This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Since the 1890s thousands of Arab seamen from Yemen have travelled to the Northern port town of South Shields near Newcastle, the first permanently settled Middle-Eastern community in Britain. Last of the Dictionary Men, based on an exhibition that opened in 2008 at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, traces the history of the British-Yemeni community through the stories of the fourteen surviving seamen from this first generation, known as the "Dictionary Men".The nickname comes from the fact that Yemeni Arabic remains the closest to Classical Arabic, giving rise to the country's nickname "Dictionary Land". A history spanning a hundred years saw generations of seamen from Yemen settling along the River Tyne in England's North Eastern region of South Shields, in search of new opportunities abroad. Far from the Arabian Peninsula, these seamen not only made South Shields their home, but some 800 of them fought and died alongside the British in the Second World War. To add to its intriguing history, South Shields is also home to Al Azhar, Britain's first mosque, witness to boxing legend Muhammad Ali's wedding in 1977. Features Summary A history of the British-Yemeni community through the eyes of the last surviving first- generation sailors. Each sailor sat for a portrait by Egyptian photographer Youssef Nabil... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days "I have decided to prepare for, and if necessary to carry out, an invasion against England."--Adolph Hitler, July 16, 1940 Operation Sealion was the codename for the Nazi invasion of Britain that Hitler ordered his generals to plan after France fell in June 1940. Although the plan ultimately never came to fruition, a few sets of the Germans' detailed strategy documents are housed in the rare book rooms of libraries across Europe. But now the Bodleian Library has made documents from their set available for all to peruse in this unprecedented collection of the invasion planning materials. The planned operation would have involved landing 160,000 German soldiers along a forty-mile stretch of coast in southeast England. Packets of reconnaissance materials were put together for the invading forces, and the most intriguing parts are now reproduced here. Each soldier was to be given maps and geographical descriptions of the British Isles that broke down the country by regions, aerial photographs pinpointing strategic targets, an extensive listing of British roads and rivers, strategic plans for launching attacks on each region, an English dictionary and phrase book, and even a brief description of Britain's social composition. Augmenting the fascinating documents is an informative introduction that sets the materials in their historical and political context. A must-have for every military history buff, "German Invasion Plans for the British Isles, 1940" is a remarkable revelation of the inner workings of Hitler's most famous unrealized military campaign. Features Summary In June 1940, Hitler ordered his generals to organize the invasion of Britain under a plan codenamed Operation Sealion, drawing up a complex set of documents... (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) Johannesburg's evolution provides important insights into the history and transformation of South Africa as a whole. This work should therefore be of interest to readers who wish to understand the events that shaped South Africa in the successive eras of gold discovery, British colonization, Nationalist Party apartheid legislation, and transformation after 1994. The authors include information on the original indigenous inhabitants who occupied the area of the future city long before the first white settlers, and whose descendants, through their intensive labour on the gold mines, played a decisive role in the development of Johannesburg. The more than 600 alphabetical entries not only cover the economic and political history of the city but also give an account of its cultural aspects, including architecture, art, music and theatre. The authors have extended the scope of the book by including certain adjoining urban areas such as Sandton, Randburg, Soweto and Edenvale, some of which have only recently been brought into the orbit of Greater Johannesburg.;The detailed chronology which precedes the alphabetical entries highlights the important events which helped to determine the city's destiny.
