Hardcover with protected DJ. University of Natal Press and Killie Campbell Africana Library Durban pages inc index. Edited by Ruth Edgecombe. DJ has a couple of minor nicks to edges and some grubby marks but is now protected. Slight foxing but generally the book is in good condition with no inscriptions. (see pics below). Please feel free to ask questions.   " The rarity and interest of Bishop Colenso's First Steps of the Zulu Mission made it an obvious choice for inclusion in this Reprint Series. Colenso's fresh and perceptive observations of the Zulu kingdom and his lively day-by-day account of his journey make this a rich historical source. Different perspectives on this journey are provided in 'Three native accounts of the visit of the Bishop of Natal in September and October to Umpande, King of the Zulus', which were written by three young Zulu converts who accompanied him. Also included in this volume are some of the lesser-known and less easily accessible missionary publications of Colenso. Together with 'First Steps' they constitute a comprehensive statement of the essential ideas and beliefs that shaped the first eleven years of his life as a missionary after his consecration as first Bishop of Natal in . The usefulness of this material extends beyond the interests of the student of missionary endeavour. For here there is vital information on the early history of the Zulu kingdom under Mpande. For the historian of ideas, fascinating light is cast on the interaction of intellectual currents emanating from England, and ideas and attitudes shaped in a colonial and a traditional context. In a sense Colenso operated simultaneously in three kinds of environment: as thinker in the intellectual world of England, as Bishop in the colony of Natal and as missionary confronting the traditional world of the Zulu."   Please look at my other book listings as I am happy to combine postage should you wish to purchase more than one item. 10% discount will be given for orders of 5 or more books packaged and posted together. Condition: Good. Maya Angelou's seven volumes of autobiography are a testament to the talents and resilience of this extraordinary writer. Loving the world, she also knows its cruelty. As a black woman she has known discrimination and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement and celebration. The fourth volume of her enthralling autobiography finds Maya Angelou immersed in the world of black writers and artists in Harlem, working in the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King. Maya Angelou has... achieved a kind of literary breakthrough which few writers of any time, place, or race achieve.... What makes [her] writing unique is... a melding of unconcerned honesty, consummate craft, and perfect descriptive pitch, yielding a rare compound of great emotional force and authenticity. -The Washington Post Book World To say that Angelou is a living legend is in no way an exaggeration. [She is] one of the great voices of contemporary literature. -The Voice Angelou is one of the geniuses of the Afro-American serial autobiography. -The New York Times About the author () Maya Angelou - Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson on April in Saint Louis, Missouri. She attended public school in Stamps, Arkansas and San Francisco, California. She is perhaps best known for her semi-autobiographical work "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", and for the tireless effort she puts forth to make the world aware. In her youth, Angelou traveled the world, eventually marrying a South African freedom fighter and settling in Cairo, where she edited The Arab Observer, the only English language weekly newspaper in the Middle East. They later moved to Ghana where she was Features Editor of The African Review and taught at the University of Ghana. In the 60's, Dr, Martin Luther King requested that Angelou return to the US to become the northern coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She was later appointed to the Bicentennial Commission by President Ford and to the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year by President Carter. "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Die" was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in . Ten years later, in , Angelou was appointed to the lifetime position of Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. Angelou became only the second poet in United States history to write and recite an original poem at a Presidential Inauguration; in she read "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Clinton's Inauguration Ceremony. In , Angelou received an amazing amount of honors. Her semi-autobiographical tale, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", which was originally published in , became the longest running nonfiction best seller by an African American on the New York Times Bestsellers List. That same year, "A Brave and Startling Truth" was recited at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the United Nations, and "From a Black Woman to a Black Man" was recited at the Million Man March in Washington D. C.. Angelou is best known, however, for the five books of her autobiography, beginning with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (), which she adapted for television, through "All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes" (). Angelou's collection of essays entitled "Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now" was published in . She has assumed the roles of poet, educator, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director. Angelou had also appeared in the movie "Roots" and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in for her role in the movie. She also had a role in the movie, "How to Make an American Quilt" and wrote and produced "Afro-Americans in the Arts", a PBS special for which she received a Golden Eagle Award. She is the author of 11 best selling books. Her title Mom and Me and Mom made The New York Times Best Seller List in .

These are not your ordinary Telescopic Ladders. These are the original bit much impoved Telescopic Ladders. They have much more strength due to the triangular side members - instead of round like all the others and don't have as much play when extended. They don't flop about when moved back and forth and don't deflect when leaned against the wall or when climbing. Fits in the smallest of boots and yet extends to 3. 8 m. Has pads to protect the wall at the top and much better feet than you find on most other brands. I was selling them for R 5500 Have reduced to R 4500.00. Top Qulity  Para Cord Parachute cord 28Meter  (ParaCord 28m) - OD Green   Parachute Cord. BL nylon construction. Ideal for camping, boating, crabbing, indoor and outdoor clotheslines, halyard lines, garden lines, venetian blinds, awning lines and many applications requiring strength and durability.                    Condition: New Parachute cord (also paracord ) is a lightweight nylon kernmantle rope originally used in the suspension lines of US parachutes during World War II. Once in the field, paratroopers found this cord useful for many other tasks. It is now used as a general purpose utility cord by both military personnel and civilians. This versatile cord was even used by astronauts during STS-82, the second Space Shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. The braided sheath has a high number of interwoven strands for its size, giving it a relatively smooth texture.  The all-nylon construction makes paracord fairly elastic; depending on the application this can be either an asset or a liability. Military usage Despite the historic association of pararopes with Airborne units, virtually all US units have access to the cord. It is used in almost any situation where light cordage is needed. Typical uses include attaching equipment to harnesses, as dummy cords to avoid losing small or important items, tying rucksacks to vehicle racks, securing camouflage nets to trees or vehicles, and so forth. When threaded with beads, paracord may be used as a pace counter to estimate ground covered by foot. The yarns of the core (commonly referred to as "the guts") can also be removed when finer string is needed, for instance as sewing thread to repair gear or fishing line in a survival situation. The nylon sheath is often used alone, the yarn in the core removed, when a thinner or less elastic cord is needed. Ends of the cord are almost always melted and crimped to prevent fraying. In addition to purely utility functions, paracord can be used to fashion knotted or braided bracelets, lanyards,  belts, and other decorative items.

2009. Soft cover, 330 pages. Very good condition; like new. Under 1kg The remarkable true story of the Queen Alexandra frontline nurses in the Second World War.   The amazing experiences of the Queen Alexandra nurses in the Second World War form one of the greatest adventure stories of modern times, and - incredibly - remain largely untold. Thousands of middle-class girls, barely out of school, were plucked from sheltered backgrounds, subjected to training regimes unimaginably tough by today's standards, and sent forth to share the harsh conditions of the fighting services. They had to deal with the most appalling suffering, yet most found reserves of inner strength that carried them through episodes of unrelieved horror.   Over 200 nurses died, torpedoed in hospital ships, bombed in field hospitals or murdered in Japanese prison camps. Dozens won medals for gallantry. From the beaches of Dunkirk, to Singapore and D-Day, they saw it all. Whether tending burned pilots from the Battle of Britain or improvising medical treatment in Japanese death camps, their dedication was second to none. This is their story.
