Good condition for its age, wear to jacket, illustrated and   signed by author, who later emigrated to South Africa and wrote for The Star newspaper. Tracked postage is R60.00.

You can't go about the country falling in love with girls at your age,' Dr Gordon's friend Grimsdyke tells him.  'You're not an impoverished medical student any more.  The predatory misses will expect you to marry them.'  But Gordon soon discovers that a busy general practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope.  As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don't like you messing about with their wives unless you've got one of your own at home.'  And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the NHS records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and protect him from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up.  She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of falling for the same nurse as their doctor.  He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty much everything else in their married life to come.  Despite relatives and real estate, solicitors and salesmen, bridesmaids and builders, and the doubtful though undoubted assistance of his friends, Dr Gordon finally marries the girl - but only just. Like many newly-qualified doctors, Richard Gordon is determined to be a great surgeon, and starts off in the lowly post of Junior Assistant to the Casualty Officer at St Swithins.  Unfortunately, a number of faux pas lose him promotion in favour of his spotty and sycophantic colleague Dr Bingham.  Gordon then gets into the hands of a medical employment agency and finds himself in practice in the Midlands.  'Don't worry about the doctor you're going to work with,' his friend Grimsdyke advises beforehand.  'Find out what his wife is like - they're the trouble.'  Doctor Gordon is to make use of this advice within twelve hours of arrival.  After an interlude in the fashionable practice of an amorous London doctor, Gordon again finds himself admitted as Resident House Surgeon at St Swithin's.  There his rivalry with Bingham starts again, but this time it's over a more serious matter than science or surgery - the hand of the prettiest night nurse in the hospital is at stake. If it's worth making by Sir Richard Attenborough, it's usually well worth seeing – and this delightful love story, told almost as a mystery tale and spanning a period of more than fifty years – is no exception.
