What is it? Peat Moss is considered by some as the best organic growing medium for containerized plants known to mankind. Peat Moss is sterile, which is great when used in seedling mixes. However microbial life does thrive in it and it has the capacity to adsorb nutrients for future release. Despite its very light and open structure, it is water retentive but does not impede drainage in the root zone. How to use? Peat Moss may be used for indoor, balcony and container plants such as bonsai trees. Patented wetting agents within the Peat Moss, ensures quick absorption and distribution of irrigation water throughout the container. If using Peat Moss as an ingredient of a bonsai growing medium, ensure it is combined in a ratio of around 30/70 of Peat Moss to Leca for most trees. Juncus has a cosmopolitan distribution, with species found throughout the world, with the exception of Antarctica. They typically grow in cold of wet habitats, and in the tropics, are most common in montane environments. Juncus effusus 'Spiralis', the corkscrew rush, sometimes referred to as Juncus spiralis, is a perennial plant with green spiraling stems. It is a cultivar of the soft rush, Juncus effusus. Plants grow to 45 cm high. The young, leafless stems are light green and coiled, the coils becoming looser with age. Plants grow in both a horizontal and vertical direction. By winter, stems become a yellow-brown or tan colour. Flowers are both rare and insignificant in terms of the plants appearance. They are yellow-green or light brown. The origin of the cultivar is uncertain, though Japan is thought to be a possibility. The cultivar has also been referred to as Juncus effusus f. spiralis and Scirpus lacustris 'Spiralis'. This cultivar is often confused with Juncus balticus 'Spiralis'. The cultivar is often grown as a curiosity plant due to its unusual form. It prefers a situation in sun or partial shade and acidic soilire permanent water, ideally between 5 and 10 cm deep, or continual irrigation. In open soil containers are sometimes used to contain its spread. This cultivar is relatively free of pests or diseases, but is susceptible to drought stress. Plants are maintained by the removal of old stems in spring. It is suited to container cultivation and can be used as an indoor plant. It can be grown on the edge of water bodies to help control erosion. Propagation is through seed or by division of plants during the active growing phase of the plant. Stems are used in floral arrangements along with cut flowers. It can self-seed and become troublesome in some areas.

It is an excellent container plant and can also be decorated and used as an indoor Christmas tree. This tall, evergreen tree can reach a height of 45 m in nature but luckily never reaching that great height in garden cultivation. The bark is interesting, being smooth and ridged on younger stems and peeling off in flakes on the older trees. The leaves are arranged spirally, with parallel veins and smooth margins. The leaf tip is sharply pointed. Male and female cones occur on different trees. The large, yellow, fleshy fruits take a year to ripen and hang from the branches in clusters. The ripe fruit is edible and very resinous. Remove the fleshy part of the fruit (cone) to expose the seed. This process is very important as the fleshy part contains an inhibitor, which seems to suppress germination. The fresh seed can be sown directly into black nursery bags or into deep seed trays using a mixture of well-rotted compost and washed sand (1:1). The seed must be pushed and bedded into the mixture and covered with a light layer of soil. The mixture must stay moist at all times. Some of the seed may take up to six months to germinate, so be patient. Seedlings can be pricked out at a height of mm and planted into bags or pots. Care must be taken not to damage the taproot as this may slow the initial growth rate of the plant.
