The badge is derived from that of its original parent formation, 7th Armoured Division. The design was changed in significant details and comprised a white circular background, with red border, enclosing the rat. The rat appears as green, brown or grey, some perhaps being originally green that suffered degradation through wear. The green rat seems to have been the intended colour and was adopted as a reminder of the unit's service in the Burma jungle and was known as the 'jungle rat'. This badge was adopted some time after the Brigade returned from Burma at the end of 1942 and was definitely in use when the Brigade went to Italy in May 1944. On the outbreak of war in 1939 the Brigade was a Regular Army formation in Egypt with the title of Light Armoured Brigade (Egypt). It was redesignated on 16 February 1940 as 7th Light Armoured Brigade, and was further re-titled on 16 April 1940 as 7th Armoured Brigade. It became an Armoured Brigade Group on 1 March 1942, reverting to an armoured brigade on 4 June 1943. On 1 May 1945 it was redesignated and reorganized as an armoured brigade Type B, that is without an infantry component and outside a divisional organization. The formation was initially under command of British Troops Egypt but joined the Mobile (later 7th Armoured) Division in December 1939. It fought with 7th Armoured until November 1941 when it was withdrawn and at the beginning of 1942 was  sent to Burma where it arrived at Rangoon on 21 February, with just two regiments under command, 7 Hussars and 2RTR. The Brigade fought in the retreat from Burma and went to India at the end of May 1942. At the beginning of October 1942 the Brigade was sent to join 'Paiforce' to deal with the unrest in Iraq and Syria. It was withdrawn to Egypt at the end of September 1943. The Brigade deployed to Italy at the beginning of May 1944 where it fought throughout the campaign to the final thrust through the Po Valley. At the conclusion of hostilities it formed part of the occupation forces in Austria. The sixteen-year-long war in Mozambique between the Frelimo government and Renamo rebels remains one of the most overlooked and misunderstood of the conflicts that raged across Africa during the height of the Cold War. While usually viewed as mere sideshow to more high-profile wars in Angola, Rhodesia and within apartheid South Africa itself, it nonetheless is noteworthy in its complexity, duration and destructiveness. Before it was all over in 1992 at least one million Mozambicans would be dead, millions more homeless and the country lying in ruins. Ultimately Frelimo would get its victory not on the battlefield but rather at the polling booth in 1994. Based on more than a decade of meticulous research, a review of thousands of pages of military records and documents, and dozens of in-depth interviews with political leaders, diplomats, generals, and soldiers and sailors, this book tells the story of the war from the perspective of those who fought it and lived it. It follows Renamo's growth from its Rhodesian roots in 1977 as a weapon against Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwean nationalist guerrillas operating from Mozambique through South African patronage in the early 1980s to Renamo's evolution as a self-sufficient nationalist insurgency. In tracing the ebb and flow of the conflict from the rugged mountains and Savannah forests of central Mozambique across the hot, humid Zambezi River valley and down to the very outskirts of the Mozambican capital in the far south, it examines the operational strategy of Frelimo and Renamo commanders in the field, the battles they fought and the lives of their troops. In doing so it highlights personal struggles, each side's successes and failures, and the missed opportunities to decisively turn the tide of war. Accordingly, this book provides the first real comprehensive military history of a war too long neglected and under appreciated in the chronicles of modern African history. PAPERBACK: 288 PAGES WITH 60 B/W ILLUSTRATIONS & 10 MAPS

Short Description Marto Mini Sword Roman. Silver detailed handle with mirror polished blade. Description Julius Caesar, Caius Julious Caesar (101 b.C. - 44 b.C.) was the greatest soldier and political leader of ancient Roma. During his lifetime the frontiers of the empire were pushed forward and secured, Rome was transformed from a republic into a government with a single ruler, and Caesar was it's first dictator. He wrote some of the finest works of history in Latin, describing the campaigns he fought in Caul and the Civil Wars, he was an architect, a mathematician, and one of the ancient's world orators. There is no doubt that Caesar was ambitious and that he enjoyed the great power placed in his hands. It is said that he wished to be crowned king. This was the reason that the conspirators led by Cassius and Brutus gave for his murder: Caesar has become too powerful and danger for the survival of the Republic. Smallish stain on  bottom edge. The book itself is in very good condition. B&W illustrations throughout. Binding: Softcover Pages: 152 Dimensions: 25.2 x 18.6 x 2 cm +++ by Al J. Venter +++ The Terror Fighters is an early account of guerrilla warfare in Africa that concentrates on the war in Angola between the Portuguese and the local liberation movements.  It also provides a contrast between the Portuguese experience in Africa and the American experience in Vietnam, which was being fought at the same time. This is a fascinating book that looks at an aspect of warfare in Africa that was overshadowed by later conflicts in the same region.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge.   1992 1st Edition 303pp Hardcover with B&W photos Book Very Good, DJ Very Good some very minor shelfwear, contents very clean and crisp, tightly bound. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms. Photos.

Join 'The Terrible Ones' on clandestine operations and in conventional warfare during the harsh bush war that raged through southern Angola in the 1980's. The conflict ended with the last major battle of the Cold War, one of the largest land battles of the latter part of the 20th century. This book presents an eyewitness account by a South African Defense Force (SADF) Signals Officer, Marius Scheepers, who served in arguably the most formidable battle unit that ever existed in the history of the South African Defense Force: 32 Battalion. It describes how members lived and fought in the bush during 1983 under the most difficult conditions. Being the Signals Officer of 32 Battalion, Scheepers was privy to all major command decisions of the time. Although he focuses primarily on operations during the year 1983, including Operations Snoek and Dolfyn, he includes concise descriptions of all other major operations that took place inside Angola between 1966 and 1988, including Operation Askari (1983/84) and the decisive battle at Cuito Cuanavale in 1987/88. Extensive appendices include 32 Battalion sitreps, radio-code cards, SADF radio equipment used by 32 Battalion and details on SADF, SAAF and SWAPO. PAPERBACK: 184 PAGES WITH 100 B/W PHOTOS & MAPS Published May 2012

At last! The history of the Rhodesian Light Infantry. Weve seen the stories of the more glamorous Selous Scouts, the SAS and the Rhodesian Air Force, but very little about the RLI, often underrated, but arguably one of the most effective counter-insurgency units of all time. This was the unit that brought the Fireforce concept to the worlds attention - the devastatingly ruthless airborne envelopment and annihilation of a guerrilla enemy. Dubbed The Killing Machine by Charles D. Melson, chief historian of the US Marine Corps, the RLI was a veritable foreign legion with over 20 diverse nationalities serving in her ranks. The RLI, a truly international airborne battalion, comprising of over 20 nationalities, fought the bitter Zimbabwean bush war for 15 years against the overwhelming tide of communist-trained guerrillas. Kill rates dont win wars, but during its brief 19-year history, it is estimated that the RLI accounted for between 12,000 and 15,000 enemy guerrillas, for the loss of 135 men. RLI soldiers were recipients of four Silver Crosses and 42 Bronze Crosses of Rhodesia. An RLI trooper holds the world record for operational parachute descents - a staggering 73 op jumps - most under 500 feet! A glossy coffee-table, pictorial format with hundreds of colour photos, maps, rolls, honours and awards. It is not intended as a definitive history but, with more of a classic scrapbook feel, the presentation attempts to capture the essence of this fine unit - what it was like to be a troopie, one of the ouens. We have accessed a host of unique, previously unpublished photos and illustrative material and many former RLI members have embraced the project, generously contributing photos, memorabilia and anecdotes. Ian Smith has written his tribute in the front and the foreword is by the last CO, Lieutenant-Colonel Charlie Aust. PAPERBACK: 544 PAGES WITH  1,800 b/w illustrations & maps.  Published June 2007

Air Aces - Christopher Shores - Hardcover Description from the book flap: An Ace is generally accepted as a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft. Since the beginning of air fighting each war and campaign has produced its air aces. This book not only describes the fighting careers of the famous fighter pilots, but places their achievements in the context of the conditions under which they fought. For example, the 352 victories of the Luftwaffe ace Erich Hartmann could only have been gained over the Russian Front in World War II. This exhaustively researched book contains a wealth of information on the air aces of modern warfare. Tables give statistics on all wars since 1914, including lesser known ones like the Russian Civil War and the Indo-Pakistan conflicts. Individual biographies are included on the greatest aces - Lufberry, Gabreski, Galland and Bong to name but a few. More than 250 color and B&W photographs. Condition: Acceptable
