Just as ancient objects enable us to step back into the world of the people who made them, the stories people told can reveal what they thought about their world. This book combines facts about the Mayas and Incas with photographs of the artefacts they left behind and the stories they shared with each other to present a full picture of life at the time. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days "Uncovers new facts on the outlaw's life and death" He gained renown as the sidekick of Butch Cassidy, but the Sundance Kid--whose real name was Harry Alonzo Longabaugh--led a fuller life than history or Hollywood has allowed. A relative of Longabaugh through marriage, Donna B. Ernst has spent more than a quarter century researching his life. She now brings to print the most thorough account ever of one of the West's most infamous outlaws, tracing his life from his childhood in Pennsylvania to his involvement with the Wild Bunch and, in 1908, to his reputed death by gunshot in Bolivia. Combining genealogical research, access to family records, and explorations in historical archives, Ernst details the Sundance Kid's movements to paint a complete picture of the man. She recounts his homesteading days in Colorado, offers new information on his years as a cowboy in Wyoming and Canada, and cites newly uncovered records that substantiate both his outlaw activities and his attempts at self-reform. While taking readers on the wild chase that became Longabaugh's life, outracing posses and Pinkertons, Ernst corrects inaccuracies in the historical record. She demonstrates that he could not have participated in the Belle Fourche bank heist or the Tipton train robbery and refutes speculations that Butch and Sundance managed to escape their fate in Bolivia. "The Sundance Kid" is enlivened by more than three dozen photographs, including family photos never before seen. Features Summary Uncovers new facts on the outlaw's life and death Author D. B. Condition: Very Good. Winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature Univ. of Nebraska Press, 2002 - Fiction - 214 pp. Set largely in locations near the French Riviera, these eleven short stories depict the harsh realities of life for the less-privileged inhabitants of this very privileged region. Distinguished French writer J. M. G. Le Clezio lends his voice to the dispossessed and explores his familiar themes of alienation, immigration, poverty, violence, indifference, the loss of beauty, and the betrayal of innocence. In one story an adolescent girl encounters the violence of a gang of masked bikers in a hostile and desolate housing project. In others a man stands by helplessly as a place of great beauty and deep childhood memory is slowly consumed and destroyed by a quickly developing city, an illegal immigrant desperate for work finds himself the prisoner of a ring trafficking in human beings, and two girls risk everything by running away from home and their dead-end factory jobs in search of a more meaningful life. At once tragic and evocative, these engrossing and beautifully crafted stories touch upon the loss of human values in a rapidly changing world. Le Clezio is an intensely atmospheric, nearly hallucinatory writer, and in his riveting and eviscerating short stories, dreams turn inexorably into nightmares. -- Booklist Mentioned in The New York Times (Paperback Row) December 28, 2008 About the author   (2002) Winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature, J. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Few side effects of cancer treatment are more feared by patients than nausea and vomiting. Failure to control these symptoms on the first day of chemotherapy increases the risk of them occurring on subsequent days and in subsequent cycles of chemotherapy, and can often result in patients refusing further cancer treatment. Very effective antiemetics are available to prevent this from happening, but do you know how best to use them? Fast Facts: Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting presents the evidence for the clinical agents that can prevent CINV, along with the recommendations for their use in various clinical settings using recently established international guidelines. Correct administration of prophylactic antiemetics in relation to the emetogenicity of the chemotherapy being given not only improves patients' quality of life during treatment but also adherence to subsequent cancer treatments, thus improving overall outcomes. This refreshingly readable handbook is therefore a must-read resource for all health professionals in a position to make this kind of a difference. It is remarkable that a technically-minded Roman Catholic RAF fighter pilot, who studied physics at Scotland's oldest university and became a physical education teacher after the war, should find himself in close contact with a traditional witchcraft coven as early as 1942. This was outrageous and dangerous. The Witchcraft Act was not repealed until almost ten years later and the Old Religion, the pre-Christian religion of North-West Europe, was still banned. Yet, Bill Love (that's his real name) remained firmly attached to the concept of living in harmony with nature, and in 1953, he asked to join such a coven. The High Priestess, who initiated him, had herself been drawn into The Craft during the 1920s and often told stories of older members with memories going back to the end of the 19th century. So, Love's story has ancient roots with passed-on memories from a time when everything connected to this way of life was very much against the law. Love learned to live in harmony with nature from the experience of doing what these elders taught him and, in addition to this, during the 1950s, he met many of the famous people who first brought this innate way of life to the public's attention. This provided him with unique opportunities of following roots into spheres, which many modern practitioners of Wicca can only dream about. Format:Hardback Pages:0

'Matthew Dennison skilfully covers the facts, producing a vivid impression of this strange, shy, awkward figure. The result is a highly readable book' Literary Review. 'A haunting new biography... A compelling account of Grahame's life' Daily Mail. 'A sensitively probing and nuanced portrait that makes sense of the darker character furled in the dreamer' New Statesman. During the week Kenneth Grahame sat behind a mahogany desk as Secretary of the Bank of England; at the weekend he retired to the house in the country he shared with his fanciful wife Elspeth and fragile son Alistair and took lengthy walks along the Thames in Berkshire, 'tempted [by] the treasures of hedge and ditch; the rapt surprise of the first lords-and-ladies, the rustle of a field-mouse, the splash of a frog.' The result of these pastoral wanderings was The Wind in the Willows: an enduring classic of children's literature; a cautionary tale for adult readers; a warning of the fragility of the English countryside; and an expression of fear at threatened social changes that, in the aftermath of the World War I, became reality. Like its remarkable author, it balances maverick tendencies with conservatism. Grahame was an Edwardian pantheist whose work has a timeless appeal, an escapist whose withdrawal from reality took the form of time travel into his own past. Features Summary The story of Kenneth Grahame, author of the children's classic Wind in the Willows, and of the vision of English pastoral that inspired it. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days Midnight feasts in dorms, jolly japes with chums, pranks on mad teachers and no boys whatsoever: THE REAL MALORY TOWERS LIFE from award-winning writer, Julie Welch. `As we spilled from the train we could hear loud revving and smell exhaust fumes, and there in the forecourt was a coach waiting to drop us all off at our various houses. I'd been living for this moment since I'd arrived at the school; since before that... We were all schoolgirls everywhere, past, present and future, real and imagined. We were Darrell and her chums at Malory Towers - except the school in front of me wasn't quite the picture I had imagined. Suddenly I had this out-of-nowhere, waking up from a coma moment, as if I had been whisked away by a tornado or washed up by shipwreck on an unknown shore. Where was I? How did I get here? I was on my own, and now I would have to survive...' Too Marvellous for Words! is the wonderfully evocative and entertaining memoir of life in an all-girls boarding school in Suffolk in the early 1960s. Award-winning writer Julie Welch remembers her time spent at Felixstowe College, a long-lost world of arcane rules and happenings, when the headmistress and the Head of Science raced each other on public roads in their sports cars, and when having meringues for birthday tea instead of plain cake was branded `disgraceful'. As the social morals of post-war Britain collided with those of the decadent 1960s, Julie and her fellow pupils discovered Radio Caroline, fashion and the facts of life at the same time as playing lacrosse derbies, attending classical music concerts and sea-bathing.The years spent at Felixstowe College made a lasting impression on the girls who boarded there. Amidst all the fun, deeply emotional attachments were made, with some girls - whose parents were remote or absent - finding support from their classmates that they didn't get at home.Too Marvellous for Words! is the real Malory Towers life, full of character and charm, and serviing as both a memoir and a fascinating social history of a way of English life lived by 'young ladies' some 50 years ago.
