As author Mark Shaw reveals in this highly original and informative book, the 'upper world' sails perilously close to the underworld. Hitmen For Hire takes the reader on a journey like no other, navigating a world of hammermen (hitmen), informers, rogue policemen, taxi bosses, gang leaders and crooked businessmen. The book examines a system in which contract killings have become the norm, looking at who arranges hits, where to find a hitman, and even what it is like to be a hitman - or woman. Since 1994, South Africa has witnessed some spectacular underworld killings associated with various industries and sectors. Drawing on over a thousand cases, from 2000 to 2016, Shaw reveals how these murders have an outsized impact on the evolution of both legal and illegal economic activity. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Shen Congwen (1902?-1988) is one of modern China's great writers. He is also one of the finest Chinese prose stylists of all time. Literary critics and historians have offered several reasons for why Shen Congwen is a great writer. The foremost explanation is his power as a stylist. He could make the Chinese language beautiful. Some critics have praised Shen Congwen for creating characters with beautiful souls. Readers credit him with having described beautiful and fulfilling styles of life, even in materially primitive surroundings, that conjure up the "health and dignity" prized by the Crescent Moon writers. Other critics value Shen Congwen as a realist writer. He has written many works exposing the abuses of the military in the countryside, and the vanity of the urban bourgeoisie. Most of the short stories in this collection, typeset in bilingual format, reveal the plight and the strength of the common people. They were chosen from the period when Shen had already honed a fine writing style, and they were written about rural folks in his native region, and about people he knew from his daily life. There are contradictions between the "new" and the "old," and also between human values with enough integrity to nurture life, versus corruption that leads to the decline and death of a culture. Stubbornly honest, and imbued with a sensibility that speaks to the author's Jewish heritage, Ami Sands Brodoff writes with authority, passion, and razor-sharp detail about identity and the longing for human connections in the face of loss and exclusion. Her stories evoke the delicate familial weaves of Alice Munro, exposing the raw nerves of shattered lives redeemed by the willingness to forgive. Written close to the senses, "Bloodknots "penetrates to the core. Ami Sands Brodoff is from New York and also lived in Princeton, New Jersey, before relocating with her husband to Montreal, where she writes and teaches creative writing. Serving either in a standalone capacity or as a supplementary reader for undergraduate American foreign policy courses, Hastedt's new volume focuses on the most current problems and how to interpret them. Readings are divided into six parts and each part opens with an introductory essay providing students with a historical framework and "big picture" questions to guide comprehension. Each part incorporates a variety of sources, including not only articles from the most popular journals worldwide, but lesser known government documents and think tank pieces. By exposing students to a unique array of government policies and debates, Readings in American Foreign Policy prompts students to analyze policy making from multiple perspectives and to develop their own strategies toward evaluating policy positions.  Final Deadline - Rex Gibson - David Philip - 2007 - Paperback in nearly new cndition. For much of its 83-year history, the Rand Daily Mail was the most controversial newspaper in South Africa. Fearless and forthright, the newspaper dug where other publications did not, exposing stories – like the Information Scandal – that other newspapers were afraid to print. Under editors like Laurence Gandar, Raymond Louw and Allister Sparks, the Mail blazed a trail for independence and freedom of the press. Closed down by its proprietors in 1985, for reasons that are still controversial, the Rand Daily Mail's culture of professionalism and commitment influenced a generation of journalists. Final deadline is the story of the Rand Daily Mail, seen through the eyes of Rex Gibson, its last editor. Focusing on the difficult final years of the newspaper's history, the book is a tale of corporate manipulation, mismanagement and hypocrisy. In the end, a proud newspaper died and no-one, not least its owners, could quite say why.

Binding: Softcover Pages: 581 Dimensions: 19.6 x 12.7 x 2.8 cm +++ by Ida B. Wells +++ The broadest and most comprehensive collection of writings available by an early civil and women's rights pioneer. Seventy-one years before Rosa Parks's courageous act of resistance, police dragged a young Black journalist named Ida B. Wells off a train for refusing to give up her seat. The experience shaped Wells's career, and - when hate crimes touched her life personally - she mounted what was to become her life's work: an anti-lynching crusade that captured international attention. This volume covers the entire scope of Wells's remarkable career, collecting her early writings, articles exposing the horrors of lynching, essays from her travels abroad, and her later journalism. The Light of Truth is both an invaluable resource for study and a testament to Wells' long career as a civil rights activist.

Thank you, Judge Mostert! - Carmel Rickard - Hard cover in good condition. Anton Mostert was one of South Africa's youngest judges when he was appointed to head a commission of inquiry into exchange control regulations in 1978. His inquiry, seemingly innocuous, unearthed what was at that time the greatest political scandal in the country's history - massive corruption in the department of information. In defiance of warnings by Prime Minister PW Botha not to disclose his findings, Mostert released all the evidence that had been led before him, exposing some of the most powerful men in the country and effectively changing history. The title of this book, Thank You, Judge Mostert! is taken from the inscription which appeared overnight on bumper stickers all over South Africa in the weeks following Judge Anton Mostert's revelations of the Information Scandal. This overt, spontaneous outburst of public appreciation and support requires history to be retold - for this is the story of a principled and courageous judge who not only fiercely fought for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in South Africa, but who also fearlessly confronted the Afrikaner executive at a critical juncture in South Africa's history.

Book in good condition but dustcover has creases and a bit worn around spine.  By Ned Middleton TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 2, 2007 If had to recommend two books to anyone seeking an excellent read which will make them laugh, I would look no further than "The Moon's a Balloon" and "Bring on the Empty Horses!" These are two of the funniest and most satisfying books I have ever read. There were several different aspects to David Niven's life. Having arrived in Hollywood, he was required to learn his trade in "B" movies before being allowed to enter the big time from where he eventually won an Oscar. Unlike some of the greats of Hollywood, he also put his entire acting career on hold whilst he served as a British officer in a fighting unit throughout WW2. "The Moon's a Balloon" recounts the first half of his life's story in which we meet some of the rich and famous stars of that Hollywood of yester-year and learn a little about each of these people and their various relationships. In "Bring on the Empty Horses" Niven confirms his credentials as an ingenious writer as he pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes in this sequel. Not once does he stoop to the level of cheap gossip, not once does attack the person he is describing. Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of humour. Only a writer who had also been a central part of that glorious cast of characters and real-life people could possibly have produced this work. I promise, you will not want either book to end - they really are so enjoyable. There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people you just know they would approve of what he has said. As an actor, David Niven was the good guy, the dashing hero, the sort of character to whom we would all wish to aspire. As an author, he writes about his fellow personalities from the Hollywood of yester-year with whom he worked and came into contact without exposing their shortcomings. Instead, he simply makes us laugh and, as I say, those of whom he writes would, therefore, approve. If you are a fan of the olden days, the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy these two books. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy them even more. Truth is, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying either product. What more can I say except I know you will not be disappointed.
