As you'd expect from an official FIAA licence, all of the teams and drivers are represented, as are the 16 circuits which make up the World Championship circus--and they look fabulous. Presentation is king here and graphically there's plenty of eye candy to keep everyone entertained. Lush pre-rendered intro sequences rub shoulders with pre-race presentations complemented by introductory commentary that manages to be informative without being over the top. Formula One 2002 contains two race modes, Arcade and Simulation. The Arcade mode is more a game of bumper cars than a serious racing game, though you do get full in-race commentary from the king o' the track Murray Walker; while he does lighten the mood on occasion--"He's off the track and into the kitty litter!"--his repetitive comments will soon have you reaching for the "commentator off" button. In Simulation mode things get more realistic, but it has to be said that the experience still has an arcade-y feel to it. Even on a semi-pro setting it's not difficult to keep up with the pack down the back straights of Monza and the steering is viciously sharp at times, giving a rather detached feeling rather than an immersive one. That said, Formula One 2002 is more instantly playable than EA's F1 2002 (don't get confused by the titles, now) even though it lacks the fanatical level of tweaking EA include in their title. -- Chris Russell

The turn-based gameplay has you recruiting mercenary heroes, whom you then guide about an overhead map jam-packed with resources, treasure, magical artefacts, mysterious landmarks, monsters and more. Your heroes gain experience, skills and spells, and you put them in command of the largest armies that you can afford in an ultimate effort to defeat the enemy mercenaries looking to conquer you first. Half the game is spent exploring and building, and the other half is spent in battle. The overhead map switches to a side view when you engage in combat, at which point you must command your various creatures against their enemies, taking turns moving unit stacks one by one depending on their speed. You can have up to seven types of creatures serving under a hero, with seven unique creatures available in each of the eight castles. The single-player game spans six campaigns detailing the war to claim the Kingdom of Erathia from the perspective of good, evil and mercenary leaders alike. And if you can finish the campaigns, you still have dozens of single-player maps to try, with the promise of many more to come thanks to the map editor included with the game. Heroes of Might and Magic III doesn't alter the formula much, but represents a refinement and improvement on a par with the finest sequels ever released. The promise of much more of everything--heroes, castles, creatures, artefacts, skills, spells--is gracefully accomplished so as to accentuate the game's complexity, style and strategy without making it feel excessive. The game is played out in real time, with the current time and day-of-the-week (recorded by an internal clock) having a direct impact on gameplay elements, such as what Pokemon you will find in the wild, and when certain events occur and characters appear. While there are simply too many new and improved features in Pokemon Gold (U) to list here, among the highlights are 100 new Pokemon (including two new types), new evolution processes (including breeding) and a more streamlined game interface with better-organized menus and button shortcuts. Although it's easier to progress in Pokemon Gold (U) than the previous games, the sheer amount of fun and game time involved is daunting. Now finally Driver 3 (or DRIV3R as it insists on calling itself) is here, and although it's not the disaster that the last game was it's still a considerable disappointment. As you would expect from developers Reflections, who also did Stuntman and the original Destruction Derby, the car handling and physics are excellent--perhaps some of the best ever seen. However, the artificial intelligence of your opponent drivers is almost laughably poor and the incredibly detailed graphics, which look so good in the screenshots, come at the expensive of some disappointingly short draw distances, with buildings and backgrounds suddenly popping up as if out of nowhere. The game itself is now very much influenced by Grand Theft Auto and you can get out of your car and hijack other vehicles. DRIV3R is still predominantly mission-based, though, and unfortunately the difficulty curve is still as frustratingly uneven as ever with some missions seemingly almost superhumanly hard. If you're a fan of the series then DRIV3R probably won't disappoint too much, but newcomers to the series may find this has rather more problems than you'd expect from such a heavily hyped title.-- David Jenkins

The Dreamcast version runs very quickly and smoothly (supposedly at 60 frames per second) no matter how much action is taking place on screen. New to this version are training levels for up-and-coming Jedi's and a cool mano-a-mano fighting mode (think Street Fighter with lightsabers) that's good for a few laughs. Without the Star Wars name, this game could have been considered rather ordinary. But Jedi Power Battles delivers the fun for all who ever wanted a chance to go toe-to-toe with Darth Maul and all of his friends from the Dark Side.
