Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,500 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are still being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation,[4] which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Top-Scoring Allied Fighter Pilot of WW II researched and written by E C R Barker. First South African edition hardcover with dust jacket printed by Ashanti, 1992, as part of their Aviators of Africa series. 228 pages with index. Illustrated. Very good condition. The story of an outstanding fighter pilot and a great leader of men, the unknown ace of the Royal Air Force. Pattle was born in the Cape and raised on a lonely farm in Namibia. He discovered early in his life a keen desire within him to fly. He was rejected by the South African Air Force in 1933, but became more determined than ever to achieve his ambition. Pattle left South Africa to join the Royal Air Force before the war and achieved a success out of all proportion to expectations. He did much to help the hard-pressed troops on the ground. On 20 April 1941, a sick man, he led the remnants of his own and another squadron against an armada of over a hundred German aircraft. In the desperate fighting that followed, he shot down at least two enemy aircraft and then dived to the rescue of one of his pilots. The odds were too heavy and seconds later his aircraft, with Pattle slumped over the controls, crashed in the Bay of Eleusis. Tracked postage is R50.00.

1973. Hard cover with dust cover; 191 pages. Very good condition; neat and clean. The dust cover is worn. Hard cover is excellent.  Under 1kg. Group Captain Douglas Bader became a legend in his own lifetime. Legendary, too, are the Spitfire and the Hurricane, Britain's two most famous fighter aircraft. Bader lost both his legs in a flying accident in 1931, was invalided from the RAF in 1933, and rejoined in 1939. He rapidly became one of Britain's foremost aces and was brought down in France in 1941 and made prisoner of war. His story begins with the birth of these two great aircraft. The Spitfire and the Hurricane flew all over the world in every conceivable flying condition but their greatest contribution was during the Battle of Britain in August 1940 when they outflew the Luftwaffe and changed the course of history. This account is interlaced with Bader's own memoirs nd those of his fellow pilots. He assesses the aircraft themselves, describes his methods of fighting and recounts some memorable experiences.

Air Aces - Christopher Shores - Hardcover Description from the book flap: An Ace is generally accepted as a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft. Since the beginning of air fighting each war and campaign has produced its air aces. This book not only describes the fighting careers of the famous fighter pilots, but places their achievements in the context of the conditions under which they fought. For example, the 352 victories of the Luftwaffe ace Erich Hartmann could only have been gained over the Russian Front in World War II. This exhaustively researched book contains a wealth of information on the air aces of modern warfare. Tables give statistics on all wars since 1914, including lesser known ones like the Russian Civil War and the Indo-Pakistan conflicts. Individual biographies are included on the greatest aces - Lufberry, Gabreski, Galland and Bong to name but a few. More than 250 color and B&W photographs. Condition: Acceptable

At the outset of 1918 Germany faced certain defeat as a result of Allied technical innovation in tanks and aircraft, and the American entry into the war. Victory could only be gained by the immediate application of overwhelming force in new tactical form; the ‘fire-waltz’ artillery barrage and the storm-trooper infantry attack. 1918 examines both the Germans’ tactics and the Allies’ preferred solution to fighting this war, the combination of artillery, tanks, infantry and aircraft, and argues that this reached a level of sophistication in command and control never before achieved. The war of attrition was far from over, but as more Americans arrived in France the ghastly cost became affordable. For the Germans, it became a question of whether they could negotiate an armistice before their armies were utterly destroyed.
