Landmarked, Land Claims & Land Restitution in South Africa By Cherryl Walker Soft cover in very good condition The year 2008 is the deadline set by President Mbeki for the finalization of all land claims by people who were dispossessed under the apartheid and previous white governments. Although most experts agree this is an impossible deadline, it does provide a significant political moment for reflection on the ANC government’s program of land restitution since the end of apartheid. Land reform (and land restitution within that) remains a highly charged issue in South Africa, one that deserves more in–depth analysis. Drawing on her experience as Rural Land Claims Commissioner in KwaZulu–Natal from 1995 to 2000, Professor Cherryl Walker provides a multilayered account of land reform in South Africa, one that covers general critical commentary, detailed case material, and personal narrative. She explores the master narrative of loss and restoration, which has been fundamental in shaping the restitution program; offers a critical overview of the achievements of the program as a whole; and discusses what she calls the “non–programmatic limits to land reform,” including urbanization, environmental constraints and the impact of HIV/AIDS. Cherryl Walker is a professor and the head of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Stellenbosch. She was the Regional Land Claims Commissioner in KwaZulu–Natal from 1995 to 2000. She is the author of Women and Resistance in South Africa.

Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa - Nicki von der Heyde - Struik - 2014 - Paperback in good condition. There are two major types of battlefield terrain in South Africa: first the open plains and savannah lands of the Highveld, a land where cavalry rules supreme. The second type is the thornbush of the Eastern Cape, a setting more suited to skirmishing rather than set-piece battles. Then, in KwaZulu-Natal, the two terrains merge to create the country s most dramatic battlefield landscape and one of the largest military graveyards in the world where the fates of colonies, republics and kingdoms were decided. For more than two centuries, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, conflict, in one form or another, swept across this countryside; its combatants as diverse, hardy and tenacious as the land and its resources that almost always was at the root of hostilities. In this groundbreaking book, author and specialist battlefields guide, Nicki von der Heyde, presents over 70 battles and skirmishes covering five wars that shaped the course of South African history from the Frontier Wars that started in 1779 to the Second-Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902, a bitter and costly confrontation triggered by the discovery of the world s richest gold fields on the Witwatersrand.Detailed accounts of the engagements, based on extensive research, are provided, with special attention given to the terrain, key phases and outcomes, and the combatants involved. Battle timelines succinctly set out the passage of each campaign, while international timelines catalogue concurrent events around the world.More than 400 original documentary and contemporary photographs and over 60 short features have been assembled to provide a rich, enthralling and haunting account of these momentous events. Detailed historical maps that include annotations have been created for 16 high-profile engagements, while 10 regional maps indicate the locations of the battle sites. Arranged in regional order, with concise directions to each battle site and GPS coordinates for main locations, the "Field Guide to South Africa s Battlefields" is not only indispensable for professional and amateur military historians, but is of great interest to general readers, too if only as a reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the value of exploring the past to make sense of the present. It is beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and detailed battle and regional maps."

Title: The Missing Piece | Kevin Lings Subtitle: Solving South Africa's Economic Puzzle Author: Kevin Lings Publisher: Pan MacMillan (2014) ISBN-10: 1770103767 ISBN-13: 9781770103764 Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 225 Dimensions: 23.4 x 15.3 x 2 cm +++ by Kevin Lings +++ At the time of South Africa's first democratic election in 1994 everyone agreed that poverty had to be uprooted, inequality reduced and the conditions for sustainable economic growth established. It was clear that the structure of the economy had to change and that land ownership, employment opportunities and access to essential services had to more closely match the needs of the entire population. Unfortunately, there was very little fundamental agreement about how this should be done. The Missing Pieces: Solving South Africa's Economic Puzzle looks at various aspects of our economy over the past 20 years in an accessible way - what has worked and what has fallen short - and looks into the next 20 years - what needs to be done in order to grow and sustain our economy - through focusing on the agricultural sector, redressing education policies and addressing our infrastructural backlog.

Struik Publishers (Pty) Ltd, South Africa, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: Good+. Reprint. 228 x 152 mm. Language: English. 294 pp. Democracy in South Africa turned 20 on 27 April 2014. In A Rumour of Spring, Max du Preez investigates and analyses the progress and lack of progress the country has made during that time. He considers the state of the ANC and the opposition, social cohesion and race, the media, the judiciary, civil society, the economy, poverty and unemployment, land, education, health, and South Africa s standing in the world. An honest and balanced account, the book tackles the questions asked by ordinary South Africans every day: How are we really doing? What is really going on in our country? How should we understand what is happening here? Highly readable, accessible and entertaining written in the style that has made Max du Preez so popular. It takes a balanced approach, looking at the good, the bad and the ugly, and explores South Africa on several levels, from the leaders in government to ordinary people on the ground.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days The comeback of chieftaincy, custom and culture is one of the most surprising features of post-apartheid South Africa. As democracy dawned, support for traditional leaders rose not only in national politics, but also in the villages of rural South Africa. Chiefs were no longer considered relics of the past or puppets of the apartheid regime; instead they were heralded as key figures in the upcoming African Renaissance. Sekhukhune in the northern part of South Africa had a tradition of resistance. The author has used the example of this chieftaincy to consider much wider questions - what was the relation between the formal legal and political recognition of chieftaincy and its local insurgence? How are the local, national and global interlinked in the creation of custom? Why did the liberal ANC allow the chiefs to retain power over land, local government and custom? What does this teach us about politics in present-day Africa? Features Summary The comeback of chieftaincy, custom and culture is one of the most surprising features of post-apartheid South Africa. As democracy dawned, support for traditional leaders rose not only in national politics...
