Johannesburg (Gauteng)
Subtitle: A Practical Guide To The Coastal Winds of Atlantic Europe and the Mediterranean Author: Alan Watts Publisher: Adlard Coles Nautical () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good. Some wear to cover edges. Binding: Softcover Pages: 126 Dimensions: 23.9 x 15.6 x 0.9 cm +++ by Alan Watts +++ Seabreezes are the lifeblood of cruising and racing sailors - but they are a fickle resource and it's vital to be able to predict and read the situations when they will blow strongly, change direction (annoyingly) or vanish altogether. This is a highly practical handbook from Alan Watts, the renowned meteorology author, on a subject only lightly touched upon in other books. Here he helps seafarers of all types (dinghy sailors, yacht racers, big boat cruisers, etc) to capitalize on when the seabreeze will occur and from what direction. He explains the relevance of: time of day, sea/land temperature, local topography (bays, cliffs, headlands, etc), pressure systems and their effect on the arrival and duration of seabreezes. Illustrated with photographs, wind charts and checklists, this is the book that will help sailors to use the wind efficiently, whether to cruise or race successfully.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

Free Postage Within SA for Orders Over R900! Hardcover. . First edition. Publisher: Penguin / Allen Lane. 317 pages. Has the most successful species in British political history finally become extinct? The Conservative party dominated British politics for 120 years from Disraeli's victory in , culminating in an unprecedented eighteen-year spell in government after . And yet at the very end of the century the Tories imploded so disastrously as to suggest the party might be doomed to follow the Liberals into oblivion. Geoffrey Wheatcroft has observed this extraordinary drama at close hand, interviewing all the key players on (and, more often, off) the record: from spirited exchanges with Margaret Thatcher to unprintable asides from Alan Clark. In this provocative and often acerbically funny book he first examines how the Tories came to enjoy their unlikely triumph: what was meant to be the century of the common man', with the unstoppable ascent of Labour, turned out to be the era of the Conservative, as the Tories reinvented themselves over and over again, not least entirely changing the party's class character. Very good condition. History / Europe / Great Britain / Political Science / Politics   Additional photos on request.   See You In November The story of Alan `Taffy' Brice - An SAS assassin- By Peter Stiff - Galago - 2002 - Paperback still in good, tight condition. This is the extraordinary true story of how a British SAS-trained explosives expert plotted to kill Robert Mugabe in London and was stopped only hours before carrying out his death mission. The assassin, known only by his code name "Taffy" tells first hand of his SAS training and special operations in Malaya, Borneo, Cambodia, Kenya and Europe and his six years as head of the Rhodesian Central Intelligence Operation's covert team in Zambia, where, in 1975, they did assassinate the ZANU chairman Herbert Chitepo. In September 1979, he travelled to London with orders to kill Mugabe at the Lancaster House constitutional talks, by detonating a bomb in the foyer of the Royal Gardens Hotel, Kensington. The operation, codenamed November, was at trigger stage when it was called off. Unbeknown to him, British security had been tipped off, but the informer thought he was a Rhodesian SAS operator and not an ex-member of British SAS, so he was never caught.

1997. Hard  cover with dust cover, 691 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. "[An] awesomely scholarly study.... The importance of this book is not only in its intrinsic interest, or its usefulness as a superb resource, but its demonstration that [Britain's] story cannot be told without a thorough knowledge of what happened at sea."¿Alan Judd,  Sunday Times  [London] Throughout the chronicle of Britain's history, one factor above all others has determined the fate of kings, the security of trade, and the integrity of the realm. Without its navy, Britain would have been a weakling among the nations of Europe, could never have built or maintained the empire, and in all likelihood would have been overrun by the armies of Napoleon and Hitler. Now, for the first time in nearly a century, a prominent naval historian has undertaken a comprehensive account of the history and traditions of this most essential institution. N. A. M. Rodger has produced a superb work, combining scholarship with narrative, that demonstrates how the political and social history of Britain has been inextricably intertwined with the strength-or weakness-of her seapower. From the early military campaigns against the Vikings to the defeat of the great Spanish Armada in the reign of Elizabeth I, this volume touches on some of the most colorful characters in British history. It also provides fascinating details on naval construction, logistics, health, diet, and weaponry. "A splendid book. It combines impressively detailed research with breadth of perception....[Rodger] has prepared an admirable historical record that will be read and reread in the years ahead."¿ Times  [London] 24 pages of illustrations
