A celebration of Arts and Heritage at the Mapungubwe Arts Festival Summer Season   The festive holidays are only a few short weeks away and this year, along with the opportunity to relax, comes the promise of a very exciting week of events to enjoy and share with family and friends. Seeped in cultural heritage, Limpopo will be the place to be for great music and entertainment with the Mapungubwe Arts Festival (Summer Season) bringing audiences a week of exciting stage events, including the Gospel Festival on 6 December and a Jazz and Heritage Festival the following week on the 13 December. The Mapungubwe Festival opens with a carnival parade through Polokwane from Olympic Park to the SABC Park on Friday the 5th December. On the 6th December a gospel festival will be held at Polokwane Cricket Grounds that will see one stage play host to a stellar line-up of South Africa’s gospel artists. With performers like Solly Mahlangu, Worship House, Go Explo and Sipho Makhabane and five groups from local districts bringing their uplifting style to the event, audiences will soar into the holiday season. Following will be a week of free theatre, comedy and stage performances at the Library Gardens Hall that will showcase the talent in the region. The Mapungubwe Arts Festival will close with the Jazz and Heritage Festival taking place at the Polokwane Cricket Grounds, the line-up includes both South African artists and artists from the rest of the continent with Salif Keita, Hugh Masekela, Bhudaza, Jonas Gwangwa, Joe Shirimani, Thomas Chauke, Colbert Mukwevho, Jimmy Dludlu and Candy N’waingwane taking centre stage. Events like the Mapungubwe Arts Festival positively contribute towards improving the economic growth of the region through tourism and job creation. “As we reflect on our hard earned freedom and achievements, we continue to celebrate with our people the 20 years of democracy through song and dance,  fostering unity, nation building and social cohesion. Bringing world music to Jozie, Cape Town’s Desert Rose, leaders in creating and performing sacred music with universal resonance, will – for one night only-create an evening of heavenly rhythms, taking the audience on a mystic musical journey.    Desert Rose, found in , by leading world music composer, Lynne Holmes has toured abroad since to the UK, Europe and Far East to standing ovations. They will make their debut at Wits Theatre on 14 November at 8 pm.   Live African Harp, Djembe, Mbira, African Bow, “Talking Drum” are harnessed to punctuate the unique voices of group members Lynne, Yusuf, Nceba, Sisonke and Michaela. The music of Desert Rose has been described as emotive and mystical. The listener will be drawn into an enchanting journey as the evocative sounds of Ancient Aramaic, Arabic, and Sanskrit, stirs a deep memory of our origins within all of us (See artists’ profiles below.)   They have 13 CDs to their credit and their album, Silence of the Music (September ), received critical acclaim and a 5 star rating from mainstream media for the integration of diverse cultural elements into an original world music sound.   In March they performed to standing ovations in Mount Abu, Ahmedabad, Rajasthan and Delhi, India.
