This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days During the 18th Century, the Electorate of Saxony was a rich state of the Holy Roman Empire. Northern Saxony was one of most fertile parts of Germany, though fertility diminishes toward Ore Mountains of the south where Saxony long had important mineral production. The House of Wettin ruled Saxony since 1429. Between 1697 and 1763, the Electors of Saxony were also elected Kings of Poland. The Elector Frederick August I (12 May 1670-1 February 1733), also known as "Sun King" of Saxony, was elected King of Poland with the support of Austria and the help of Russia when the former King Stanislaw I Leszczynski, supported by France, was forced to flee after the Swedish defeat of Poltava in 1709. The Elector married Maria Josepha, sister of the Emperor Charles VI of Austria. The Emperor, having no male heirs was obsessed with the partition of the vast Imperial territories after his death. He issued on 19 April, 1713, an edict to ensure that the Habsburg hereditary possession could be inherited by a daughter, the Pragmatic Sanction. Frederick August I recognised the edict. When Frederick August died in 1733, Leszczynski, the archenemy of the House of Wettin, with the support of France and Spain, contested the election of Frederick August II of Saxony as King of Poland. This led to the War of the Polish Succession. The new Elector inherited an efficient and modern army. Forged by Field Marshall von Flemming on new lines between 1717 and 1727, this re-born army could match the other European countries. Frederick August II, aided by the Russian army and supported by Austria, managed to defeat Leszczynski's supporters, and after a short but bloody conflict he was elected King of Poland. Next the Saxon army fought as an auxiliary in the Austrian service in Hungary against the Turks, and on the Rhine against the French. In 1741, Saxony reneged on the Pragmatic Sanction and sided with France, Bavaria, and Prussia when Frederick II of Prussia invaded Silesia after the death of Emperor Charles VI. The Saxons fought against Maria Theresia's Austrian army during the First Silesian War, occupied Prague and campaigned in both Bohemia and Moravia. Thereafter, Prussia signed a unilateral peace with Austria. Saxony signed a separate cease-fire and France was left alone. Years of armed peace followed until the Second Silesian War. During the war, Saxony sided with Austria. The Prussian army crossed the border and invaded Saxony. The Saxon army was badly defeated at Kesseldorf on 15 December, 1745. The Second Silesian War was over. Peace once again reigned in Europe until 1756 when France changed alliances. Frederick II of Prussia launched another preventive war and invaded Saxony. Caught totally unprepared, the Saxon army retired to Pirna where it was surrounded by an overwhelming Prussian force. With no food, the Saxon army was forced to lay down its arms and surrender unconditionally. The prisoners were incorporated into the Prussian army. A massive desertion followed and soon a Saxon Corps was formed in Bohemia. The Saxon Auxiliary Corps of 10,000 men was transferred to French service and fought until the end of the Seven Years War. It was repatriated in 1763. Volume I of this work deals with the Saxon army of the years 1730-1763. The campaigns, the commanders, the guards mounted units, and the line cavalry units of this overshadowed army are treated. Lavishly illustrated by Franco Saudelli, the volume shows the elegance of the Saxon army and particularly an army misjudged by Frederick II of Prussia as "weak". Prep meets Girls in White Dresses in Genevieve Sly Crane's deliciously addictive, voyeuristic exploration of female friendship and coming of age that will appeal to anyone who has ever been curious about what happens in a sorority house. Twinsets and pearls, secrets and kinship, rituals that hold sisters together in a sacred bond of everlasting trust. Certain chaste images spring to mind when one thinks of sororities. But make no mistake: these women are not braiding each other's hair and having pillow fights--not by a long shot. What Genevieve Sly Crane has conjured in these pages is a blunt, in your face look behind the closed doors of a house full of contemporary women--and there are no holds barred. These women have issues: self-inflicted, family inflicted, sister-to-sister inflicted--and it is all on the page. At the center of this swirl is Margot: the sister who died in the house, and each chapter is told from the points of view of the women who orbit her death and have their own reactions to it. With a keen sense of character and elegant, observant prose, Crane details the undercurrents of tension in a world where perfection comes at a cost and the best things in life are painful--if not impossible--to acquire: Beauty. A mother's love. And friendship... or at least the appearance of it. Woven throughout are glimmers of the classical myths that undercut the lives of women in Greek life. After all, the Greek goddesses did cause their fair share of destruction. Features Summary Synopsis coming soon....... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days From award-winning ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman, and written using exclusive interviews and information comes the definitive account of the dramatic story that gripped the world: the miracle rescue of twelve boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave miles underground for nearly three weeks--a pulse-pounding page-turner by a reporter who was there every step of their journey out. After a practice in June 2018, a Thai soccer coach took a dozen of his young players to explore a famous but flood-prone cave. It was one of the boys' birthday, but neither he nor the dozen resurfaced. Worried parents and rescuers flocked to the mouth of a cave that seemed to have swallowed the boys without a trace. Ranging in age from eleven to sixteen, the boys were all members of the Wild Boars soccer team. When water unexpectedly inundated the cave, blocking their escape, they retreated deeper inside, taking shelter in a side cavern. While the world feared them dead, the thirteen young souls survived by licking the condensation off the cave's walls, meditating, and huddling together for warmth. In this thrilling account, ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman recounts this amazing story in depth and from every angle, exploring their time in the cave, the failed plans and human mistakes that nearly doomed them, and the daring mission that ultimately saved them. Gutman introduces the elite team of volunteer divers who risked death to execute a plan so risky that its American planners admitted, "for us, success would have meant getting just one boy out alive." He takes you inside the meetings where life and death decisions were grimly made and describes how these heroes pulled off an improbable rescue under immense pressure, with the boys' desperate parents and the entire world watching. One of the largest rescues in history was in doubt until the very last moment. Matt Gutman covered the story intensively, went deep inside the caves himself, and interviewed dozens of rescuers, experts and eye-witnessed around the world. The result is this pulse-pounding page-turner that vividly recreates this extraordinary event in all its intensity--and documents the ingenuity and sacrifice it took to succeed. In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry, 1996-2013 In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry 1996-2013 presents the works of 32 poets and includes some translations from Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, and Xitsonga. This collection follows on from Denis Hirson's 1997 anthology The Lava of This Land: South African Poetry 1960-1996. Today, South African poetry is charged with restlessness, bursting with diversity. Gone is the intense inward focus required to deal with a situation of systematic oppression, the enclosing effort of concentration on a single predicament. While politics and identity continue to be central themes, South African poetry since the late 1990s reveals a richer investigation of ancestors and history, alongside more experimentation with language and translation, and enduring concern with the touchstones of love, loss, memory, and acts of witnessing. The poets include: Jim Pascual Agustin * Gabeba Baderoon * Robert Berold * Vonani Bila * Jeremy Cronin * Ingrid de Kok * Isobel Dixon * Finuala Dowling * Khadija Tracey Heeger * Denis Hirson * Ronelda Kamfer * Keorapetse Kgositsile * Katharine Kilalea * Rustum Kozain * Antjie Krog * David wa Maahlamela * Bongekile Joyce Mbanjwa * Joan Metelerkamp * Kobus Moolman * Isabella Motadinyane * Petra Muller * Gert Vlok Nel * Mxolisi Nyezwa * Karen Press * Mongane Wally Serote * Ari Sitas * Kelwyn Sole * Rosamund Stanford * Toni Stuart * Nathan Trantraal * Marlene van Niekerk * Bulelani Zantsi. [Subject: African Studies, Poetry] About the editor  Denis Hirson was editor of a previous anthology of poetry: The Lava of this Land, South African Poetry 1960-1996 (Northwestern University Press and David Philip, 1997), was co-editor [with Martin Trump] of The Heinemann Book of South African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1994), and the author of an historical survey of South African literature, Worlds in One Country (Jacana 2011). He has also edited two anthologies of South African poetry in French translation, and has done much to promote South African literature in Europe. Denis Hirson is the author of four books of memory: The House Next Door to Africa, I Remember King Kong (the Boxer), We Walk Straight So You Better Get Out the Way, White Scars, a poetry collection, Gardening in the Dark, and a novel, The Dancing and the Death in Lemon Street.
