Call of Duty 2: Big Red One should certainly be the last word on the current console formats though--which means something at least. Rather confusingly this has nothing to do with the subtitle-less Call of Duty 2 on PC and Xbox 360. Whereas that game has the usual mix of three different nationalities of soldier to control, Big Red One has you playing the same soldier throughout the whole game. You do get to do quite a bit of sight seeing though with missions in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. The Big Red One of the title is the nickname of a famous American infantry division and by sticking with them throughout the whole game you do get a much better sense of camaraderie than previous Call of Duty games. Unfortunately it also means that the game seems perilously close to the already excellent Brothers in Arms, except without the strategy bits. No war game ever seems to do its action quite like Call of Duty though and the set pieces here tread that difficult line between cinematic bombast and harrowing realism perfectly. Thankfully, the jaw-dropping graphics are matched up to a very playable shoot 'em-up that works as a slightly more in-depth version of the PS2's Starfighter, except without any of that Episode I nonsense; instead it recreates everything from the Death Star trench run to the Battle of Hoth. The game is actually a sequel to Rogue Squadron on the N64--an excellent game that many only remember from the rather lacklustre PC version. It's structurally very similar to the original, with a dozen or so levels and a Star Destroyer full of secret levels and ships. There are a few new ideas, such as controllable wingman and ground troops, and some of the levels are set in deep space instead of just planetside, but at its heart this is still Rogue Squadron Deluxe. What elevates the game to an object of worship is the graphics--they really do look almost identical to the movies, with several scenes being copied exactly, and move with a fluidity and grace you wouldn't have thought possible from a ￂﾣ150 console. The only flaw is that the missions are needlessly short, but there's plenty of replayability, and by gosh there's those graphics...-- David Jenkins

Title: F - Zero GX Region: PAL Platform: Nintendo Gamecube Condition: Like new F-Zero GX is the fastest racing game ever made--no question about it. As the original futuristic racing game it's also one of the most imaginative and fun to boot. For those who don't know, it's a racing game set in the far future--the original F-Zero on the SNES was the original inspiration for Wipeout, but now that Sony's future racing series seems to have run out of steam the stage is set for Nintendo's baby (now developed by Sega) to reclaim its crown. Instead of boring flat courses you get to zoom around enormous rollercoaster-like tracks, constantly defying gravity and moving at speeds that make any other racer seem static. There are also up to 30 other "cars" on the track at the same time, which makes for an even more unusual and exciting race--especially when you realise you can knock them off to their flaming death at any time. Another new aspect in the game is the degree to which you can customise your vehicle. You can edit or build from scratch your own car using parts you buy at the in-game shop, then add existing logos or ones you paint yourself to create your own personal speedmobile. Despite all these original features the one thing F-Zero games have never had is very good graphics, but that's all changed now--GX features some quite stunning backdrops that make the impression of speed and height even more realistic than ever. Add in the four-player mode and this could even rob Mario Kart of its crown for the best next-gen racer around.
