Jane was working in a hospital and Anna was a teacher in a middle school. When the class ended, they said goodbye never expecting to meet again. Feeling an unrest and dissatisfaction with the way her life was going, Jane increased her efforts to find a new direction. The search for meaning led her from church to church and from lecture to lecture. Jane was involved with meditation, prayer and classes in spiritual exercises. She decided to try fasting as a means of strengthening her discipline. At this point, the letters began to arrive. Jane was surprised by their appearance and even more so when she was told that she would work with Anna Brown and that these letters were to be published in book form. The letters themselves caused a great deal of soul searching and self analysis. At first, they were met with skepticism, fear, questions, disbelief. As mentors appeared who encouraged the sharing of the letters, they were able to accept what was happening. By a series of events and circumstances which propelled the book forward the book went into several printings and was used in classes and seminars. Anna passed away in 2005. Jane continues to believe in the love of God and the workings of spirit. Features Summary Jane Palzere and Anna Brown met while attending a class in spiritual development.  A Grammar of the English Language by William Cobbett   A Grammar of the English Language provides a fascinating snapshot of the language and grammar of the early nineteenth century. It was a controversial book, first published in 1818 in New York and in 1819 in London. The author, William Cobbett (1763-1835), was a champion of the poor who had taught himself to read and write. His radicalism brought him into conflict with the authorities on many occasions. He reserved a special kind of venom for politicians, men of letters like Dr. Johnson, the lexicographer, and for Fellows of English Colleges, "who live by the sweat of other people's brows." Here, he criticizes these men for their poor command of English, which was (he says) no better than that of chambermaids, hucksters, and plough-boys. Written in the form of letters and lessons to his fourteen-year-old son, the Grammar is the most colorful and entertaining treatment of the subject ever published. It gives advice on syntax and etymology, including "false grammar taken from Dr. Johnson's writing," "errors and nonsense in a king's speech," and "six lessons, intended to prevent Statesman from using false grammar." This edition includes a new introduction by Lord Hattersley, which gives the book a modern perspective.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Nearly half a century after the defeat of the Third Reich, Nazism remains a subject of extensive historical inquiry, general interest, and, alarmingly, a source of inspiration for resurgent fascism in Europe. Goodrick-Clarke's powerful and timely book traces the intellectual roots of Nazism back to a number of influential occult and millenarian sects in the Habsburg Empire during its waning years. These sects combined notions of popular nationalism with an advocacy of Aryan racism and a proclaimed need for German world-rule. This book provides the first serious account of the way in which Nazism was influenced by powerful millenarian and occult sects that thrived in Germany and Austria almost fifty years before the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. These millenarian sects (principally the Ariosophists) espoused a mixture of popular nationalism, Aryan racism, and occultism to support their advocacy of German world-rule. Over time their ideas and symbols, filtered through nationalist-racist groups associated with the infant Nazi party, came to exert a strong influence on Himmler's SS. The fantasies thus fueled were played out with terrifying consequences in the realities structured into the Third Reich: Auschwitz, Sobibor, and Treblinka, the hellish museums of Nazi apocalypse, had psychic roots reaching back to millenial visions of occult sects. Beyond what the TImes Literary Supplement calls an intriguing study of apocalyptic fantasies, this bizarre and fascinating story contains lessons we cannot afford to ignore. Features Summary This work traces the intellectual roots of Nazism back to a number of influential occult and millenarian sects in the Hapsburg Empire during its waning years... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, the University of Notre Dame Press is proud to publish Nobel Prize-winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's epic work March 1917, Node III, Book 1, of The Red Wheel. The Red Wheel is Solzhenitsyn's magnum opus about the Russian Revolution. Solzhenitsyn tells this story in the form of a meticulously researched historical novel, supplemented by newspaper headlines of the day, fragments of street action, cinematic screenplay, and historical overview. The first two nodes-August 1914 and November 1916-focus on Russia's crises and recovery, on revolutionary terrorism and its suppression, on the missed opportunity of Pyotr Stolypin's reforms, and how the surge of patriotism in August 1914 soured as Russia bled in World War I. March 1917-the third node-tells the story of the Russian Revolution itself, during which not only does the Imperial government melt in the face of the mob, but the leaders of the opposition prove utterly incapable of controlling the course of events. The action of book 1 (of four) of March 1917 is set during March 8-12. The absorbing narrative tells the stories of more than fifty characters during the days when the Russian Empire begins to crumble. Bread riots in the capital, Petrograd, go unchecked at first, and the police are beaten and killed by mobs. Efforts to put down the violence using the army trigger a mutiny in the numerous reserve regiments housed in the city, who kill their officers and rampage. The anti-Tsarist bourgeois opposition, horrified by the violence, scrambles to declare that it is provisionally taking power, while socialists immediately create a Soviet alternative to undermine it. Meanwhile, Emperor Nikolai II is away at military headquarters and his wife Aleksandra is isolated outside Petrograd, caring for their sick children. Suddenly, the viability of the Russian state itself is called into question. The Red Wheel has been compared to Tolstoy's War and Peace, for each work aims to narrate the story of an era in a way that elevates its universal significance. In much the same way as Homer's Iliad became the representative account of the Greek world and therefore the basis for Greek civilization, these historical epics perform a parallel role for our modern world. Features Summary To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, the University of Notre Dame Press is proud to publish Nobel Prize-winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's epic work March 1917...
