Book 2.5kg please choose option 2 or 3  World War 11 Day by Day  - Donald Sommerville See photos for book condition.   As New  1989 320 pages Big Luxury edition Bison Group Many of the day to day facts of a truly global war When the conflict is global, somewhere around the world and at all hours, shots are being fired and people are dying. Therefore, for any day there will be some action or event to report. Although there is an entry for nearly every day, there are some days for which there is none. For example, there is no report for August 2, 1942. Not a criticism, just a note. Strictly speaking, the book begins in June 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of St Germain that formally ended World War I. This is fitting, for it was not a peace, just an interlude. The major events that laid the foundation for the official start of the war on September 1, 1939 are briefly mentioned. The ebb and flow of Allied fortunes during the war are closely followed by reading these entries. Since all are short, there is very little that could be interpreted as political commentary, it is a book of concise facts. If you are interested in the day by day actions of World War II, this is a book that you can read for enlightenment. It is an excellent book to be placed on a coffee table, to be picked up and read a couple of pages at a time. Profusely illustrated with pictures from all sides in the conflict, it is concise yet complete. Of course there are omissions, with nearly every nation involved, it is impossible to include all significant events in a book this size.     I have many similar books available    I have many books on sale, please check my listings. I am happy to combine and save postage for you.

HarperCollins Publishers. Hardback. Book Condition: Very good, 2009, 1st edition. 388 pp. Alamein, Iain Gale, The superb novelist of men at war moves into the twentieth century and World War Two, telling the story of the eleven days in the sands of North Africa that would change history forever. There are some battles that change the course of history: Alamein is one of those. In October 1942, Britain and its allies were in real difficulties: Germany and its Axis partners seemed to be triumphant everywhere - in Europe, in Russia, in the Atlantic and were now poised to take the Suez Canal. It was in North Africa that the stand was made, that the tide of World War Two began to turn. It was a battle of strong characters: the famous battle commander Rommel and the relatively untested new British commander, Montgomery, leading men who fought through an extraordinary eleven day battle, in an unforgiving terrain, amid the swirling sandstorms and the desert winds. Iain Gale, author of the outstanding historical novel Four Days in June on the battle of Waterloo, tells the dramatic story through seven characters, almost all based on real people. Drawn from both sides of the conflict, they include a major from a Scottish brigade, the young lieutenant in the thick of the tank battle, the Australian sergeant with the infantry, the tank commander of the Panzer Division and the charismatic Italian commander of a parachute battalion. Through them and others we see the flow of battle, the strategies, the individual actions and skirmishes, the fear, the determination, the extraordinary courage on both sides.

1960 hardcover with dust jacket and 256 pages in good secondhand condition. Browning to all pages edges. 6 June, 1944. 156,000 troops from 12 different countries, 11,000 aircraft, 7,000 naval vessels, 24 hours. D-Day - the beginning of the Allied invasion of Hitler's formidable 'Fortress Europe' - was the largest amphibious invasion in history. There has never been a battle like it, before or since. But beyond the statistics and over sixty years on, what is it about the events of D-Day that remain so compelling? The courage of the men who fought and died on the beaches of France? The sheer boldness of the invasion plan? Or the fact that this, Rommel's 'longest day', heralded the beginning of the end of World War II. One of the defining battles of the war, D-Day is scored into the imagination as the moment when the darkness of the Third Reich began to be swept away. This is the story of D-Day, told through the voices of over 1,000 survivors - from high-ranking Allied and German officers, to the paratroopers who landed in Normandy before dawn, the infantry who struggled ashore and the German troops who defended the coast.Cornelius Ryan captures the horror and the glory of D-Day, relating in emotive and compelling detail the years of inspired tactical planning that led up to the invasion, its epic implementation and every stroke of luck and individual act of heroism that would later define the battle. In the words of its author, The Longest Day is a story not of war, but of the courage of man.
