Existing histories tend to treat cinema as an economic rather than an aesthetic phenomenon; earlier surveys that do engage with individual films do not include films of recent decades. This book treats representative films from the beginnings of German film to the present. Providing historical context through an introduction and interchapters preceding the treatments of each era's films, the volume is suitable for semester- or year-long survey courses and for anyone with an interest in German cinema.BR> The films: The Student of Prague - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - The Last Laugh - Metropolis - The Blue Angel - M - Triumph of the Will - The Great Love - The Murderers Are among Us - Sun Seekers - Trace of Stones - The Legend of Paul and Paula - Solo Sunny - The Bridge - Young Torless - Aguirre, The Wrath of God - Germany in Autumn - The Marriage of Maria Braun - The Tin Drum - Marianne and Juliane - Wings of Desire - Maybe, Maybe Not - Rossini - Run Lola Run - Good Bye Lenin! - Head On - The Lives of Others Stephen Brockmann is Professor of German at Carnegie Mellon University and President of the German Studies Association. In fair condition. In the free-fall environment of the Smoke Ring (an immense gaseous envelope and neutron star circling a habitable cluster of plants, trees and animals), descendants of the starship Discipline's crew no longer remember their Earth roots or the existence of Sharls Davis Kendy, the computer AI controlling the ship - until Kendy initiated contact once more, 500 years after the crew whom the half-mad AI calls mutineers were abandoned on this strange world (see The Integral Trees).Fourteen years later only Jeffer, the Citizens Tree Scientist, knew that Kendy was watching and advising. When Citizens Tree rescues a family of loggers, they learn of the Admiralty, a military organization in a town unknown to Citizens Tree. Jeffer is among those who want to visit the town and the Admiralty, which may have maintained intact Discipline's original computer library. The events following the visit to the town and the subsequent flight from the Admiralty form part of this exciting tale of adventure, danger and courage.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of The Who from their golden era with the ultimate line-up of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon. Indeed, all the concert photos within come from the band's last two years of gigs with the inimitable Keith Moon and are from the archive of former Record Mirror photographer Steve Emberton. With the exception of a handful they have all been scanned from the original negatives, specifically for this book and have never been published before. Having spent most of '74 away from the stage whilst working on the film Tommy, the band returned to touring in October '75 in support of their then latest album, The Who By Numbers that also spawned the hit single 'Squeeze Box'. The eleven UK concerts culminated with three shows at Wembley's Empire Pool and Steve Emberton was there at two of them. The following year the band continued to tour in promotion of The Who By Numbers, albeit mainly in America. However they performed three UK concerts in early summer - all outdoor events at football grounds. The first in London at Charlton Athletic's The Valley, went down in Who history as it resulted in the band being declared the loudest in the world as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. This was followed by a gig at Celtic Park in Glasgow. Steve Emberton was there again for the third and final gig at The Vetch Field in Swansea. It would prove to be the last paid gig the band performed to a UK audience with Keith Moon in the band and Steve captured it. In addition to this Steve also took photos of both Keith Moon and John Entwistle outside of the gig environment and this collection includes candid photos of the Who's rhythm section in more relaxed settings with the ones of Entwistle taken in West London in November '76 and with his father in August '77 at Ramport Studios. The Keith Moon shots were taken in October or November '77 at Chrysalis Records. Completing the book is a foreword by Tony Klinger, author of the Who tome, Twilight Of The Gods and co-producer of The Kids Are Alright film. Features Summary Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of the original Who by Record Mirror's Steve Emberton.
