(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) This text is the premier introductory environmental economics text for non-majors. Policy-oriented coverage of environmental economics for majors and non-majors alike. Environmental Economics and Policy 6/e is a companion text to the larger Environmental and Natural Resource Economics 8/e. This smaller, paper-bound policy text is intended for a broader audience that includes political science, environmental studies, and agricultural programs. Environmental Economics and Policy provides a broad but nuanced introduction to the field of environmental economics. This text begins with an introduction to core concepts and theory, followed by a series of policy chapters that are self-contained, allowing for a great degree of flexibility in course design. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In January 2000, two wildfires torched more than 8 000 hectares of the Cape Peninsula, swept through the Table Mountain National Park, and burned houses and property. There were more than 120 fires in the region on that one 'fire-storm Sunday'. The challenges faced in the Cape are shared by major cities and nature reserves in similar Mediterranean-type ecosystems in the USA, Australia and Mediterranean Europe. Wildfire has destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares and killed people in Greece, Australia and the United States. It has become a global, and a local, research and management challenge. In Burning Table Mountain the author tackles the environmental and social challenges of fire management on the wildland-urban interface of South Africa's Cape Peninsula, where a UNESCO World Heritage Site for Nature protects the unique fynbos vegetation and incorporates the iconic Table Mountain, and abuts the suburbs, townships and informal settlements of South Africa's parliamentary capital. He combines narrative, the history of ecological science in the region and the role of fire in fynbos ecology, to provide the first integrated history of wildfire and its management on the Cape Peninsula. He reflects on the need to use a holistic approach to understanding the range and conjunctions of causes that conspire to cause large fires and increase fire incidence over time. This book will demonstrate the contribution environmental history can make, through combining scientific and social approaches, to understanding past environments and managing the environment today. It is a seminal contribution to a neglected area of South African history, but also offers an important contribution to global histories of fire. Features Summary In January 2000, two wildfires torched more than 8 000 ha of the Cape Peninsula, swept through the Table Mountain National Park, and burned houses and property... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The 1994 publication of the The Bell Curve and its controversial thesis catapulted the topic of genetic racial differences in IQ to the forefront of renewed and heated debate. Now, in A Terrible Thing to Waste, award-winning science writer Harriet A. Washington adds her incisive analysis to the fray. She takes apart the spurious notion of intelligence as an inherited trait, pointing instead to environmental racism -- a confluence of institutional factors that relegate marginalized communities to living and working near sites of toxic waste, pollution, and urban decay -- as the prime cause of the reported black-white IQ gap. Investigating heavy metals, neurotoxins, deficient prenatal care, bad nutrition, and pathogens as the main factors influencing intelligence, Washington explains why certain communities are so disproportionally affected and what can be done to remedy the problem. Featuring extensive scientific research and Washington's sharp, lively reporting, A Terrible Thing to Waste is sure to outrage, transform the conversation and inspire debate. Features Summary A powerful indictment of the notion of hereditary intelligence, A Terrible Thing to Waste shows how environmental racism drives the black-white IQ gap and explains what can be done to remedy its toxic effects on marginalized communities. Eily Gledhill (1914-2007) described a number of new species and worked on a revision of the genus Albuca. She also published ‘The genus Dioscorea in the Cape Province west of East London' in 1967. Many of her numerous publications were illustrated by herself with accurate black- and-white drawings. Furthermore, her book published in 1969 and with a second edition in 1981, The Eastern Cape veld flowers, in which she describes 554 species from 125 families, each illustrated by her fine line drawings, is still of great value to students of botany and the public at large  In the preface she writes: ‘If this guide assists owners of land and visitors to know more about the plants of the eastern Cape, it will have achieved its object, for any one who becomes interested in this unique flora cannot fail to realise why it needs to be protected’. She coined the term bonte veld which has become recognized as a veld type and is widely used. Eily was honoured in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign head of the order, by her promotion to Dame of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. 'The City of Cape Town is heading for disaster and is already in deep crisis if one cares to look close enough. The recent proliferation of public construction, public squares and public housing along the N2 towards the airport is little more than a mirage compared with the direction of more underlying trends. Cape Town's grim future is born out of the confluence of the globalised economic and ecological collapse that is fast becoming the defining feature of the twenty-first century. It is manifested most starkly in the dire situation that faces the majority of the city's residents, who are excluded from the formal economy and must rely on substandard public services and their own makeshift shelters. The scenario is serious enough to draw everyone's attention but should be set against the broader issues of long-term economic resilience and environmental sustainability to achieve a low-carbon society - so we have our work cut out for us. The purpose of this volume is to demystify these challenges and present readers with a creative portfolio of thinking, practice and strong vision to show that we can find alternatives - and, moreover, that these alternatives are already emerging in (marginal) sections of the state, civil society and the business sectors.'--Introd. The book, with a short introductory text by award-winning environmental journalist John Yeld, explains the global biological significance of an area that lies at the heart of the Cape Floristic Region - a World Heritage Site - and that harbours more endemic floral species per square kilometre than any other in the world. In a highly accessible short essay, Yeld traces the struggle to have the park formally established and looks at the challenges it will face in the future. Still, when a massive explosion took the top off the mountain, no one was prepared. Fifty-seven people died and the lives of many others were changed forever. Steve Olson interweaves history, science and vivid personal stories to portray the disaster as a multi-faceted turning point. Powerful economic, political and historical forces influenced who died when the volcano erupted. The eruption of Mount St. Helens transformed volcanic science, the study of environmental resilience and our perceptions of how to survive on an increasingly dangerous planet.
