Satyrium coriifolium Seeds Common Names: Ewwa-trewwa, Goue-trewwa, Ouma-trewwa, Rooi-trewwa With its brightly coloured yellow or orange-red flowers, Satyrium coriifolium is one of the most attractive terrestrial orchids of the Cape Floristic Region. It is also one of the few species in its genus that is suitable for cultivation. The plants are perennial and have large underground tubers which enable them to survive the dry summer. Stems are mostly 25 to 50 cm tall and are normally very robust. Satyrium coriifolium can readily be distinguished from all others in its genus by its stiff leathery, semi-erect leaves with orange-red bars near the sheathing bases. The flower spike with its bright orange or yellow, comparatively large nodding flowers is very striking. As is typical in the genus Satyrium, the flowers are 'non-resupinate' (meaning that their hood-like lip faces up while the sepals and petals point down). The lip has generally two spurs in Satyrium, which is unique in orchids. The main flowering time of the species is from August through to November, depending on the available moisture in the habitat of the plants. Satyrium coriifolium is found in the western and eastern parts of the Cape Floristic Region from Cape Town to Grahamstown, and northwards as far as Clanwilliam. Its most common habitat is moist, sandy flats below 300 m above sea level (rarely up to 750 m). Colonies are often extensive and may consist of hundreds of plants. Though not essential for flowering, fire appears to have a marked enhancing effect on the flowering as in many other Cape orchids. It is hardly surprising that the bright flowers of this species attract sunbirds. The birds perch on the sturdy stems of the plants and feed on the nectar in their flowers. In the process, the pollinia (orchid pollen is normally united to form clumps termed 'pollinia') are attached to the bird's beaks. Bird species involved are mainly Malachite Sunbirds, but also occasional visits by Orange-breasted Sunbirds and Lesser Double-collared Sunbirds have been reported. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! Dasylirion is a genus of 17 species of grassy looking rosette plants in the family Ruscaceae, all native to northern Mexico, with three species also extending into the south-western United States. They are not grasses but are related to the Agaves. As they grow older, the bases of several species develop into a beautiful trunk. When the plants are mature they send out blooms with hundreds of greenish-white bell-shaped flowers on a tall narrow spike coming from the center of the plant. Unlike most Agaves they do not die after blooming. Most Dasylirion species are reasonably resistant to cold and drought.           Dasylirion wheeleri commonly known as Desert Spoon, Spoon Flower, or Common Sotol is a flowering plant native to arid environments of northern Mexico, in Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern United States, in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and also in New Mexico and Texas. Dasylirion wheeleri is a moderate to slow-growing evergreen shrub with a single unbranched trunk up to 40 cm thick growing to 1.5 m tall, though often recumbent on the ground. The leaf blade is slender, cm long, gray-green, with a toothed margin. The leaves radiate from the center of the plant's apex in all directions (spherical). The flowering stem grows above the foliage, to a height of 5 m tall, and 3 cm in diameter. The stem is topped by a long plume of straw-colored small flowers about 2.5 cm long with six tepals. The color of the flower determinate the gender of the plant, being mostly white colored for males and purple-pink for females plants. The fruit is an oval dry capsule 5-8 mm long, containing a single seed. D. wheeleri is grown as an ornamental plant, valued in xeriscaping. As it does not tolerate extended frosts, in temperate regions it is usually grown under glass. The drink sotol is made from the desert spoon. It was also used by the natives of the region for food and fiber. Its flower stalk can be used as a fire plow. The Tarahumara and Pima Bajo peoples of the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua weave baskets from the leaves after they strip off the spines from the leaf margins. They also employ the expanded leaf bases in making large artificial flowers as holiday decorations.

Parodia is a genus of flowering plants in the cactus family Cactaceae. The genus is named after the Argentine botanist Lorenzo Raimundo Parodi who lived from 1895 to 1966. Flowers in all species arise from fuzzy buds, typically with bristles, at the apex. Flowers are cup-shaped and point straight up. They are easy to grow, have intriguing stems and spines and flower easily with brightly-coloured flowers. This fact in combination with their relatively small size, ensure that nearly all cactus growers will have some representative of this group. While advanced hobbyists may grow many of the various species and subspecies.           The genus has about 50 species, many of which have been transferred from Eriocactus, Notocactus and Wigginsia. They are native to the uplands of Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay and range from small globose plants to 1 meter tall columnar cacti. All are deeply ribbed and spiny, with single flowers at or near the crown. Some species produce offsets at the base and most are free flowering, with stunning blooms throughout the year. These cacti are perfect for rockeries, where they will give your garden splashes of colour or as pot plants on a sunny windowsill. Either way you are assured of many years of joy. Parodia magnifica, formerly known as Notocactus magnificus and commonly known as Balloon Cactus originates from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is a cactus growing to 7–15 cm tall by 45 cm broad, with heavily ribbed, spherical to columnar, spiny and hairy stems, bearing pale yellow flowers in summer. The habitat where this plant comes from can become very cold during the winter nights. Often it will fall to just above freezing without harming the plants as it is also very dry. Therefore, if you live in a frost prone area, keep this plant dry during winter. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

  Echinacea purpurea (Eastern purple coneflower or Purple coneflower) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Echinacea. Its cone-shaped flowering heads are usually, but not always purple. Allium cernuum has an unsheathed slender conical bulb which gradually tapers directly into several keeled grass-like leaves that are 2mm to 4mm wide. Each mature bulb bears a single flowering stem, which terminates in a downward nodding umbel of rose coloured flowers. Flowers are bell-shaped, about 5 mm across, pink or white with yellow pollen and yellow anthers. The flowers mature into spherical crested fruits which later split open to reveal the dark shiny seeds. This plant does not have bulblets in the inflorescence. Allium cernuum is edible and has a strong onion flavor, and has often been used in cooking. This species is also cultivated in many places for its attractive flowers.
