different from the PS2 version, in fact none of the game has really evolved from the PS2 version except for the addition of a new playable mission. Although it is comparatively short you do get to play as a new character: deranged, confusing psycho-chick Maria, whom you encounter throughout the game as James. The real star of this game is the story. It's very rich and intricate--a sharp contrast to the banal scenarios that frame most games. The game is short, but you'll want to give it another go to discover its multiple endings and secret items. The first game was a very decent pastiche of Metal Gear Solid, but subsequent sequels seemed to become increasingly less so, to the point where this fourth title is really make or break for the series. The Omega Strain 's big new feature, as with many sequels nowadays, is that the game is now playable online, and rather than being an afterthought or grossly simplified version of the single player mode there's actually an impressive attempt to put the whole game online, where it's playable by up to four people at a time. The only problem is that because the online and offline modes are so similar this actually means that if you know what you're doing, and particularly if you've got microphone headsets to co-ordinate yourselves with, it all becomes rather easy--a fact that a rather intrusive time limit cannot really balance out. But the problem with the online mode isn't really that it's too easy but that the basic gameplay of the single player mode just doesn't cut the mustard anymore. Considering the advances made in Metal Gear Solid 3, the Syphon Filter franchise just seems to be treading water and the rather weak graphics, stodgy controls and generally uninspired level design are rather more typical of Syphon Filter 2 and 3 than the original.
