Hardback. English. NK Publishing. 1999. In good condition. As we enter the new millennium we have the urge to return to a simpler lifestyle - family values, friendship, wholesome food and a strong bond with nature - characteristics of an earthy, rural existence. This title captures the new mood in country decorating with original and inspiring ideas. Traditionally, country style meant cosy, cluttered rooms with an abundance of frilled and piped soft furnishings, but the trend has shifted towards clean lines, simple styling and honest materials. The first part of this title explains the main characteristics of the new approach to country style - nature, simplicity and lifestyle. The second part features eight key contemporary country looks - rustic, naturals, romantic, monotone, modern rose, nautical, fresh floral and creative colour - and shows how to translate these into a distinctive look in the most important living areas of the home - the sittingroom, diningroom, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Practical ideas and tricks of the trade are shared throughout, showing you how to create a beautiful, peaceful environment on any budget. Previous owner's name inside.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days As the BBC's North America Editor, Jon Sopel has had a pretty busy time of it lately. In the 18 months it's taken for a reality star to go from laughingstock to leader of the free world, Jon has travelled the length and breadth of the United States, experiencing it from a perspective that most of us could only dream of: he has flown aboard Air Force One, interviewed President Obama and has even been described as `a beauty' by none other than Donald Trump. Through music, film, literature, TV and even through the food we eat and the clothes that we wear we all have a highly developed sense of what America is and through our shared, tangled history we claim a special relationship. But America today feels about as alien a country as you could imagine. It is fearful, angry and impatient for change. Reflecting on his journey across the continent to cover the most turbulent race in recent history, Jon Sopel lifts a lid on the seething resentments, profound anxieties and sheer rage that found its embodiment in a brash, unpredictable and seemingly unstoppable figure. In this fascinating, insightful portrait of American life and politics, Jon sets out to answer our questions about a country that once stood for the grandest of dreams but which is now mired in a storm of political extremism, racial division and increasingly perverse beliefs. Features Summary Presents a portrait of American life and politics as seen through British eyes. After the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, American flags appeared everywhere. Is patriotism a good response at a time of national crisis? What does it mean for us to think of ourselves as a nation first? With our connections to the world growing stronger and more vital than ever, Martha C. Nussbaum argues that we should distrust conventional patriotism as parochial and instead see ourselves first of all as 'citizens of the world.' Sixteen prominent writers and thinkers respond, including Benjamin R. Barber, Sissela Bok, Nathan Glazer, Robert Pinsky, Elaine Scarry, Amartya Sen, and Michael Walzer. Paperback. English. Jonathan Ball Publishers. 2003. Fair/Good. Previous owner's name inside. It is the dramatic story of how a handful of rookie politicians came 'out of the bush' ' to use Mandela's own phrase ' to take over the running of a complex and deeply troubled country that they thought was richly endowed but in fact was almost bankrupt; of how they struggled to come to terms with an often hostile bureaucracy; and how above all they found themselves struggling not only with the complexities of their own society but also with the bewildering and often destabilizing forces of the new globalized economy. It is the story of singular triumphs and some distressing failures. South Africa still faces many problems, but it is also one of the most vibrant and exciting places on earth ' and, as Sparks suggests, a microcosm of the world. For this is a country not only of white and black, but one where the impoverished meet the rich everyday, where Christians and Jews and Muslims and Hindus, sophisticated urbanites and tribal traditionalists, Zulus and Xhosas, English and Afrikaners, must all surmount their historical conflicts and find a common national identity. Mandela's dream was of a nonracial democracy, and this book is a realistic assessment of the status of that dream as the new South Africa nears the end of its first decade. But Sparks also suggests that it is much more than that. South Africa also represents a unique negotiated resolution to a historical conflict that had its roots in rival claims to sovereignty over the same piece of national territory. Whose country is it? Both white Afrikaners and black Africans laid claim to South African sovereignty ' one as a God-ordained right, the other by indigenous birthright. This is a conflict that repeats itself in many of the world's most intractable trouble spots ' between Israelis and Palestinians, Protestants and Catholics in Northern Island, Greeks and Turks in Cyprus. In that respect particularly, Sparks suggests that the great South African experiment is of abiding global importance.

In 1934, his father John, then curator of the Library of Congress's Archive of American Folk Song, took an eighteen-year-old Alan and a 300-pound aluminum disk recorder into the rice fields of Jennings, along the waterways of New Iberia, and behind the gates of Angola State Penitentiary to collect vestiges of African American and Acadian musical tradition. These recordings now serve as the foundational document of indigenous Louisiana music. Although widely recognized by scholars as a key artifact in the understanding of American vernacular music, most of the recordings by John and Alan Lomax during their expedition across the central-southern fringe of Louisiana were never transcribed or translated, much less studied in depth. This volume presents, for the first time, a comprehensive examination of the 1934 corpus and unveils a multifaceted story of traditional song in one of the country's most culturally dynamic regions. Through his textual and comparative study of the songs contained in the Lomax collection, Joshua Clegg Caffery provides a musical history of Louisiana that extends beyond Cajun music and zydeco to the rural blues, Irish and English folk songs, play-party songs, slave spirituals, and traditional French folk songs that thrived at the time of these recordings. Intimate in its presentation of Louisiana folklife and broad in its historical scope, Traditional Music in Coastal Louisiana honors the legacy of John and Alan Lomax by retrieving these musical relics from obscurity and ensuring their understanding and appreciation for generations to come. Includes: ? Complete transcriptions of the 1934 Lomax field recordings in southwestern Louisiana ? Side-by-side translations from French to English ? Photographs from the 1934 field trip and biographical details about the performers Features Summary Alan Lomax's prolific sixty-four-year career as a folklorist and musicologist began with a trip across the South and into the heart of Louisiana's Cajun country during the height of the Great Depression... Beautiful Kondwani Fidel has once again composed a masterpiece of stories and memories that forms lessons to all young Suns growing up in the neighborhood. This piece, this lesson, is ever so necessary in an era where, we, who come from urban communities, are still fighting structural racism, police brutality, economic genocide while simultaneously fighting the ways in which we self-destruct, destroy one another, and create chaos in our communities. It is a critique of the system of our oppression and a critique of the dysfunctions in our own families, relationships, and communities. It is brilliant that a young mind such as Fidels has been blessed with the conscious and creative spirit that allows him to compose a lesson from a perspective and in a way that no other could. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days 'An intelligent and stylish study...packed with new information and insight...cements Adam Crafton's reputation as one of the brightest young journalistic talents' Ian Herbert, author of Bob Paisley Quiet Genius As Pep Guardiola shatters records and confounds the norms of English football and players such as David De Gea and David Silva light up the national game, Spanish stars are transforming the way English football is conceived. But the origins of this particular Spanish invasion date back to 1937, when the Spanish Civil War led to a stream of refugees fleeing their country for the safe haven of England. Their families reveal how the refugees learned the game here, before returning to Spain where one would score Real Madrid's first goal in the Bernabeu stadium and another would be the first man to conceive of Barcelona's vaunted La Masia academy that would later launch stars such as Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi Hernandez. In recent years the reputation of Spain's footballers has grown, and every club craves a sprinkling of tiki-taka magic. Through dozens of exclusive interviews, Adam Crafton has spoken to many of the key Spanish figures who have come to England and he creates a compelling portrait of their impact on the English game. We discover how and why it is that some players, such as Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Juan Mata, have had great success here, while others have toiled so painfully. But this is not just a footballing story, pure and simple. Crafton provides the historical and social context that helps to explain how the relationship between the two nations is constantly changing, yet always close. For anyone who enjoyed Jonathan Wilson's Inverting the Pyramid or Sid Lowe's Fear and Loathing in La Liga, this book is a revealing and brilliant insight into this most benign of Spanish invasions. Due to Book size Postage and Packaging is R40  "A powerful, deeply affecting career summation, and another great book from an indisputable master practitioner of the art" David Goldblatt: Photographs Hasselblad Award 2006 Published by Hatje Cantz. Introduction by Gunilla Knape. Text by Michael Godby., 2007 Book Description: Sweden / Germany: Hasselblad / Hatje Cantz, 2007 Hardcover. First edition, 2006. 84 pages with 4 gatefolds; 45 full-page, color photographic plates; 12 x 11 inches. Text in English. When David Goldblatt received the world-renowned Hasselblad Award in 2006, he had been making photographs of the South African landscape and culture for more than 50 years. Born in 1930 in a gold-mining town near Johannesburg, his parents were Jewish refugees from Lithuania, and they raised him with an emphasis on tolerance and antiracism. In 1975, at the height of apartheid, Goldblatt explored white nationalist culture in Some Afrikaners Photographed, and in the 80s he observed workers on the Kwandebele-Pretoria bus, many of whom traveled eight hours every day to work and back. His late-90s solo show at New York's Museum of Modern Art focused on architectural work, and showed off Goldblatt's uncanny ability to discover a society through its buildings and landscapes. His photographs of architectural structures revealed the ways that ideology had defined his home country's landscape. Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography In 2006 David Goldblatt was presented with this prestigious award in Sweden, the 26th recipient since its inception in 1980. From the Hasselblad press release: David Goldblats work is a life long observation of the social and political developments within South African society. He has been concerned to explore the relationship between individual subjects and the structures within which they live. His interest in the violent history of his country, and his awareness of the symbolic significance of architecture, form an extraordinary statement both personal and socio-political. Photography, in the words of David Goldblatt, reveals something of the subtlety and ambiguity of our shifting and frequently contradictory perceptions of reality. The reason why the jury has chosen Golblatt for the Hasselblad award is because Goldblatts photographs are acute in historical and political perception. They provide a sense of the texture of daily life, and an important piece of missing information regarding life under apartheid in South Africa.   Book condition as new, clean, no sign of wear, pristine collectable   Due to Book size Postage and Packaging is R40
