This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 10 working days Critical and creative thinking can make a significant difference to the quality of students' learning. But do we really need to teach children and young people to think, and if so, how should we go about it? The answer to the first part of the question is yes, because the fact of the matter is that although all human beings can think, effective thinking depends on skills and strategies that can be learned. The answer to the second part lies within this book. Schools as thinking communities demystifies thinking and explains how teachers can equip students with the mental tools for success in school and beyond. Schools as thinking communities provides detailed descriptions, illustrated with classroom examples, of the following ways of enhancing thinking: Habits of Mind; CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) and Six Thinking Hats; P4C (Philosophy for Children); CEA (Cognitive Enrichment Advantage); Thinking Maps; IE (Instrumental Enrichment); TASC (Teaching Actively in a Social Context); and Cooperative Learning. One or more of these might be chosen by a school community as a means to nurture thinking across the curriculum in every classroom, thus encouraging individuals to understand, manage and take responsibility for their own thinking processes, and to value the perspectives of others. Contents include the following: How students and teachers develop as thinkers; The characteristics of a thinking classroom; The process of developing a school as a thinking community; Life skills and inclusion in a thinking community; Challenges facing thinking schools. Schools as thinking communities is aimed at teachers at all levels, curriculum designers, education planners, teacher educators and interested parents. Covey's proven 7 Habits to create a leadership program for kids of all ages so they can be more effective, more goal oriented, and more successful. In today's world, we are inundated with information about who to be, what to do, and how to live. But what if there was a way to learn not just what to think about, but how to think? A program that taught how to manage priorities, focus on goals, and be a positive influence? The Leader in Me is that program. In this bestseller, Stephen R. Covey took the 7 Habits that have already changed the lives of millions of readers and showed how even young children can use them as they develop. These habits-be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw-are being adapted by schools around the country in leadership programs, most famously at the A.B Combs Elementary school in Raleigh. Not only does it work, but it works better than anyone could have imaged. This book is full of examples of how the students blossom under the program: the classroom that decided to form a support group for one of their classmates who had behavioural problems; the fourth grader who found a way to overcome his fear of public speaking and wound up taking his class to see him compete in a national story telling competitive, or the seven-year-old who told her father than they needed to go outside and play because they both needed to 'sharpen the saw'. Perfect for individuals and corporations alike, The Leader in Me shows how easy it is to incorporate these skills into daily life. It is atimely answer to many of the challenges facing today's young people, businesses, parents, and educators-one that is perfectly matched tothe growing demands of our certain future. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours One of the key recommendations of the Review Report of the Task Team that reviewed the NCS curriculum was of prioritising the teaching of English First Additional Language (FAL), and its introduction into the curriculum from Grade 1. Research shows that many schools are delaying the introduction of English until Grade 3, which is the year before learners are expected to learn through English as the medium of instruction. Learners' proficiency in English by the end of Grade 3 is not always sufficient for them to make the transition to English as the language of learning and teaching (LOLT) in Grade 4. Whilst policy states that English should be taught alongside mother tongue from Grade 1, in practice this is not happening. This can be attributed to the emphasis on mother tongue instruction but it is also due to widespread confusion about how additive bilingualism (teaching English and the home language in parallel) is implemented in practice. Teaching English as a First Additional Language: Guidelines for the Foundation Phase provides clear pedagogical steps and curriculum guidance to be used in teaching reading and writing in mother tongue and English in parallel. The book will provide clarity around the differences between home language instruction and the teaching of English as FAL. It will also provide clear support in implementing the policy spelt out in the curriculum documentation. Paperback. English. MacMillan. 2011 In good condition. Signed by Jansen. At a time when newspapers are full of the woes of the South African education system and stories of teachers who let the children in their classes down, this book shows that this is not the whole picture; it is a celebration of heroic teachers who have struggled against great odds to give their students a chance of success. Great South African Teachers celebrates the massive contribution of remarkable teachers, both past and present, working in South African schools. The stories, sent in by over 100 South Africans in response to advertisements placed in the Sunday Times, pay tribute to teachers who have changed lives through their passion for their subject, their dedication to the dignity of the teaching profession, and above all their determination to see the children in their classes succeed. The contributions reflect the full range of South African schools -- rich schools, poor schools, white schools under apartheid, black schools under apartheid, urban schools and rural schools, schools today and schools in the past. And the contributors come from varied backgrounds: privileged children exposed to the realities of apartheid South Africa through their teachers, poor children motivated to work to break the bonds of poverty, angry children and shy children, bright children stretched to achieve their full potential and others taught the value of hard work in the pursuit of success. Jonathan Jansen, assisted by Lihlumelo Toyana and Nangamso Koza, introduces the collection of contributions with a thought-provoking commentary on the lessons to be learnt from the tributes. Jansen identifies seven types of inspiring teacher, showing how each type works differently to bring out the best in the children in their charge. Great South African Teachers thanks our inspiring teachers and hopes to motivate the next generation of teachers to dedicate themselves to changing lives, to changing the future. All the royalties from this book go towards pre-service teacher bursaries at universities in South Africa. The first recipient of a bursary funded by the royalties from this book is currently studying for his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of the Free State. He will be the first graduate in his family.
