It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Think more deeply and work more independently at A level History through a carefully thought-out enquiry approach from SHP.Enquiring History: It makes you think! The OFSTED report on school history suggests that the current generation of A Level students have been poorly served by exam-based textbooks which spoon-feed students while failing to enthuse them or develop deeper understanding of History. The Schools History Project has risen to this challenge with a new series for the next generation. Enquiring History is SHP's fresh approach to Advanced Level History that aims: - To motivate and engage readers - To help readers think and gain independence as learners- To encourage enquiry, and deeper understanding of periods and the people of the past- To engage with current scholarship - To prepare A Level students for university.Key features of each Student book:- Clear compelling narrative - books are designed to be read cover to cover- Structured enquiries - that explore the core content and issues of each period- 'Insights' (Feature panels between enquiries) provide context, overview, and extension - Full colour illustrations throughout. The Russian RevolutionThis title examines Russian history from 1894-1924 - the stories, settings, characters and issues that make this such an extraordinarily important and popular topic. The enquiries have an obvious focus on causes but also on interpretations. Each new generation of historians has interpreted these events through their own lenses - their own time, place and political standpoint - making this topic one of the most powerful for understanding how history is written and how interpretations are formed.Web-based support includes- lesson planning tools and guidance for teachers available from the SHP website http://www.schoolshistoryproject.org.uk/Publishing/BooksSHP/Enquiring/RusRev/EHSRusRev.html- eBooks for whole class teaching or individual student reading available from eBook retailersView sample chapter here http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/SiteImages/51/51470c4a-7b8a-423e-85a3-ccd12c7c27ce.pdf Features Summary Think more deeply and work more independently at A level History through a carefully thought-out enquiry approach from SHP. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) "The Ways of the Dead is a great read. If this is Tucker's first novel, I can't wait for what's coming next". (Michael Connelly). True detective meets house of cards in the electrifying first novel of a new crime series from a veteran Washington, D.C., reporter. The body of the teenage daughter of a powerful Federal judge is discovered in a dumpster in a bad neighbourhood of Washington, DC. It is murder, and the local police immediately arrest the three nearest black kids, bad boys from a notorious gang. Sully Carter, a veteran war correspondent with emotional scars far worse than the ones on his body, suspects that there's more to the case than the police would have the public know. With the nation clamouring for a conviction, and the bereaved judge due for a court nomination, Sully pursues his own line of enquiry, in spite of some very dangerous people telling him to shut it down. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days How was the complex history of Britain's languages understood by twelfth-century authors? This book argues that the social, political and linguistic upheavals that occurred in the wake of the Norman Conquest intensified later interest in the historicity of languages. An atmosphere of enquiry fostered vernacular literature's prestige and led to a newfound sense of how ancient languages could be used to convey historical claims. The vernacular hence became an important site for the construction and memorialisation of dynastic, institutional and ethnic identities. This study demonstrates the breadth of interest in the linguistic past across different social groups and the striking variety of genre used to depict it, including romance, legal translation, history, poetry and hagiography. Through a series of detailed case studies, Sara Harris shows how specific works represent key aspects of the period's imaginative engagement with English, Brittonic, Latin and French language development. Features Summary This book shows how depictions of etymology were used by twelfth-century poets, translators, bureaucrats and historians to portray Britain's past. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days How do we understand academic freedom today? Does it still have relevance in the face of the managerial and ideological pressures which are reconfiguring higher education institutions? And what about the humanities? In an increasingly imarket-driven world, what do the humanities have to offer society? These two sets of questions provide the guiding threads of related enquiries that make up this hard-hitting and controversial study. Academic Freedom in a Democratic South Africa argues that the principle of supporting and extending open intellectual enquiry is essential to realizing realising the full public value of higher education, and that in this task, the humanities and the forms of argument and analysis that they embody have a crucial role to play. The book examines the troubled history of academic freedom in South Africa starting with key debates raised by the 1987 O'Brien Affair through to post-apartheid government policy where it figures as an inconvenient ideal, that is paid lip service to but is neglected in practice; questions received ideas of institutional culture and managerial authority; and argues for a better understanding of the critical thinking arising from advanced forms of literacy made available by the humanities. Discussion of the place of the humanities in furthering democracy is deepened and extended in a series of interviews with three key figures from the critical humanities: Terry Eagleton talks about the deforming effects of managerial policies in British universities, Edward W. Said argues for the democratising potential of the humanities, and Jakes Gerwel discusses the importance of the humanities in both the anti-apartheid struggle, and for contemporary South Africa. The volume as a whole ends with a consideration of the most recent challenges facing academic freedom and the humanities. Features Summary How do we understand academic freedom today? Does it still have relevance in the face of the managerial and ideological pressures which are reconfiguring higher education institutions?
