It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days Through an incisive analysis of the emerging debates surrounding urbanization in the Romantic period, together with close readings of poets including William Blake, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Stephen Tedeschi explores the notion that the Romantic poets criticized the historical form that the process of urbanization had taken, rather than urbanization itself. The works of the Romantic poets are popularly considered in a rural context and often understood as hostile to urbanization - one of the most profound social transformations of the era. By focusing on the urban aspects of such writing Tedeschi re-orientates the relationship between urbanization and English Romantic poetry to deliver a study that discovers how the Romantic poets examined not only the influence of urbanization on poetry but also how poetry might help to reshape the form that urbanization could take. Features Summary This book re-orientates the relationship between urbanization and English Romantic poetry by focusing on urban aspects of Romantic poems. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Andrzej Franaszek's award-winning biography of Czeslaw Milosz--the great Polish poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1980--offers a rich portrait of the writer and his troubled century, providing context for a larger appreciation of his work. This English-language edition, translated by Aleksandra Parker and Michael Parker, contains a new introduction by the translators, along with historical explanations, maps, and a chronology.Franaszek recounts the poet's personal odyssey through the events that convulsed twentieth-century Europe: World War I, the Bolshevik revolution, the Nazi invasion and occupation of Poland, and the Soviet Union's postwar dominance of Eastern Europe. He follows the footsteps of a perpetual outsider who spent much of his unsettled life in Lithuania, Poland, and France, where he sought political asylum. From 1960 to 1999, Milosz lived in the United States before returning to Poland, where he died in 2004.Franaszek traces Milosz's changing, constantly questioning, often skeptical attitude toward organized religion. In the long term, he concluded that faith performed a positive role, not least as an antidote to the amoral, soulless materialism that afflicts contemporary civilization. Despite years of hardship, alienation, and neglect, Milosz retained a belief in the transformative power of poetry, particularly its capacity to serve as a source of moral resistance and a reservoir of collective hope. Seamus Heaney once said that Milosz's poetry is irradiated by wisdom. Milosz reveals how that wisdom was tempered by experience even as the poet retained a childlike wonder in a misbegotten world. Features Summary Andrzej Franaszek's award-winning biography of Czeslaw Milosz winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature recounts the poet's odyssey through WWI, the Bolshevik revolution... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Paul Valery (1871-1945) was a poet and essayist, and along with Verlaine and Mallarme is regarded as one of the most important Symbolist writers, and an influence on poets from Eliot to Ashbery. He had a quiet life by many standards, but in one respect it was exemplary, even legendary; he made an early reputation in little magazines, decided to stop writing verse when still only 20, kept his silence for 20 years, then began again; and his first book of verse, published when he was 45, was his masterpiece La Jeune Parque.'A poem should not mean, but be,' said Archibald MacLeish. La Jeune Parque ('the goddess of Fate as a young woman') certainly exists: she's beautiful and makes great gestures. And as for what she means, there's a substantial amount of argument about that, so La Jeune Parque is a poem by either definition. It's a classic, by general agreement, written to the full 17th-century recipe for alexandrine couplets, and it's modern, with every word pulling its weight in more than one direction. Alistair Elliot's translation with notes is aimed at making this rewarding but difficult long poem accessible enough for bafflement to turn into admiration. He attempts to clarify its small puzzles and also trace the overall narrative line of Paul Valery's poem: it does have a story (what should a young woman do?) and does struggle towards a resolution. He also provides an introduction which deals with the interesting circumstances of the poem's four-year composition (1913-17), which resulted in Valery's instantly becoming a famous poet at the age of 45, after having written no poetry for 20 years. Beautiful Kondwani Fidel has once again composed a masterpiece of stories and memories that forms lessons to all young Suns growing up in the neighborhood. This piece, this lesson, is ever so necessary in an era where, we, who come from urban communities, are still fighting structural racism, police brutality, economic genocide while simultaneously fighting the ways in which we self-destruct, destroy one another, and create chaos in our communities. It is a critique of the system of our oppression and a critique of the dysfunctions in our own families, relationships, and communities. It is brilliant that a young mind such as Fidels has been blessed with the conscious and creative spirit that allows him to compose a lesson from a perspective and in a way that no other could. Raw Wounds is sung in pitches and frequencies that invokes the emotion. It is a bittersweet song. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Kahlil Gibran (1183 ¿ 1931), poet, philosopher and artist, was born in Mount Lebanon, a land that has produced many prophets and philosophers. His fame and influence have spread far beyond the Near East, where millions of Arabic-speaking people consider him the genius of his age. In America, where he lived for the last twenty years of his life, he began to write in English, and his books of poetry, illustrated with mystical drawings, are now known all over the world. The Prophet is Gibran's masterpiece. First published sixty years ago, it has been translated into many languages and has sold millions of copies, becoming one of the most beloved classics of our time. Gibran's drawings have been compared to those of William Blake, and his poetry echoes the majestic rhythms of Ecclesiastes. The Prophet is timeless in its insight into the human condition; and in its calm philosophy and spontaneous joy can be found the expression of the deepest impulses of man¿s heart and mind.
